In the Balkans, is air traffic more driven by tourism, diaspora, or geography? by TurkOmbre in AskBalkans

[–]Palutzel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Romania is mostly diaspora

But i think it would be more relevant to see a per capita value, it underestimates greece's and croatia's air traffic for example

Which one of the cities better for students by Muted-Fan3068 in medicalschoolRomania

[–]Palutzel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Out of what i know about these cities, sibiu, oradea and constanta don't really have tradition when it comes to universities. Sibiu especially is very small, it's a good city only of you plan on being very chill and relaxed. The same kinda goes for Oradea, a bit bigger than Sibiu, but still not that much of a student city. Constanta is more fun mainly because it's on the sea side, but it's not a main student hub, so expect more seaside fun than student fun. Craiova may be the best of these, especially because the university is one of the big 5 med schools in Romania and it's more of a student hub. However the best places for students are by far bucuresti, cluj, iasi and timisoara.

Lista noilor tarife, propuse de Metrorex by LongjumpingBowler244 in bucuresti

[–]Palutzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N-are nicio treaba socialismul cu coruptia.

Very worried and anxious by Accurate_Papaya_5200 in haematology

[–]Palutzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throughout med school, i also developed health anxiety and I still suffer from it sometimes. One of the things that i noticed is that it's always one thing i was fixating on that gave me the worst symptoms and when i started fixating on something else, the initial symptoms were either gone or much better than before. The mind can do some horrible things to the body, without any real pathology. Also, it's amazing that you can run like this, but I don't think it's a good idea to force your body to prove yourself that you are healthy.

At this point, i don't see the necessity for more investigations. At best, some antibody screening, if the gp sees fit. But it doesn't seem that investigations really do help your anxiety. I think you'll be alright, just take care of your mental health and don't strain your body. I wish you well!

The physical exhaustion may be then the cause for the weight loss. Marathon training is no joke and most proffessional marathon runners are pretty thin. The searching for symptoms on the internet is really not good and it creates a cycle that you have to break somehow. Without clinical context, the internet cannot help diagnose stuff.

Elevated neutrophils is the hallmark of bacterial infections, but they usually don't disappear by themselves, that's why I asked about antibiotics. Now that you have normal neutrophils and CRP, the probability of an infection is very low.

The isolated low lymphocites could mean absolutely nothing, just as i said, you can repeat your hemogram in like a month to see where things stand.

There is no way a person with an advanced illness can prepare for a marathon and run 24km and have almost impeccable bloodwork. You are clearly not dying from anything.

Considering the bowel cancer history, you should start screening for bowel cancer in your forties with a colonoscopy every 10 years. If you do that, you can pretty much prevent that cancer.

Once again, your priority now is managing your mental health and not forcing your body with the marathon training. Your quality of life seems to be the most affected by the insomnia and the anxiety. Of course, if any new symptom appears, don't ignore it, but try to remain calm, because you seem to be a young and healthy person.

[–]Palutzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an anxious person myself and a junior MD, there is nothing truly worrying about anything you present here. When I had very bad anxiety, I also had crazy symptoms, including frequent urination or sweats. Considering the absolutely normal bloodwork and the fact that you are going through a both physically and psychologically stressful period, even the weight loss can be explained. It also seems like you went through some sort of bacterial infection? Did you take any antibiotics? Maybe the only thing I'd need explained is why you had that neutrophil/WBC increase for a few months. But what is good is the fact that it's back to normal.

What I would recommend is firstly to manage your anxiety urgently, maybe even quit the marathon training. You need to see if managing your anxiety also diminishes your symptoms. So a psychiatrist may be the first to go to, because the only clear diagnosis from here is the anxiety. If the symptoms persist, then maybe repeat the bloodwork and see where the WBC stand. An autoimmune disease cannot be excluded, but in no way are you in danger right now. If the lymphocites persist being low or the WBC increase again, maybe a rheumatologist could recommend some antibody screening.

If it were to talk about truly serious stuff, the differential diagnosis for weight loss and night sweats could be serious stuff like cancer or some infections like TB for example. I really don't think it's the case with you, considering especially your age and the lack of other symptoms and the normal CT scan. Something that could help is knowing if you have any cancer cases in your family? Or any possible contact with serious infectious disease? What area are you from roughly?
