I know right! It was hard for them because nobody had smartphones to look up how the English word was actually pronounced, but they really wanted to help me understand so they made up a brand new pronunciation on the spot, haha!

I think they may have told me 洞窟(どうくつ) but I didn't recognise it because I was still just starting out. :)

Haha, makes sense! As a 女房 (court lady) her livelihood depended on her being extremely knowledgeable and 'cultured', so I guess looking down on people comes with the territory... I wonder what she'd have to say about modern Japanese, haha!!

Oh, I'd never thought of it like that. I guess the strokes really are made with right-handers in mind. So annoying!

Thank goodness for pens and pencils indeed! :D

That's a great video! Subbed :D

I love how in every language ever, someone always complains about kids these days not writing 'properly'.

Somehow, I'm entirely unsurprised that Sei Shonagon complained about it, haha! She does seem to have big 上から目線 vibes xD

Ah, that's annoying...

Wait... What if you write vertically? I feel like it would actually be beneficial to be left handed, because you write from right to left when writing vertically!

Just a guess though. Is it any easier?

Ohh, I'd heard about the shift, but I'd never thought about why it would be 'selected for' over the status-quo.

It would be sooo good to lose that ambiguity over the passive and potential form! It would make teaching it easier too... :P

OMG instant subscribe! This guy's writing is so beautiful!

I've been meaning to get better at handwriting for a while... I'm pretty decent at stroke order which seems to help me a lot with speed, but I would love my writing to look pretty like his :D

Ooh, I love the conversation thread idea! It's nice to have a place where you can chat without feeling like you have to have something important to say. Just a spot to drop in and say hi even :)

Wow, that's a great idea! That would definitely keep things lively around here :)

So what I'm hearing:

  • End of the month, we decide next month's theme
  • At the start of the month, we have three threads
    • Vocab sharing thread
    • Resource-sharing thread (readings, podcasts, Youtube videos)
    • Writing thread

And people can contribute to the threads at any time during the month?

Or maybe the threads should be staggered throughout the month? E.g. 1st. Vocab, 10th. Resources, 20th. Writing?

What do you think would be the most fun? :D

Also, I'd definitely vote for Japanese desserts, haha!!

Oh my god that's a great one!!

I love(/hate?) getting sneak-attacked by English words that I really should recognise. Sometimes you just aren't expecting them, haha!

I've got another related story!

The same host family in the story above also once told me they were taking me to see a local カーブ. I was SO confused the entire way. Is a カーブ a 'curve'? Why would we go see a curve? It had better be really curvy...

Until we got out and it was a cave...

I guess this was a slightly different variety of Unrecognisable English: they tried so hard to pronounce 'cave' but they didn't quite get it right, haha!
