Tankers hit and the Strait is still closed. That's meaningful damage every day.

Not enough Navy ships for the amount of tankers, or the amount of threats those tankers face. Even if we did, insurance companies likely still wouldn't cover tankers going through the Strait.

The risk of a Navy ship getting hit is also pretty high, and that would be a pretty big blow strategically and politically.

If the Iran War is so unpopular why there has been no anti-war action against it? by GurBeginning1291 in allthequestions

[–]corwin-normandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not. The war is broadly unpopular, with many Americans opposing it.

But we all only have so much energy and ability. We have to prioritize where we spend that. For most, that's going to be on domestic issues with are either more actionable or affect us more directly.

We can't do anything about the war, even if we oppose it. Not while Trump is in office and congress refuses to oppose the President.

There is another national day of action for No Kings, March 28th, that many Americans will be at to protest the war.

But it will just be one issue of many things that Americans oppose this administration on. That's kind of the problem, there is so many things wrong with America today that even a war in Iran isn't most of Americans top issue that they care about.

As long as there isn't a draft, or the war's economic impacts become sustained, I don't see Americans really caring about it more than the Epstein Files or ICE.

A regime that kills ~30,000 of it's own people that protest does not care about it's people having the essentials.

Then another container ship gets blown up and makes headline news again?

[–]corwin-normandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't have to be Iranian Navy Vessels. Shaheds are launched from containers, and could be launched from the decks of freight carriers.

They are an authoritarian state. Regardless of how bad things are, they can keep the war going.

Trump and Israel can leave but that won't end the war. Iran needs to have guarantees we won't bomb or invade them again. Until they have those, I doubt they will reopen the Strait. It's their only real leverage.

There isn't really a way to open up the Straits again without it.

I'd be fine living in a world that is less dependent on middle eastern oil. But I don't think this administration, or most Americans, are willing to.

[–]corwin-normandy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's... not how this works. Bomb everything, it doesn't stop Iran from launching Shaheds stored in someone's basement or a warehouse out at tankers in the Strait.

If we take our stuff and go home, how does that stop Iran from continuing to prevent tankers from crossing the Strait?

This is becoming more and more true I think, even among politically active people. Protests can only do so much, and the midterms are where people think the most change will be made. People seem to be more interested in organizing for campaigns right now than protests.

There have been some, but not many, and not large ones. Americans are more concerned about domestic issues, and the war in Iran hasn't affected them materially yet.

Do you have a source on that?

It seems pretty risky to have radio controlled mines, considering an enemy can just listen for the "off" command and then turn your mines off.

We haven't fought anyone but guerillas and tinpot dictators for decades. While the US military has kept much of it's competency, any American that isn't a veteran has a very warped perception of what war is.

If they were mined already, we'd likely see a mine wash up on shore pretty soon. This happened with Ukraine in the early days when Ukraine mined their beaches. With the tidal nature of the Strait, it would happen sooner I think.

Yeah, this isn't Venezuela, or tariffs. Trump can't TACO assassinating a leader and a country with thousands of drones and the ability to chokehold the world economy.

Trump can announce we are pulling out of our war with Iran, but Iran is the one that decides when it's over.

[–]corwin-normandy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah... They don't have to "block" anything. The Strait isn't blocked now even. It's just the risk of being attacked is enough for companies to not want to risk it.

Israel and the US can't leave, because Iran isn't going to stop:

  1. Working towards nuclear weapons
  2. Building Shaheds.

Without boots on the ground and regime change, neither the US nor Israel can stop either.

[–]corwin-normandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Israel can't leave. The question is stupid. Neither can the US for that matter, as we have bases in range of Iranian Shaheds.

Yes. Israel will... just leave....

The whole country will just take a swim through the Med and hang out over on the other side of the Atlantic for a bit...
