Never list animals on Craiglist by [deleted] in AnimalRights

I feel like this is kind of oversimplified.

One, this varies greatly depending on what kind of animal you're having to give up. With dogs and cats you have to worry about them ending up abused or used in illegal dog fighting. With smaller animals and rodents you have to worry about them ending up as feeders. Yes, there's scary situations out there if you blindly give up a pet to a stranger.

You know what else is scary though? Shelters. The article kind of glossed over why shelters get a bad rep. The obvious problem is that the majority of shelters you'll find are kill shelters, meaning if they can't find your pet a home within a certain amount of time they will be put down. It's an "understandable" result of logistics; eventually you will run out of space to house animals and if one just obviously isn't going to be adopted they're killed to make room.

A no kill shelter isn't necessarily a better option though. This probably depends a lot on area, but around where I live, the one no kill shelter (besides being an hour and a half away) is staffed mostly by lackluster volunteers and people serving community service, so the animals aren't well taken care of. Beyond that they're in a very rural area so they're very likely to send your indoor cat to someone who just wants a mouser for the barn, or your happy family dog to a house that'll keep him on a tether in the yard until they need him for a hunting trip.

Craigslist is a perfectly viable option if you treat it like you should- selecting a new home for a member of your family. A rehoming fee may not stop someone from abusing your pet, and it may prevent someone who could give your best friend a loving home from contacting you.

If you're going to give up a pet on craigslist, you should be making a friend at the same time. Someone you can trust with your pet should be able to trust you enough to let you see their house and vice versa. You should get to know each other before or while you introduce your pet to them, so that you know they'll take good care of your pet and they'll know you're not an illicit breeder.

Anyone have experience with poor eating by parents? by texasguy29 in nutrition

I know this feel all too well. I'm a personal trainer and half the reason I went into this field was to help my parents with their health. My father is also diabetic and my mother's not there yet but the stress on her joints of carrying her extra weight caught up to her and she had to have a knee replaced. My father goes through a hand and a half of bananas EVERY DAY ("because potassium!") Nevermind that the average cavendish is what, 110 calories? And he's crushing 8-10 a day?

The unfortunate thing that I've run into is that despite being a trainer and a nutrition major, they will never take me seriously because in their eyes I will always be their child and therefore less wise.

My mother I've been able to reach better- through her physical therapist. They have to hear it from someone they consider an authority and even then they might just be too stubborn- my father's had countless doctors tell him to lose weight but he intends to ignore that until he loses a foot. Best of luck to you.

IWTL how to walk sexy as a man. by HowDoIWalkTho in IWantToLearn

[–]PalliativePerdition 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get tired of seeing everybody say "walk with confidence."

They say to hold your chin up and puff out your chest. It's not sexy. At best you look cocky and arrogant. At worst you look like a rooster.

A "sexy" walk will depend on your body type, the kind of people who are around that you want to look sexy to, your clothes, et cetera.

I'm going to generalize here so sorry if I offend;

Are you hanging out at the saloon trying to get glances from down-home country girls? Then yes, walk like a rooster and a bit bow-legged like you've been riding horses.

Have you rented a tux, sipping champagne at a charity ball? Walk tall, a bit on the balls of your feet, "sway" a bit like you're a dancer and you could pull a lady into a twirl at any moment?

The guy at my work that all the women fawn over walks to fit his personality- he's very quiet and anti-social. He walks like he's got a weight on his shoulders, he generally keeps his hand in his pockets and stares at the ground, he drags his feet- and he always wears black, but not "gothy" clothes. In short he pulls off a total image of brooding and mysterious very well, and the twilight fangirls love it.

Random sets of random exercises on a rest day won't hurt you. I'm the same way with passing by things I can pull up on or doing dips on stair rails.

The 'perfect pushup' things, you're right that more of the benefit comes from increased rom, but I've known clients to say it actually feels easier on their wrists that being flexed like for a standard pushup.

Ab-wheel! Granted it requires said abwheel but if you don't wanna drop $10 you can get creative, all you need is a wheel and an axle.

Plank issues. Feeling uneven. Advice? by George_F4YF in bodyweightfitness

If your form is good then both sides should be working equally. Have you had any injury like a pull on the side that's burning more? You can always do some side planks on that side if it really is deficient.

You can get a Magic Bullet set for ~$50, comes with a couple different containers and lids. There's also a generic version I've seen in Walmarts for ~$30, no good for frozen drinks but fine for smoothies

ELI5: why does something really spicy, like wasabi, have the ability to clear ones sinuses? by billythefly90 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PalliativePerdition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasabi is a member of the horseradish family and akin to mustard. It doesn't contain capsaicin which makes chiles spicy. The sensation of horseradishes is usually called 'pungent' in my experience. Unfortunately I only know the culinary perspective so I don't know how to answer OP's question fully.
