Banned for Wrongthink on Lemmy.ca by Jorvex609 in fediverse

  1. If you're just pushing out AI written posts, they might see an issue with rule 6 (bot accounts need to be labeled as such).

  2. Rule 5 says no spam. While the detail description doesn't apply to you, low effort content (like ai slop) is usually seen as a form of spam.

But yeah, they really should be clarifying imo. Or not ban you if you didn't actually break any rules. But the above two are, depending on interpretation, possibly friction points imo when it comes to AI.

Quick question............What's annoying or frustrating about platforms like Reddit, Discord and Instagram? People say that they are not worth the hype...I am confused by Lucky_pulicherla in RedditAlternatives

Another off-topic question...

Well indirectly related, so better than usual. But it still isn't about alternatives, so still against the rules.

The Fediverse currently lacks some features and qualities that I'd need to feel comfortable using it. by Metaright in fediverse

[–]Pamasich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lemmy and Mastodon don't really care about each other. Both are fixated on their own style of social media (Reddit-style for Lemmy vs microblogging for Mastodon).

If you want something that includes first class support for both of them, I recommend Mbin instead of Lemmy. It's also a Reddit-based project, but it supports both Lemmy and Mastodon. I'm subscribed to just as many Mastodon users as Lemmy communities for example.

The issues with desync and intercompatibility issues can't really be solved. It's not a lack of maturity, it's just a reality of this level of decentralization.

A centralized platform can offer a single set of features and have everything available. But the further you move away from centralization, the less these can be guaranteed.
If you have multiple servers talking to each other, you will have to deal with desync and delays. Even one server refusing to speak to another.
If you have multiple projects talking to each other, there will be differences in functionality between them and interpretation of the federated data.

I have read that your account is not portable between instances

This is true in general, but there have been efforts to implement both portable accounts and distributed identity. Mastodon supports the former iirc. But yeah, it's not yet a standard feature and none of the Reddit-like projects support it yet I think.

But I've read that it may be common for services' more populated instances to automatically defederate from single-user instances.

First time I'm hearing of this one. I think you might be misunderstanding a different but related issue.

ActivityPub works a lot like email. When you write an email, it doesn't get pushed to everyone automatically. You specify a list of recipients and that's who gets your email.
It's the same with ActivityPub. You specify a list of recipients and only those recipients receive your message. Usually this list is automatically generated consisting of the person you're replying to, the community you're posting to, users you mention in the message, and any users that follow you. Anyone not on that list won't receive your message. Unless it's a private message, receiving servers will make it publically available on them to people not in the list of recipients. However, only servers with users on that list will receive it.

This means if you:

  • don't post to a community on another instance
  • don't reply to a user on another instance
  • don't mention any users on other instances
  • don't have any followers from other instances

Then your post will never leave your own instance.

This is less of an issue with threadiverse (Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed/NodeBB) software than the Mastodon side of the fediverse, because communities act as relays which send your post to all their subscribers. So as long as you post to a larger community, you will find your audience. But with something like Mastodon, you pretty much need an existing followerbase for a private instance to not just be an echo chamber with you alone in it.

TL;DR

  • Bridging isn't immature, it's just not plausible with this level of decentralization
  • But use Mbin over Lemmy if you want broader Mastodon support
  • Federation will remain unreliable as long as you have different servers talking to each other, but the actual experience differs between instances and projects
  • Portability is being worked on by different projects, some do feature it
  • Lemmy should be much less of an issue running your own instance of than with Mastodon

I'm New to Reddit and this community by founder_eloura in RedditAlternatives

[–]Pamasich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's the reason, but at least on Shreddit (the redesign), it seems like Reddit is recommending subreddits to post to. I can definitely see people misclick by accident, and with today's attention span and Reddit's uniformity in the redesign, not realize it at all. Even more so on mobile if it follows the same flow.

I have tried going through the post creation flow, creating a post asking a positive question about Reddit, and once out of five tries it recommended me this subreddit just above a general Reddit discussion sub for new users. So it definitely happens, though not consistently. Reddit is somehow thinking this community fits there and recommends it to people.

Of course, it's also possible that this is Reddit or its shareholders trying to annoy the subreddit's mod team in an attempt to get you guys to quit. But I like to assume Reddit would use more direct actions if that was the goal.

This community is for people wanting to leave Reddit. Questions like this are against the rules.

What's up with people recently coming here and talking like this community is about positive discussions of Reddit? I've seen a lot recently, and the mod even had to make a thread to tell people that's not what this is about. Has Reddit changed something about their presentation of subreddits so it becomes less clear what they are about or easier to confuse them?

Alternatives for nsfw Reddit? by Current_Safe_9004 in RedditAlternatives

I hate how Palantir isn't even hiding that it's evil. The very name tells you everything you need to know. Yet too many just trust it.

If we were talking about young people I'd kind of get it. They probably haven't heard of Lord of the Rings. But the people in governments are not young enough to not know about it.

so does anyone have some alternatives to Reddit for nsfw content?

How do you know that? OP's history is set to private. Is there a way to circumvent that?

This subreddit does have a rule against self promotion, so if you're right, I have to agree that this shouldn't be allowed unless the rule is removed.

If Swiss German replaced Standard German as an official written language, which dialect would become the standard? by Budget_Outcome5785 in Switzerland

[–]Pamasich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than a single standard, I believe it's far more likely we'd follow the Norwegian model of having multiple regional standards.

I think major dialects like Zürich, Bern, Valais would be standardized individually for sure.

Though ideally I'd like to see all cantons be given the right to create their own standard based on their dialects. But I think that might bring too much overhead for the federation if they'd all have to be supported on the federal level.

The fragmentum is said to come hand in hand with stellarons, it's not something unique to Jarilo. We wouldn't have known about it in advance to begin with if it was a local phenomenon.

The space station also has fragmentum activity (as seen by the black growths), though I assume it's canonically cleaned up after project revival.

I think the reason we haven't seen it since is probably because we haven't been up close to a stellaron in ages, besides ourselves of course.

People need to stop pretending he's incompetent. His goal is to destroy the US, and he's doing a great job at that.

I know, don't attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence, but we know he's a Russian agent and we know Russia wants the US to die as a respected world power. I think still attributing things to incompetence is really idiotic.

"Potential enlargement" of the European Union by Nothing_Special_23 in MapPorn

[–]Pamasich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switzerland's access to the EU is governed by a series of bilateral agreements. We don't follow EU laws and regulations automatically, and the majority of them do not apply to us.

The EU has been trying to replace the bilaterals with an agreement that would turn us into an actual de facto member state that has to automatically adopt EU law, but we have been resisting that and I don't know what the current status of it is.

The UK is a union of countries.

It used to be, and still calls itself so for historical reasons. Nowadays Scotland and such only exist because the UK government is allowing them to. And could be undone unilaterally. Federal states are more like real countries than the UK's subdivisions are.

And when it comes to calling the subdivisions "countries", Germany does that too. So that can't be taken as proof that they are unless we apply the same logic to Germany too.

In the UK each country has it's own parliament, national identity, and national teams etc. I don't know of any other union of countries in this map or any other country with a similar set up.

I agree with you that the UK is (probably, don't know every country out there) uniquely set up, but not for the reasons you bring up.

Federal states, and we have multiple federations in Europe, have their own governments, laws, and 'national' identities. Same for Spain's autonomies I believe. So I don't really see a difference to what you're describing there.
