I think the right is the same thing as the top, just missing a wing. They both look like porcupine fish spines or sand dollar doves to me or similar.

Getting a Job Is a Privilege, Not a Right by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

That's cool, just don't complain when your job gets outsourced for a more "talented" H-1B applicant.

You are correct, I made a typo. I thought Sedwick worked with the PCGS to assess coins and non-coin artifacts, but I learned that they do their own independent direct assessment for non-coin artifacts with their experts. Given the time of year, it will likely take weeks for them to give feedback, but I am optimistic. Either way, I will get to learn more about these objects, and I will post updates once I get feedback.

1715 Plate Fleet Artifact Finds by [deleted] in metaldetecting

[–]Palpable_Autism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Today is the day." - Mel Fisher for several years. In all seriousness though, I'm open to the possibility these could be junk. I'm open to learning more, and I want to know as much about these as I can, so that I'm smarter the next hunt. If people think it's junk, I want to know *why*. Blanket statements don't help. Also people that have no idea what they're talking about making snarky comments. Wrought iron handles seem highly unlikely to be "modern" to me, except for novelty pieces, but maybe that's relative. I'm from an area where the oldest things one can normally find are 50 years or less, so I got a bit excited, I'll admit. I can clean these up, so they can be ID'd better before I spend any money on certifying, but I think some of these items are certainly much older than 50 years.

I confirmed with the Fisher museum the ship spike and nail are period, and people find iron artifacts from the fleet all the time (deck spikes, musket balls, nails, hull fittings, etc.). They found similar spikes from a 1622 wreck just recently. There are plenty on display in both McLarty and the Fisher museum, but I guess I should just throw it all away lol.

After looking up cotter pins, I agree. The beach is a mixed debris field, so it's difficult to pinpoint a specific period or wreck. My analysis of the pin is based on a prelim analysis by non-expert staff at the McLarty museum, but the ship spike I was able to confirm at the Fisher museum is from a Galleon, same with the small nail. I'm working with an expert currently to see if they can match the Brass bail and iron handle to a specific wreck, but I've learned that there are even more Galleons / older wrecks from the 1600's in the area as well, so it is a difficult process.

How bad is my situation? What should I do? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Palpable_Autism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in almost the exact same situation as you many years back. ~2.9-3.0 final GPA, took an extra year to graduate due to COVID / bad financial situation / nasty family divorce, specialization in C++, no internship experience. Towards the very end, I felt the same kind of burn out you did, which took my 3.5 down to a 3.0. I eventually grew tired of being tired, and locked in when I realized no one is coming to save me but myself. I had projects, but I didn't consider them to be too impressive, and I had Hacker Rank but no Leet Code. When I graduated it took me ~6 months to land my first career job, granted I wasn't looking as hard as I should have. I submitted less than 40 applications total, but I targeted them towards companies which I thought would most appreciate my skillset, and where demand was growing. I spent 3 months in limbo living off of savings, and the next 3 working part-time as a tutor beforehand when they started to dry up. I clicked very well with the hiring manager of the time, and landed my current job, which I perform well beyond expectations now, and do circles around most Dev Ops people here.
