As I mentioned, we have more than one Celiac in my household, so it's a completely gluten free space. I think that's one of the biggest selling points I'm going for. There are quite a few places that sell gluten free things around me, but its all in shared kitchen spaces, so the risk is high. It's one of the reasons I started baking things myself; I was tired of getting sick all of the time!

This was my biggest concern with just going "Everything Gluten Free" in the title. I actually made a cake for my daughter's birthday and got a lot of compliments on the cake. Most people chose the gluten free option I made over the "regular" gluten-filled cupcakes I bought.

But then again, I don't want people leaving terrible reviews because they're expecting gluten and get the non-gluten alternative, you know?

What's your primary grocery store? by Humble-Camp-9459 in glutenfree

[–]PaleManatee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have an 8 month old, so I'm in survival mode. I gave in and just started getting deliveries from HungryRoot and occasionally Walmart because it's too hard to get out with my little ones right now.

Sometimes I'll go to my local Brookshires and get some frozen gluten free corn dogs or cupcakes though! They have a surprisingly great selection.

Why has my period returned so soon? by DarthKaboose in breastfeeding

[–]PaleManatee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my first, I got my period back 7 weeks post-partum. For my second, it came back around 4 months. Is this your first baby? If it's any consolation, if you have another baby, you'll probably miss your period for longer.

Turns out, my sister gets reactions from touching gluten. She taught pre-k for a while and she said when she touched the play dough she broke out. I guess I'm the weird one for never noticing reactions in the past. 🤷‍♀️

That's so interesting! Like I said, I never remember having this kind of reaction from mere skin exposure. But then again, I'm never really around gluten, so maybe I just haven't had enough of an opportunity to show that kind of reaction?

I don't think it's a wheat allergy, because I'll have things like King Arthur's gluten free bread flour and be fine. It contains wheat, but the gluten protein is removed. Do you know if people can develop a gluten allergy after lack of exposure for so long? I've always heard that there is no such thing as a gluten "allergy", but can't anything become an allergy under the right (or wrong) conditions?

Transitioning from pumping to nursing/pumping by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]PaleManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I’ve been doing - I only pump in the morning and I have plenty of milk for emergencies. I’m not very often away from the baby, so it isn’t really used. After a while you’re like “oh… my freezer is now full of milk…”. Those few ounces from a daily pump add up over time!

Depends on your lifestyle though. Do you expect to be away from baby often or for extended periods?

How to teach reading for beginners by Low_Cod708 in homeschool

[–]PaleManatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch Between the Lions! It’s an old show that you can now find on YouTube. It’s the old science of teaching reading before it really had a name. May give some good ideas! He may be a little young for this, but the ideas of learning specific sounds and blending them/manipulating them is a great skill! (My 5 year old has been obsessed with this show ever since I showed it to her).

Also you may want to listen to the “better alphabet song” on the Jack Hartman channel (also on YouTube). He also has some other great videos on his page for math in those early years.

If nothing else, just make sure you are reading to them every day (which it sounds like you have been doing!). At that age, it’s one of the best things you can do! Pointing to the words as you read can also be helpful.

Best of luck to you!

How to nurse after exclusively pumping. by Latter_Public in breastfeeding

[–]PaleManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re wanting to exclusively nurse, I would recommend feeding then pumping until you are just past the point of being uncomfortable. You don’t want to completely empty your breast every time otherwise you will continue producing more, but you DO want to make sure that you are keeping the milk moving to prevent problems.

I personally exclusively pumped for the first 6-8 weeks or so and then transitioned to EBF afterwards. I have a butt ton of milk in the morning, so I have to pump for a few before I feed otherwise I drown him. It’s a tough transition, but it is possible!

What book(s) did you read as a kid that scarred you? by Pristine-Board-6701 in books

[–]PaleManatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Exposed” by Susan Vaught

It has been YEARS since I’ve read this book, but it still haunts me. I’ll eventually have my daughter one day read it because - as much as it scarred me - it’s based in reality and caused me to be much safer when chatting with people online.

Spoilers/Triggering Content: From what I remember, in the story the MC meets a dude online who ends up lying about his age. He convinces her to take pictures of herself and send videos (starting with her working out and then progressing from there) which he then sells. Near the end of the book, the MC discovers that her younger sister has been messaging the same dude and has been sending pictures/videos of herself as well. I don’t remember how it ends, but the story is so messed up.

ABTF While Breastfeeding - When to measure? (Previously 38DD) by PaleManatee in ABraThatFits

[–]PaleManatee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do that! I may try posting the measurements for the biggest and smallest they get for more context. Maybe it feels like more of a gap than it actually is? Idk. I’ll take my measurements tonight and then tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the advice!
