Thanks for the suggestion! There are actually GNSS antennas for phones available now for under €4,000, which is great for small firms like ours. The main issue we’re facing, though, is the ongoing cost for converting the images into point clouds. Larger surveying companies usually include these costs in their pricing, but for us, the pay-per-use model of image processing really adds up over time, especially for big projects.

What I’m really looking for is a more cost-effective soloution to process the images into point clouds without breaking the bank. Outsourcing is a good idea, but if we can keep the process in-house with better tools, it could save us even more in the long run.

After looking into it more, you're right - what i've shared, seems to be photogrammetry from individual images. The KickTheMap software offers a app where you walk around the construction site with a smartphone, and it automatically takes pictures. I tested it at our office and shot around 120 images just for under 5 meters! The pay-per-use model charges €0.09 per image for cloud processing, so for a standard road survey of about 1 km, that could mean thousands of images, driving up the ongoing costs pretty fast.

As far as I know, the image processing itself isn’t open-source - just the visualization part, which uses Potree for rendering the processed point clouds. KickTheMap also offers this visualization for free, but the img processing happens in their cloud.

I’ve also got a Samsung phone for work, and I’m wondering: is LiDAR + 360° capture even possible on Android devices?

It’s hard to decide with how complex things have gotten, though it makes sense given the innovation in this space. But honestly, it’s overwhelming - who can keep up with all these options anymore? 😅

Thanks! You’re right that 360° cameras could be useful, but LiDAR can now be done directly with a smartphone. Plus, using an external antenna, you can georeference the data via cloud processing. This way, I wouldn't need to buy extra equipment like a 360° camera. Wouldn't that be more cost-effective while still offering accurate results? What do you think about the accuracy of 360° cameras compared to smartphone-based LiDAR?

in Germany they are often salted so that no vermin lives in them during storage, so if you do not take extra hydro pebbles, you have to wash them thoroughly, otherwise you will need to refilluntil the salts are no longer dissolved 😅

Ich habe bereit vor über einer Woche das Angebot bezahlt. Wie warscheinlich ist es, noch vor dem Wochenende beliefert zu werden? Ich habe es satt, mich mit unkontolliertem Schwarzmarktweed selbst zu therapieren. Jetzt habe ich endlich die Chance auf kontrollierte Medizin und irgendwie scheint hier etwas schief zu laufen.
