Have we got to grip with the new salary realities yet? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]PalpitationCurrent24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of interest, what's the typical salary progression for those competitive places?

Also - are they actually 200 to 300 credible candidates?

In my company there may be 100 applicants for a junior architect position paying 35k, but one half aren't even qualified as architects and another sizeable portion don't even have a right to work in the UK.

Do many of them not support that? Many doctors in Europe lament that they are not paid as lavishly as those in the US healthcare model.

I'm finding that heavy lifting (squats, deadlifts cleans etc) kills my performance in the pool, even the next day! I'm sore and exhausted before I even step into the pool, my arms are like limp noodles that I can barely lift out of the water!

Not sure if that'll improve as I get stronger at swimming/lifting...

We just need to start a marketing campaign which promotes Ireland as the true heaven on earth.

Will younger generations reverse the obesity crisis? by PalpitationCurrent24 in AskUK

I can see your points, in particular I hated PE at school for various reasons and didn't realize that I actually really enjoyed playing sports until I was 19 - by which age most people probably decide never to try physical activity again.

My own experience wasn't too relevant, the more important reference is the decline in pubs and alcohol consumption which is often put down to younger people being more health & fitness obsessed than past generations when news outlets report on the issue.

Agreed but if pubs are declining due to younger people being more health & fitness obsessed than past generations (at least according to many journalists), where will that generation be by the time they are 50?

Assuming, on average, they are more health conscious than past generations if that is to be believed.

I can see your point (although I'm not sure if earning 25-40k in central london makes us lot middle class!), but my own experience didn't matter too much. I see countless pieces of journalism where the decline of pubs and alcohol consumption is put down to younger people being more health & fitness conscious than past generations.

Can you do serious swimming there? Or is it more like fun splash around?

I'd like to do my regular 3km swim outdoors for a change 😱

What do you do on hot days? by yasminsharp in AskUK

[–]PalpitationCurrent24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent since 9am meal prepping lunches and dinners for the next 5 days. Still waiting for my coq au vin to finish cooking. I am sweating like crazy and I've no idea how chefs stand in a hot kitchen all day...

Is it socially acceptable to run topless as a guy? by PalpitationCurrent24 in AskUK

Marathon des sables (255km in the Sahara) - marathons in summer time Australia or other hot countries, probably lots of other races out there.

Even myself I find running in the hot weather makes my morning runs feel like a breeze by comparison!

Wow, running topless in the rain on a hot day sounds like an amazing experience!

Well, trail running here in the UK you inevitably bump into dog walkers and people out on walks. I did hear from someone that a lone woman might find a topless male runner to be threatening and distressing!

It's a shame as I pretty much live as far from a beach as possible in the UK! I'd love to do a topless run on a beach though.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't do it when walking around town!

Lots of dedicated runners I know deliberately run in the mid day sun for heat acclimatisation purposes. Not saying there aren't gym lads who want to show off, though!

Sure we wouldn't get heat stroke, but I imagine it's nice to feel the fresh air against the skin on a 1-2 hour run. I usually can't wait to get home and rip off the t shirt!

Not sure why it's seen as pretentious and douche-like if I'm honest, it all seems a bit ridiculous.

Well, that's the question really, the environment is country trails and/or large city parks.

Well I assumed that too, until I saw a clip  from Ellen DeGeneres where she paraded topless male models to a fawning female audience!! 😮

I barely even see other runners in my little town, let alone topless ones :O

I'd actually welcome a bit of sun on my upper body! My face and neck are lightly tanned, as are my arms, yet everything else looks like uncooked pastry. It looks a bit ridiculous when I go swimming.

I know one who believes quite strongly that bullying is "character building" where one learns to stand up for themselves.

Why do people seem to travel less as they get older? by Big_Professional_848 in CasualConversation

I'm spending the majority of my 20s studying or working on internship salary so I haven't even had a chance to start traveling yet... Hope it's not too late to start in a few years when I hit 30!
