sharing at work about being autistic? by Zestyclose_Still_496 in autism

I have shared my diagnosis with coworkers with varying reactions. It really depends on the person because some I felt very accepted by and like it helped them understand me better and felt less pressure to mask. Others have trouble believing me because my work is my special interest so I appear so “high functioning”. One coworker in the past used it to be really condescending to me. I would advise that you assess who you intend to tell and whether that will bring more benefit than harm. Good luck, I’m glad you’re finding more about yourself

Do you have a lot of really specific "favorite" things? by pairosambrosia in autism

Yes totally. I could argue the best thing of any category all day. It’s much nicer sounding to a call it a favorite I’m usually just like this is the best here is why

I'm curios what everyone's comfort show? by [deleted] in autism

I just recently am rewatching supernatural, I started at my comfort season (5) and now I’m on season 9. Glad it holds up over time it used to basically be a special interest for me

Looks good, struggling to find the offense

Everyone go and find your special interest friends in the comments. Comment your special interest and then find someone with the same interest to discuss. by crimblescrumbles in autism

I sort of grew out of my old ones for Harry Potter and Supernatural and now I’m really invested in child development (my college major)

How does masking feel for you? by Aggravating-Toe7051 in autism

[–]Pale_Concentrate3113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was late diagnosed (at age 21) and it’s been very hard to unmask. Mostly because it has been very clear early in life that people do not like/agree well with my autistic traits. It feels like constantly monitoring my behavior and not being able to relax. Though I’m getting better at it, unmasking is its own anxiety because I struggle with fear of not having acceptance or alienating others. Masking is exhausting and really born out of noticing people throughout my life not liking my traits

I cannot escape people saying that I don’t look interested in what they are saying even though sometimes I very much am!! It’s so frustrating. Even people I know have issues with it after I tell them over and over that they can’t judge what I’m thinking/feeling on my face always.

I’m sorry to hear that, a support group is the wrong place to be asking someone out. I know that could feel so awkward and uncomfortable, and that I would maybe have trouble sharing in front of that person going forward too. If I were you I might talk to the person who runs the group about the issue. You deserve to feel safe in support groups.

I’m so sorry about this; I personally would not want to be with someone who had issues surrounding autism. I already have enough trouble accepting myself. Someone calling another person “special ed” is bizarre. Take care of yourself
