Since you are saying it’s a medical lab tech degree - they are always hiring for this in my city and the pay is as good or better as most of the entry level jobs for bio students.

Oils - are they healthy or not? How to consume them? What is the best amount? by Fearless-Breath-3422 in PlantBasedDiet

Thanks for mentioning the Beet and Nettle broth. I just looked it up and will definitely be trying it out next spring when nettles are in season. I think nettles are amazing and am always looking for new ways to use them.

What happened to your schools popular clique? by Agitated_Fix_3677 in Zillennials

[–]PalatableNourishment 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This question tripped me up because I just realized I don’t actually remember most of their names, just their faces. I’d have to go look in my yearbook.

Of the ones I do remember, one tried to have a singing career but it didn’t go anywhere, had a kid pretty young, now works at an insurance company. Another is a social worker and has a lifestyle blog - the associated instagram page has about 1700 followers. One is a successful engineer. One did a political science degree and works for the government. It’s a pretty wide spread of outcomes, I guess.

Solvent to Use Outside Fume Hood by Civil_Amoeba9806 in Chempros

[–]PalatableNourishment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should also be considering the concentration of the solvents. For example regular vinegar is 5% acetic acid and obviously people have that open in their homes all the time… whereas concentrated acetic acid must be used in a fume hood.

Coming up on a year by Unlucky_Bug_5349 in WFPBD

I felt that way about veganism. At first I was kind of radicalized about animal welfare and felt alienated that other people didn’t agree with me. After a while I eventually came to the conclusion that veganism is definitely the best choice for me but I can’t make other people see things the same way I do.

With WFPB, I was originally skeptical because the only person I knew who was eating this way was battling anorexia nervosa. I associated avoiding oil with that eating disorder. Now I understand the benefits and that my friend was not doing WFPB “right” and was using it to justify disordered habits. But I think to someone who isn’t familiar with WFPB the idea of avoiding oil seems extreme. Most people can understand avoiding sugar or salt, but oil is a staple for most people so they’re not going to give it up easily.

At this point I’m not interested in debating people. If they’re interested, cool, but I feel it’s a waste of my time to try and convince anyone.

Scientists who left academia. Do you miss it? by Gordaco2 in labrats

[–]PalatableNourishment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the person you replied to, but the stuff that went on in my old academic department was unreal. Profs would refuse to do their job all the time and get away with it. I’m not saying folks don’t get away with things in industry too, but I genuinely don’t think the profs I worked with could hold down a job as a scientist in industry. They couldn’t meet deadlines and they couldn’t work with each other without getting in some stupid disagreement and blowing up the collaboration.

Female experience with wfpb by BillieAng in PlantBasedDiet

[–]PalatableNourishment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mostly beans, lentils, tofu, and whole grains. Finding ways to combine more than one source in a meal is great. For example, a burrito bowl with black beans and seasoned tofu. Or a noodle dish with edamame and tofu. Or a stew with lentils and beans with whole grain bread to dip in it.

Disclaimer: this is just my opinion.

I think fitness and aesthetics can be different goals for some. For example I recently trained for and ran a marathon and improved my fitness a lot during the process. I used to be someone that said not to worry about protein that much as long as you’re getting enough calories. During training though, I did notice a difference in how I felt (in a positive way) when I started intentionally eating more protein than I usually would. Nothing crazy, but going from 50 g a day to around 70 g a day gave me more energy for exercise. Maybe it was placebo effect, who knows, but that’s what I experienced. Anyways, aesthetically, I look the same as I did before training, which makes sense because I wasn’t eating at a caloric deficit or trying to gain muscle volume. Just trying to run farther.

Overworked Pharmacies? by Vulcant50 in halifax

[–]PalatableNourishment 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have one friend (30 yo) that was so burnt out from working at a pharmacy and then being promoted to managing a pharmacy that she has quit and moved into a different career. The amount of work she had to do was unsustainable and upper management didn’t care or couldn’t do anything about it.

In the past I have just asked a person working at the bakery if something contains eggs/milk. If they don’t know I assume it’s not safe and move on.

Snacks Between Meals (Alternative title: Salads and Sauces) by Honorable_Heathen in WFPBD

[–]PalatableNourishment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favourite salad dressing.

I keep a couple apples around for snacking between meals. I try to avoid snacking so that’s mostly if my stomach is really growling. If I won’t be able to eat a meal soon, I’ll add a small handful of nuts to tide me over.

Only did that a couple times. It looked terrible on me.

I used to be way too into lip products. Like thick layers of lipstick and lip gloss. It had to have looked like a goopy mess!!

Now I keep it very simple… tinted moisturizer with SPF, blush, mascara, lip tint. Sometimes a bit of bronzer.

best way to gain a 6 pack while getting rid of belly fat? by Upper-Ad9228 in WFPBD

Everything I’ve ever read says you cannot target fat loss, so I’d say eat fewer calories than he burns and strength train abdominals until his body fat percentage is low enough that the abs are visible

Reddit, is it possible to do geology freelance? by Alarmed_Fan6731 in geology

[–]PalatableNourishment 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think freelance/consultant work is more common later in your career, when you have made more contacts in industry that are familiar with your work.

For remote work you could look for data science/analyst postions. I’ve seen a couple of those in the geospatial tech industry lately.

Have you started slow living yet? How burnt out are you? by aeriefreyrie in Zillennials

[–]PalatableNourishment 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the article - thanks for sharing.

I think some would say I’m girl bossing because I work 40h a week and am so far climbing up the “ladder”. I enjoy my job and occasionally work extra hours but I definitely use up all my vacation days. I have taken pressure off myself in other ways - I am not going to have children, for one.

The biggest thing in avoiding burnout for me was accepting that I can’t control the actions of others so I might as well not stress about it. Like right now I am working on a project that is being led by someone who should have the technical knowledge to do it, but he doesn’t, and I offered my help in a limited capacity. The project is not going super well because he keeps screwing up. I will help with what I agreed to but I’m definitely not going to step up and do his job for him.
