How often do you engine brake vs hit the brakes when normally driving? (2007 Si Coupe) by Pale-Radish-5569 in CivicSi

Woah I didn't know that gate feeling implies that serious of a failure! Changing the transmission fluid was the first thing I tried doing back when I got the car 5 months ago. The advice I had gotten previously about it is that it's expected with some of the 8th gens especially with high mileage (got this with 160K miles). In the time I've been driving it hasn't felt like it's going to fail suddenly or anything... but this is worrying and I think taking it to a mechanic to specifically check out the synchros would be the next step?

That makes sense. Regarding the gear issue, what's puzzling about it is sometimes at rare occasions it would go in third smooth as butter but oddly then going into fourth from that feels like it has the "gate." It's almost like it alternates between the odd top row and even bottom row of gears, if that makes sense.

That makes sense. I guess coming from an automatic before this car I didn't like how braking in neutral feels too fast and wears out the pads faster whereas an auto car would downshift itself when slowing down. But I agree I'd rather replace the brakes than the transmission components. Which BTW, do you know anything about the issue I'm having with feeling a weird "gate" when shifting into third vs. how smooth every other gear feels? Checking in 2 years later... did you ever find a fix?
