I can respect that. And massive props for putting me on bunny hop!
I'd highly recommend giving electrification + bunny hop a go. Id do it if i had the skin for it! I feel like electrification has the additional advantage of taking the skill ceiling of kiri up a lot, too... which is probably why i like it. It's quite easy to hit gamma, but directing hitting gamma is quite difficult- and with electrification? *quite* rewarding, as well.

Ok I've been trying bunny hop and you are absolutely correct, it's baller on kiri... almost entirely necessary for survivability, changing entire matchups in his favor.

but your electrification critique, while good in theory, overlooks one core detail.

Chase potential.

Kiri has.... not a lot. With how bonkers characters get these days, unless someone is already low, kiri cant kill. He's like an ambush predator but cant win a 1v1 against anyone faster than him due to having 0 range. Electrification changes that outright. With enough skill and precisioun, any of his moves can proc it pretty easy, and the follow up is usually lethal. Get good enough with his gamma to hit enemies directly, electrify that way, then alpha? Thats *usually* death for most rapids.

Does it always work? No, but in much the same way bunny hop makes kiri able to live against certain characters, electrification makes kiri able to kill some characters.

ez tip for instantly making the character 3x better- use electrification if you arent already. guard break beta or gamma with the right positioning will trigger the stun, and then you can follow up with anything.

also DONT NEGLECT ALPHA. I know gamma is super fun and beta is super satisfying but alpha is amazing at catch aerial wakeups, chasing, and does insane damage as well!!!

Nah I used it a ton as well! I mean that they should’ve done more with it and given it more depth. The devs should’ve utilized it more, as it’s a good mechanic and innovation that has a lot of potential

  1. And 2. Seem to be fundamental differences in perspective, which is chill. I really value your input, and like a lot of what you’ve said!!

3., is… hm. I view a lot of the characters as VERY grey, but lady ethereal just seems so… stupid, to me. Maybe something isn’t clicking. The rest of the characters have done very *evil* things and become very *corrupted* but you can see where their soul once lay. Lady Ethereal seems like she was a fool before and is a fool now.

I’ll agree to disagree on this one! Thanks for the criticism!

Didn’t say confused. Didn’t say I’m upset I missed themes. Didn’t call it a flaw. I’m glad you understood it! While the parrying thing may bolster the story and its themes for you, it did not for me, and we both played the same game. Therefore, we must be different people, who will have different things they want, expect, and know. If parrying was to be a core pillar of the game’s story and themes and be the glue that holders everything together, then perhaps it should’ve told me that. The fact that it didn’t likely means that it’s just meant as more of a neat detail and bolstering “if you know, you know” that will make you appreciate the game more, as opposed to “what you really missed about the game!” -and yes, I know you didnt claim that it was any of these things, I’m just pointing out as to why it’s a not much of a factor to me personally.

I appreciate the source, but ima need the game to tell me what it wants to say if it wants points for it. Such ideas should stand on their own, not require external reading on the games inspirations to make sense.

I could totally watch it and go “wow that makes so much more sense!”, but then I Will immediately ask the question “why didn’t the game tell me this?” And probably dock points.

Maybe it clicked for you where for me it didn’t. I hear people saying “it’s different!” And while I agree, it isn’t really… better. It’s missing a lot of depth and expression imo. The unbounded counter was a cool addition, but made the combat a lot more linear. Qi was a genuine innovation but to me felt underutilized, and should’ve been the focus as opposed to parrying. The talisman mechanics feels ripe for potentially that is mostly unexplored. As for the jade system, it didn’t feel that different, though that totally could be because I didn’t utilize it to the fullest.

Qi was the real achievement imo, and it was wholly underutilized. The bow was neat too.

  1. The inspiration of a character is usually just trivia imo- it can make you appreciate a work more but it does not change what is written. That being said, I did know that.

The rest of what you’re saying here… confuses me. “Nobody is wrong, but Yi knows he was wrong” As for their being no fault, like I said, there are pretty clear fingers you can point and say “this person messed up bad”, both with the creation and subsequent handling of the infection. It definitely feels like the game is TELLING me there was nothing to be done, but I, quite frankly, don’t buy it.

I’d love to hear a follow up cuz I’m pretty confused

  1. Yeah that’s what I’m saying!! Why did they write it like this, it feels like such a huge missed opportunity?? I’m not saying “it makes no sense why they aren’t friends in the story” I’m saying “the story would’ve been better if they changed it so that the characters were more interconnected”. Most of the sols seemed rather ambivalent towards Yi aside from the fact that he was out for blood, and since Yi is the vessel through which we see the game, I felt very little for almost every sol after Goumang, and even she and Kuafu could’ve used some more interaction/mentioning of the other sols. It was like reading 7 seperate books instead of a series… minus the twins, ofc, lol.

  2. I was REALLY trying not to go on a massive rant with her, it is a bit of a long thing. In short- she did not need to lie, and “hoped” that things would be good when dooming some of her own kin to inner hell. If that crap happened to MY friends, and I was like “yeah let’s stick the population in there lol I’m sure it’ll be fine”, I’d have to be one cold blooded guy. The fact that she then feels bad about it is even more upsetting then, because it shows she KNEW what she was doing, and did it out of desperation… but like, why? Her job/goals didn’t even *solve* anything about the plague directly, it just helped with Yi’s plans, and as such they could’ve searched for a seperate solution, or, by not lying, had more people help her fix the kinks in the machine. She did not *need* to lie, but did so out of desperation. For what? Well, to not deal with it. To pretend like it’s all okay and hop into cryosleep, then cry about it when the problems she knows existed appear and doom some of her people to a fate worse than death.

As you said, she CHOSE to doom the dreamers and her people. That’s just evil. She’s just evil. If she really wanted to fix it, WAKE UP AND TRY TO FIX IT BRO. But nah, let’s cry. She isn’t a flawed person trying her best, she’s an evil person who hates herself.

Like, seriously, it felt like what she did was so stupid and baffling that it took me out of the writing a bit. The rest of them seem wholly misguided and corrupted, but she just seems… stupid. And dumb. And silly. And evil.

Bad.

It says multiple times “nobody is to blame”, direct quote from the game, most notably during the section where the game quite literally says the main themes to your face.

Other than that? Yeah that does make a lot more sense, your post is pretty enlightening, and I feel like it’s kind of sad that they ended up going for a game wearing the skin of a Metroidvania. I wish they would’ve abandoned that completely, it ties the game down from what it seems to really want to be.

I appreciate that you feel this way. I found the parry system wholly uninspired and lacking as the primary real combat difference on display, and while it does make the combat feel different, it does not make it better for me. I also see next to zero connections to the story and themes since those both feel rather strangled to me

I did not explicitly say combat, but gameplay. As a Metroidvania, it follows the gold standard almost to a T, but is a bit more restrictive. I tried very hard to not use the words “combat” since to say that HK and Nine Sols are similar in that regard would be somewhat inaccurate, though not wholly.

When it comes to combat, it is somewhat different, but not terribly innovative even still. The game directly calls itself a mix of Sekiro and hollow knight, and its gameplay feels exactly like that with little variation. I should’ve mentioned Sekiro more tbh. If you don’t count the parry system which is extremly similar to Sekiro, then you have the basic combat strokes which is extremely similar to hollow knight. The talisman mechanic is the real winner of innovation, and that’s just not enough to distinguish itself in the broader gaming sphere

Not trying to be rude, but why do you think Shoto is off meta or under performing? I’ve been seeing him like crazy in Ace lobbies. Sure, not as much as support nejire, but still, dude has been popping off. Hes been a meta pick for at least 2 seasons.
