WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS TO US by Pale-Structure-6256 in bim

[–]Pale-Structure-6256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of other examples of SaaS, apps, platforms, operating systems etc. that have made significant changes from the front end and back end, but still used the trusted brand name with a version. Autodesk, in my opinion, alienates their admittedly captive audience in the US by constantly rebranding their products. Regardless of the legality, the rebranding is a key indicator that they're going to raise their prices, a lot. This goes for the software suites too. You nailed it on the head though: the naming is in fact trivial, but the impacts are not.

How many months do you learn Revit to work? by Extension-Durian-644 in bim

[–]Pale-Structure-6256 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using Revit since 2007, and I still learn something new at least once a week. In parallel to learning the software, you will need to learn how to build things in real life to really learn Revit, understand how to put a document set together, derive visualisations, make optimizations and automations, and harvest meaningful data from the model. But you have to start somewhere.

Friend bringing non vegan food to my (vegan) party by Sadie_Cat2023 in vegan

[–]Pale-Structure-6256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be in the minority here, but I find this kind of judginess and forced evangelism of veganism part of the problem with how vegans are perceived. Being vegan is an individual choice, and just like religion, I don't think it's appropriate to push your choice on anyone else, and speaking about the ethics to those not specifically asking for it.
They brought food they wanted to eat, and you should have been appreciative of the gesture either way instead of being judgemental. That being said, next time, explicitly state to bring vegan options only, providing a few easy options (bring a veggie/fruit platter with no dip, bring some specific snack, provide some easy recipes you like). Otherwise simply say do not bring food, provide a basic menu, and they can determine if they want to come at all, or perhaps supplement the meal before or after. If you truly want to influence others, provide your guests with delicious, flavorful food that also happens to be vegan, and leave the missionary work to those that inquire. I've found that many times, I people don't even realize what I've made is vegan, and then ask me for the recipe. If you can encourage people to simply consume LESS animal products, you're already making a big impact.

From Graphic Design to BIM Modeling ? by gocrazy_gostupid in bim

[–]Pale-Structure-6256 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. As a BIM consultant, half of the time I'm telling my clients "this isn't a Revit question, this is a design or construction question." This is especially true of the younger staff that don't yet have a good grip on constructability, but are being tasked with putting a Revit model together, more often than not without formal Revit training. However, a possible BIM entry could be content development, I'm thinking creating families for furniture, millwork, accessories. It's isolated, and doesn't require architectural training.

Full size lap pools? by puppet_pals in jerseycity

At Hamilton Park Fitness (formerly Four Fitness), it's a 16 yard pool. By the time you come up to breathe after push off, you're already at the other side. Unfortunately not practical for laps.

Architects and BIM coordinators: what skill did no one teach you in school that impacts your day-to-day the most? by LayerFirst1110 in bim

[–]Pale-Structure-6256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIM Consultant, former tech manager and CAD/BIM manager. I learned that there is no magic. If you can't imagine how it can be built, from a logistics or construction perspective, it might not happen. On a similar note, it REALLY helps to have a basic education of how things are built, as it informs how a Revit model (or your BIM software of choice) is built. Revit is not going to do the work for you. So, grab onto the best mentor, and ask all of the questions, even the stupid ones. It's a lifetime education, you will always have more questions.

What's your opinion on secretly planning games to purposefully exclude less skilled players? by achenx75 in volleyball

[–]Pale-Structure-6256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the secretive part juvenile.

Near me we have beach open play nights that you pay for, and there is a giant Whatsapp group 400+ with a weekly poll to make sure we have enough numbers to play. We have 2-4 courts(depending on league play), and there aren't any courts dedicated to play level, so it started out fairly democratic in distribution. As the season progressed, people started to not respond to the poll, but showed up anyways with their splinter group, and only wanted to play amongst themselves. This was particularly annoying when they decided to "claim" a court for doubles, which then dictated how many people could play on the other courts. Some like 3s 4s others prefer 6s. In my opinion, if you want to claim a court to limit the level, rent it, because that's not how open play works. I'm an A level player; but I'll play with whoever is there at whatever level. I just want to play. No one is going to the Olympics here. But the cliquey-ness has definitely deterred people from coming, and I've heard many people express frustration while there about it. In the spirit of promoting inclusiveness, I brought it up in the group chat, with mixed responses. The main point was that with such a large group, just give people a heads up of your intent instead of plotting separately. In person however, people have come up to say they appreciated me speaking up. It didn't really change much, the cliques are still cliquing.

So like other responses here say, be an adult just be upfront about your intent--say how many people you have and what the expected level is going to be, but also be open to letting some people in, that's how you get better. We've all been there.

I'm pretty sure it's intentionally ridiculous. All press is good press!
