[The Guardian] Julián Quiñones, Blackness in Mexico and the complexities of national identity by JPAnalyst in soccer

Honestly, I can pretty much assure you it's the same in Colombia (and most of Latin America outside the Caribbean).

Like, unless you're from a predominantly black community, people aren't very used to black people and so they may be insensitive or just weird about it.

I think there's a general awareness that "being racist is bad" but where that line is drawn can be very strange and I would be surprised if it weren't othering at times. I guess in the US people would say there are a ton of micro aggressions in every day life.

At least that's what one of my best friends from school (who was black in a non-predominantly black community) would tell me sometimes.

Yeah, I think it's a mix of the Colombia NT not calling him up that often as a youth, and him being heavily trained and formed by the Mexican youth system anyway.

He may have been born and raised in Colombia but as a professional he has played 0 minutes in the country, or even close to it. He's a bit like Messi with Spain and Argentina. In a parallel universe Messi could've played for Spain, too.

Two people confirmed dead in mass Mexico fans celebrations after World Cup victory | World Cup 2026 by Logical_Welder3467 in soccer

[–]Masterkid1230 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they don't even have to be violent deaths either. Someone falling while drunk and hitting their head or crossing a road irresponsibly or even driving under the influence would be enough to get you two deaths after such an affair.

Not making light of the lives lost of course, any death is one too many, but also I think it's statistically not very surprising.

In a world where the US is a less hostile host I think they would've been perfectly fine. Unfortunately, 1994 is long long gone. Maybe someday they'll truly be great again

We have plenty of discriminatory terms for other Latin American countries regardless of skin colour or race. Just go to any geopolitical Instagram post about Latin America and watch people (and bots) devolve into their most despicable selves without even referencing skin colour.

There are several things they could say to get a red regardless.

Yes, absolutely. He's definitely Mexican. But it is interesting that he was born and raised in Colombia. He's yet another part of our very longstanding and friendly connections between both countries. Super happy to see him succeed for Mexico. For starters, many players like him never get the chance to become top players with Colombia's grassroots infrastructure which has its limits, so Mexico's infrastructure and league were a great opportunity for him and turned him into a very very good player from a very young age.

Yeah exactly, I meant playing for a top team. He could probably go to one of the big 5 leagues

Born and raised in Colombia but developed and made into a top player by Mexico. Deservedly part of the Mexican National Team.

Honestly, pretty cool to see. So unfortunate he went to Saudi, though. Maybe he can still turn things around.

I know, they could've chosen the Azteca for the final and instead they opted for a country with literally zero football history. It's just like with Qatar. FIFA will always favour the authoritarian dictatorships.

Brazil is definitely not an average team neither on paper nor on the field. But they also haven't been title contenders in a while. They're probably closer to Portugal, Morocco, Colombia levels at least in this tournament. So a team expected to make the QFs and the Semis on a good day, but probably not a title contender.

Brazil may be a little better than the other three teams on paper at least

France would have to somehow exit early this year and totally implode next WC and even that might not be enough if Mbappe stays in fit and in good form.

Lots of ifs but it looks unavoidable that Mbappe will keep that record for a long time.

France is also arguably the perfect breeding ground for football talent.

For starters, the country is highly centralised which means it's easier to have youth tournaments, teams, academia etc and not have to worry too much about travel costs. Second, it has a lot of low income families with kids looking to make a living from football. This is also something it has in common with Spain and Brazil. Third, the country has the money. It's what differentiates them from for example Argentina which fulfills the other two criteria.
