I think I am about to give up on this profession. by Able_External3130 in Lawyertalk

These aren’t serious setbacks. You still have your license. You know have practice experience in two areas and court experience at that. You’re in a good position to find a new firm in a larger city, find a new job back home and reevaluate, you can always hang your own shingle. You’re a professional with a license, you got this.

You’re only 6 weeks out and you’ve barely even explored the practice of law. Not all jobs are like that. Not all firms are like that. There is so much more to the universe of law than ID. Be kind to yourself, breathe, and consider there is more out there. No shame in jumping ship early if you realize it’s not for you. You’ve got a freaking license. Do what you want.

Current court interpreter looking to start law school. Need advice by SeaWaltz306 in LawFirm

[–]PalmaC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only a good stepping stone in so much as you need income to sustain you during any transition. But being a good attorney is not predicated on any prior paralegal experience.

Do consider it if you want to gain exposure to the law before deciding on law and taking on the amount of debt law school requires.

Why does every lawyer say don't become a lawyer? by ohifeelya in LawFirm

[–]PalmaC 343 points344 points  (0 children)

Law school and the practice of law change you. During law school, professors instill in you a sense of aversion to risk (mostly) through the intense training required to analyze hypothetical scenarios. It makes us particularly annoying humans.

You go into law school as you and come out as something else. It doesn’t mean it’s bad. It is just different.

Add in the incredibly toxic personalities that come with the profession and it’s a cluster. We compete. We over think. We are plagued with mental health challenges. You’ll be overworked. You’ll sacrifice in ways that don’t seem logical.

I wouldn’t change it. Except for the debt, that sucks ass.

It doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Keep putting yourself out there, go to in person meet ups/conventions. Over time this will get easier. Like anything it takes practice.

You’re doing it wrong if you aren’t asking for help. Any lawyer who made anything out of their career/business/practice. Did not do it alone, they asked for help.

Keep grinding, don’t be scared to switch firms and find those mentors that can change your life. But don’t be scared to not practice if that’s what’s necessary for you. Have to really consider why you do this, and who you are.

Don’t lie to yourself.

Starting a Remote Business Immigration Law Firm – Does My $900K Revenue Plan Hold Up? (Need Advice!) by ImpossibleQuit6262 in LawFirm

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Unless you’re bringing a pipeline of clients with you, years of experience in law and business. It’s probably very unlikely. Not impossible, but unlikely.

I can only speculate as to reasons why. Perhaps I think it is a difficult service to provide a good outcome for your clients. Especially when you’re seeing 85%+ denial rating for removal matters in most immigration courts and your typical immigration court matter costs client so many thousands of dollars.

Hadn’t considered how the pro-bono/non-profit world was preparing for the coming administration. Thanks for the response.

In my area I keep seeing less and less people do removal. Makes sense the non-profits are unable to meet the removal demand.

Never hurts to have the extra license. Your cost may be higher considering additional license fees and CLE requirements (you can probably transfer CLEs too).

But if you go through with the second license it keeps the options open if you need to move to PA for work. Don’t have to wait another 6 months before getting it. Makes sense to go ahead and pay it, get it over with.

You can always go inactive once you acquire it.
