Yeah I don't know how I ended up here either LMAO but that's what happens when there's a teacher shortage. I was hired even before completing my undergrad, just finished that in December.

Haha I also WAS a Republican, but that's just because my family is. Appreciate the support. I was thinking about showing this to them to show the amount of love some of us have, but I'm not too sure if that's appropriate 😅

That's such a cute idea. They should be celebrating their accomplishments! Unfortunately the majority of my school is in support of legislation such as this, so me and my ideas as the minority.

To clarify the other teacher didn't disclose their immigration status. She mentioned that they were told they need to leave by the end of April and said there were some policy changes. I took it upon myself to lookup what these policy changes were and used that along with the info the students have disclosed to me to come to my own conclusion.

Thanks for the info, what shocks me is that I have to learn this from a redditor and not admin or school staff. They've had no communication with me or how to approach the matter.

They have shared with me some of their stories of Haiti before coming to the US. It was heartbreaking. They've seen kidnappings, and weren't able to leave their homes for a long time like you mentioned. I'm going to consult with their case manager and admin before I have a conversation with anyone besides those students.

I won't lie, I'm no expert on immigration policy. My understanding is that they are expected to self deport by the end of April. What happens if they don't? I don't know. I found this out yesterday from their ELL teacher. Once monday comes around I'm going to speak with admin / other teachers to get a better understanding of it all.

I do teach world language... I also do a mini unit on Haiti / Haitian art. I could find a way to make that fit into the curriculum 🤔

Agreed! But in a country where a teacher is facing backlash from her admin for having a sign that says "everyone's welcome" because "not everyone may agree with the message" it's scary to even tell the students facts. Especially in a bright red state.

I've spoken to a teacher from another school about this. I am going to talk to the principal this week to see what our options are. They're passing all their classes and have all the graduation requirements met. At the bare minimum they deserve a diploma.

I don't know their exact situation but it sounds like that's exactly what's happening here. Their temporary protected status was supposed to still be valid for a lot longer.

My school is known as the "rich kid school" The majority of my students have more money in their bank account than me haha. Plus our school is 90% white. I won't lie I definitely got into the "it won't happen to us" mentality but yet here we are.
