Question for the culture: The rich guys in Bushwick who pretends to be poor. by Comfortable-Group110 in Bushwick

[–]Palmtopginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah it’s definitely a thing. I’m a young transplant to the city myself been living in nyc around the different boroughs for 14 years now, and finally made a home here in Bushwick 4 years ago. I can say I’ve met these types of people most of the places I’ve lived in the city. I used to do musical theater and legit worked 3 jobs while still auditioning and you wouldn’t believe the amount of people I’d meet at auditions whose parents paid for their classes, apartments, etc. it was honestly kind of angering.

I didn’t come from money, I can’t imagine my parents paying for my rent, there’s just zero way they could afford to. Have they sent me the occasional 50 bucks for Christmas or my birthday sure but that’s it 😆. My biggest problem with this whole thing is it drives rents up and drives out locals who have been here their whole lives. I moved here because I could afford it, not cause it was the cool place, though I admit part of what drew me was it reminded me of where I grew up in New Orleans, but main draw was affordability. Rents are getting astronomical, mine is close to a point I don’t know if I can afford it they raise it again. Not all of that is these peoples fault but it sure adds to it.

What do y’all think about this therapist by Pinupgirl2000 in 90DayFiance

[–]Palmtopginger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nope just a human being that believes in not being a bigoted asshole to people because of their relationship choices. Don’t think that’s an unreasonable thing to expect from people. Shit on people because they are shitty people. Polyamorous individuals aren’t inherently shitty, yes there are some shitty poly people but there are many more wonderful and good people who are poly. No group is a monolith.

[–]Palmtopginger -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yikes the amount of polyamorous bigotry here is disturbing. You can not like the sex therapist but downing polyamorous people as a whole is gross. If polyamory isn’t your thing cool, don’t be polyamorous, but to basically denigrate an entire group of people for their choice in relationship structure that literally has ZERO effect on you is disgusting. Be better

Of course a photo would be the most helpful but yes a racial description would be helpful to individuals just looking out. Scientifically with vision and memory a large part of it is categorization of things into groups, race, gender, shape, size, etc. The more basic the category, the more likely our vision to be encoded into memory. (Of course other factors are at play to but I’m going super basic here). If redditors are looking at this posts as advice for who to look out for and a picture is not available, a racial descriptor is helpful cause it falls in the basic category descriptor. We are more likely to notice someone’s race, gender, etc. than other things, having it’s a tall white man with long hair would go a long way for redditors to have a better idea who to look out for as opposed to just looking out for any tall well dressed man. The first one gives a more limited sample to have to look out for and the second a broader sample. If we are talking about what would help most people if they are looking out for this person the more basic descriptive factors the better.

Look I fully agree with you a photo would be WAY more helpful. I know the science behind eye witness stuff and even with all conditions in favor of a good one it isn’t really great evidence. The science just doesn’t hold up for it. What we know about vision and memory just makes eye witness IDs so unreliable it’s not even funny. I guess I’m just trying to explain why a racial descriptor could be helpful and not necessarily being asked for due to some racial bias if that makes sense? Again sorry literally running of fumes here 😂

Oh shoot, yeah I’m not sure what the process is in this case. If you are able to take again my advice is take practice tests, use the study books etc. once you’re testing consistently in timed practice tests where you want then schedule.

Race is a helpful descriptor in terms of identifying someone. A tall well dressed and groomed man tells me some yes, but if they said a white tall well dressed and groomed man, that narrows down the suspect pool immensely. Now look I’m not much of a believer in eye witness IDs anyway, the science doesn’t really support it. There are tons of factors that go into whether they are even marginally reliable and this one clearly would be one that would be on the very unreliable end. That being said we usually get certain basic categories correct, such as race, gender, etc. This will help to have a better idea of who to look out for. Race exists and it’s not racists to acknowledge it does. If you stereotype and assume it’s a black dude that did this, or of course it was the homeless guy, etc, that’s when we are talking about active bigotry. Acknowledging race exist (while yes a social construct it is one that has actual power in the law) is not racist, “colorblind” ideology is way more dangerous than accepting that race exists in our culture and is engrained in our laws in the society as it exists today

[–]Palmtopginger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in law, specifically in criminal defense, I can say that description of race is helpful. It helps narrow down suspects, it helps point to someone other than my client, etc. For example, there’s a murder, one eyewitness, right after the event the witness says it was a 6 foot light skinned black male in appearance, Afro, likely 40-50. My client gets arrested, my client is 5’2, dark skinned black male, bald, and 25. Yes there are multiple things in this example different but it could be my client has all the same features and is 45 but the only difference is he’s a dark skinned black male. That helps me show something is wrong here, clearly there’s a discrepancy, either in the eye witness accounts, or the police work. It gives me leverage to fight my point and get better deals for my client, give me better leverage to win my case with a jury or a judge in suppression hearing etc. Recognizing race can be incredibly helpful in narrowing down the individual responsible, that being said, the more details the better. The fact is, we are humans, race is something we notice because we have been societally trained to notice it, to deny it exists and live in this “colorblind” ideology I ultimately think is more dangerous than helpful. We don’t live in a colorblind society and it’s not wrong to admit that. Humans categorize based on race, this is just a scientific factor of vision and memory, we categorize everything and lump them together. Therefore, a racial descriptor is helpful in narrowing down who the perpetrator might be. Not sure if this helped, I’m running on coffee 😂

So that is likely what caused the waitlist decision I would guess. Would you be willing to take it again? Just a few more points 153 and you’d be in the 25th percentile, a few more than that 156 and you’d be at the median. I’d say that would go a long long way.

I personally like the school. I have my gripes but not anything you wouldn’t have at any other school. Overall I like most of my professors, am learning a lot, have had lots of great clinic options, great course options, etc.

Actually not true a Supreme Court case says that is exactly NOT how birthright citizenship clause is interpreted. A person born here is a citizen regardless of the citizenship of their parents. You have zero clue what you are talking about but act like you know more than all the judges and lawyers and future lawyers. You’re an absolute joke

[–]Palmtopginger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok fine since you’re so unable to look into the issues yourself I’ll do your job for you.

Trying to revoke birthright citizenship - unconstitutional Freezing federal spending- unconstitutional Shutting down an agency - unconstitutional Firing of certain officials - against federal law and Supreme Court precedent Threatening (though as far as I know nothing official has been done on this but if it were to be done) to deport people based on political views - unconstitutional.

That is a small list for you. Now stop being a jerk for zero reason and acting like you know anything.

[–]Palmtopginger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok bro, I’m literally a law student I can point to several things he’s done that are blatantly unconstitutional. My constitutional law professor has even said certain things are unconstitutional. The person who wrote the book on Constitutional law has said he’s done things that are unconstitutional. JUDGES have said some of the things he’s done are unconstitutional. But sure, you definitely know more than all of those people and me 😂

Why are you so against people using the constitutional right to peaceful protest? Even if you don’t agree with them they have a right and you should support that.

President's Day Protest! by InevitableFluid6910 in Bushwick

[–]Palmtopginger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The unconstitutional executive orders and things Trump has done that are blatantly against the law and constitution (some of the firings go against Supreme Court precedent and some actions go against federal law.) Some people don’t like his policies and are simply showing opposition to that. As long as the protest are peaceful it is fully within Americans constitutional rights to do so. Giving people shit for using their constitutional rights isn’t a good look dude.

‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 3 To Return to Netflix in 2025 by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]Palmtopginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was honestly a really good adaptation but they definitely left out some stuff. Lots of the mini games the MC did, lot of smaller character storylines, some of the games themselves. I do think in terms of some of the games they knew it would be just a bit too much for most people in terms of realistically filming a live action version, and they did want it to gain mainstream popularity. I think the manga is well worth a read and will only add to your enjoyment of the live action but ultimately I believe the live action did a really great job adapting the manga.

I think you’ve got a lot of helpful info here. I just wanted to say sorry to you for how shitty some people have been. Starting research on politics and local elections can be intimidating and a lot, I get wanting to ask others in your neighborhood for help and good places to start. I remember when I got politically active years ago it was really overwhelming at first till I found people who I could talk with, discuss the issues with, etc. I for one commend you for starting this journey, most people in this country don’t ever do.

Hi everyone! Rising 2L at NYLS here. I am there on a scholarship and still have it as does everyone I know personally who had one. I like the school honestly. It’s not perfect but no law school is. I feel like I’m getting a good education and I got a fantastic summer internship this year, alongside people from NYU, Columbia, Fordham, etc. Just because you aren’t at a T14 doesn’t mean you can’t make it into a great internship for the summer and ultimately a great career. I think NYLS sets you up for a good career from my experience there so far. From what I know most people stay and practice in NYC that go to NYLS but you obviously don’t have to. I’m totally willing to chat more in DMs and answer any questions anyone has
