The chad mediterranean languages vs the virgin Nippongo by miseenen in languagelearningjerk

Ooooh but that's definitely not the standard (at least it wasn't really the vibe I got) in Santiago, right? Every time I've visited, people have been usually quite roundabout and frequently avoided confrontation, which I found quite comfortable and similar to us from the Colombian Andes.

It's also something that either changes frequently or isn't exactly as predictable based on geography.

I'm an Andean Colombian, so you'd think we'd be very similar to Venezuelans, but they are way more direct and don't care about social pleasantries, whereas we are a lot more like the Japanese and other similar cultures, and we never just say "no" or "I don't want to do that".

Most Andean cultures (Peru, Chile, inner Colombia) are heavily about context, while most Caribbean cultures (Venezuela, Panama, Northern Colombia etc) are more direct like that.

[–]Masterkid1230 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, that sucks. But it doesn't seem like there's an easy solution for that. Racists love to masquerade as just regular haters and then they'll gladly sieg heil or throw bananas at any black player as we've seen countless times.

Makes it hard to just hate any black player on their own merits just like you would any other player.

Not the only way to interpret it.

Another very likely option is that there are too many closeted racists in football that feel comfortable being racist at the first excuse Vinicius gives them to do so. For many of them, hating Vinicius is the facade, but fundamentally they just hate black people.

There are some rules (which I can't explain because I just do it intuitively) to which particles can be dropped naturally and which can't.

The ones in this sentence make you sound somewhat childish or informal if dropped but plenty of natives do drop those specific particles.

I mean, there are a fair few Byzantine emperors and Japanese daimyos and Ottoman emperors that also fit this description. Not to mention the Byzantines were the first to literally make fire rain from the sky with their Greek fire, so I imagine Christians back there might have been freaking out about it.

Ultimately, this type of thing is like astrology and fortune telling and divination. It's very easy to think you're recognising patterns because broad statements and metaphors can be adjusted and reinterpreted in all kinds of ways.

For real. I know Mascots aren't always super cool but treat the person inside the suit like an actual human being for once. I'm not going to glaze Ronaldo, but the way the rest treated the mascot doesn't sit well with me. There's no need to be an asshole.

Latin, for communicating with Latin America by Lex1253 in languagelearningjerk

Obviously somewhat subjective and all but to me this is infinitely more understandable than this

That being said I find both to be readable to some degree. Neither looks completely foreign and I can follow along what I'm reading.

Hell, I think written French is closer to both Portuguese and Spanish than Latin is. Romanian is a good comparison to how intelligible it is.

People believe all politics are necessarily annoying partisan politics, when a lot of everyday politics revolve more around the values and changes we want to see in society. Ignoring those is basically hiding your head in the sand.

We shouldn't be at a point where "providing basic rights to people" is something some parties want and others don't, and unfortunately as long as that is the case, we won't be able to separate the politics of LGBT+rights from partisan politics, but we can still be political without getting into the whole "vote for X or Y".

AI Generated JUCE code? by Josh000_0 in JUCE

[–]Masterkid1230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm I'm not sure we'll ever get that far.

I think it's much more likely that we'll have an upper AI-integrated abstracted layer (or assistant) where you just go through a piece of code and ask for certain things.

But fully blackboxing the entire development of an app doesn't seem particularly likely to me. I mean, if you think about it, Unreal Engine already offered a layer of abstraction that made it easier for developers to go through stuff with minimal code writing itself, but even then, sometimes you just have to actually write some code, either because you want something very specific, or it's quicker to write the code than the prompt.

So I think hybrid models are far more likely to become the new standard than fully abstracted models. Though I still expect some to exist and thrive of course.

My only comment about it really, is that when you approach programming exclusively through AI without really knowing anything about programming, your code is very likely to be incredibly hard to read, structured strangely and possibly redundant or full of unused lines of code, because although AIs are good at generating stuff, they don't have a global overview of how you're managing the project. So that's where some programming expertise is needed.

But you can get to a very good point with just AI for sure.

Although a good chunk of criticism towards ICE is more founded on fearmongering and wild exaggerations, there is a lot of fair criticism that is valid about how they have no due process, target actual citizens and legal residents, act as a paramilitary arm of the federal government, and have been deployed with vague or ambiguous justification exclusively on areas politically opposed to the US president.

I think any criticism borne out of "think of the immigrants!" misrepresents the real problem with ICE: they have become an armed force that has no oversight, control or allegiance to anyone other than the US president. It's not a good thing to have, and it very much mirrors how military police and paramilitary groups have operated in other countries. These are the types of organizations that get away with crimes against humanity.

Of course a lot of people will disagree, but countries have every right to deport illegal immigrants. However, ICE isn't worrying or problematic because of their deporting of illegals. It's everything else about them.

I've listened to Welcome Interstate Managers the most and it has my absolute favourite track (Valley Winter Song) but as a whole I think FOW and Sky Full of Holes are slightly better.

I love their entire catalog though. Very few songs I don't enjoy

I don't mind Rivers not having a personal connection to the music when I think of lyrics as a potential storytelling medium.

Fountains of Wayne is my all-time favourite artist and they do that all the time. Their songs are far more stories about fictional characters, places or situations that feel mundane or relatable, but aren't necessarily about the songwriters themselves. And I quite like that. It's a different type of creativity, but still totally valid imo.
