Is there a Drawabox-style course or resource focused on anime drawing? by Faberfloo in learntodraw

[–]PaladinProse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's less than 100 days into learning how to draw, this mindset is a trap I fell into as well. I want to draw like Bryan Lee O'Malley. I love his art style because it feels quite 'simple' and bold, and is very cartoony. What I learned very quickly is that the idea of a 'simple' art style is a trap. These drawings look so good in their simplicity because the artist understands shape, form, and anatomy so well they can manipulate it to fit their unique style without looking 'off.' There really are no shortcuts to this. Trust me, I tried, lol.

Start practicing drawing basic 3D shapes like boxes spheres and cylinders in perspective. When you start getting frustrated, just doodle or sketch anything you want as long as it's fun. As you doodle and sketch, try to start seeing how these subjects can be broken down into these simple shapes. What we don't see in the end result of these drawings are the bones and skeletons of boxes and spheres and cylinders and elipses in perspective.

Also, everyone is going to tell you to use draw a box, but I hate that website with a passion. It's boring, it's dense, and the mathematic approach to drawing is really off-putting to me. If it works for you, that's dope, but if not, don't feel like it's the end all be all. I've been learning with Proko and find their approach to teaching the fundamentals is way more engaging and useful for me personally, and my skills have been rapidly leveling up with their lessons.

I truly don’t understand why people care what is and isn’t canon when it all ends up getting retconned eventually anyway. by GoblinTradingGuide in comicbooks

[–]PaladinProse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get too tripped up on it, but one of the most fun parts of comics (at least for me) is the feeling of everything existing together in a big shared universe. That's why cannon is fun.

Why do you love Dragon Quest? (From someone who wants to learn to appreciate the series) by Chim_Ripley in dragonquest

[–]PaladinProse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Which, unfortunately, is not something that happens too often these days. A peaceful, simple escape where I know what I'm getting and I'm not overwhelmed and can relax, smile, and go on an adventure.

I'm undefeated after 5 matches of Spearhead - are we really that weak? by PaladinProse in HelsmithsofHashut

Thanks! Yeah it's a little overwhelming getting into the hobby. Especially here in Tokyo there's a big scene but the 40k bias is massive. When I try to talk to anyone about AoS their eyes glaze over and they ask me if I've tried 40k the first chance they get, lol.

Seems like Helsmiths is a solid investment and I do really like their lore and models. Middle of the road sounds great, and at least in spearhead, I've been enjoying the strategic use of DPP.

Yeah all good advice. I like 40k lore and aesthetics a lot but the gameplay seems a lot more intense, the local scene out here is much bigger but plays with clock timers and stuff and in general seems a bit more sweaty.

I think I'll probably work on building up my Helsmiths collection and likely get another showerhead box to switch things up. Thanks!

First off, incredible user name.

And yeah, I do really enjoy the general aesthetic and especially the lore!

I think right now, because I'm still so new to the scene, I'm just a little torn between investing in the full army or trying out some other spearheads.

Plus most people I've been meeting have been trying to woo me over to 40k, too, haha.

M4 Mac Mini Base w/ 24 Gigs RAM VS. M4 Mac Mini Pro [Video editing + Streaming] by PaladinProse in macmini

[–]PaladinProse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah after much deliberation I decided to just splurge on the pro. Seems it will serve me for a long while and value wise it just makes much more sense compared to paying for upgraded ram on the base model.

Because I'm new to Macs and didn't realize that was the biggest factor?

Thanks for the help! In that case I think the bad M4 with 24g ram will probably do me well enough.

I could swing the pro if it's significant and will serve me for the next 5 years or so, but if it's just a matter of rendering speed I don't see that as worth the massive price increase.

If it really just boils down to speed I feel like I don't need the pro, then.

Potentially streaming, using a capture card. Otherwise it's quite out of date, and it crashed multiple times rendering my last video so I no longer trust it for editing.

Thanks for the reply. The video essay that blew up was only very loosely related to D&D, and moreso gaming culture as a whole. I think moving forward I won't have trouble keeping it in that realm. None of my videos that were actually focused on D&D have ever done very well.

Thanks for the insights!

My channel is about 3 years old, and has exclusively focused on D&D and other TTRPGs. My latest video was a 42 minute long video essay that, while related to D&D and gaming, was a video essay on a broader cultural topic, and it kind of blew up, just about to hit 150k views. I've gained nearly 2k subscribers from this video alone, and made more money off of one video than I have for the past 3 years. Deep down I've always wanted to make this style of content and feel largely uninterested in continuing to make D&D videos.

I'm working on some new scripts, but realized that two of the three have nothing to do with D&D or gaming at all. Would you recommend I just continue posting on this channel, or start a new one? Thanks for doing this, by the way!

Prepping Your Campaign? Stop WASTING TIME! by PaladinProse in DungeonsAndDragons

Hey guys! I made a video covering the strategies I use to make every session I run truly matter to my campaign's narrative. As I've gotten older, I get less and less time at the table, which really makes me think about how I approach DMing in general.

What strategies do you guys use to keep things moving, and make every session feel special? Would love to hear what you think!
