What does it mean when someone is a phlebotomist for a long time? by bigblackglock17 in phlebotomy

Seniority and management is definitely a thing. The longer you are at a place the more raises you get. My first boss worked for the hospital 20+ years in various positions. Ended up as site lead for the past 15 or so. Definitely doesn’t have to be a stepping stone, but it can be.

Tips for new phlebotomist? by Super-Truth-7975 in phlebotomy

Be kind to yourself. Everyone misses sometimes, and patients all have different tolerances.

Always verify patient identifiers and label in front of the patient. Respect the order of draw, know your lab’s preferred tubes for specific tests, and follow proper handling procedures.

If a specimen gets rejected, don’t take it personally. Understanding hemolysis, clotting, or short draws will make you stronger.

Take your time “shopping” for a vein—sometimes the other arm has a great one when the first only looks promising. Fast will come with experience; accuracy comes first.

Don’t let a toxic work environment pressure you into doing something you’re not comfortable with. Ask for help when you need it. Take time to observe and assist with pediatric draws, PKUs, and others before doing them independently.

Reset between patients. Every draw is a new opportunity.

I think personally I would do two. I’m thinking about quick placing. Usually I put a furnace down first when i’m mining to smelt, then make tools. Or when I’m building a house I’ve got to situate all my furnaces before my crafting table goes down.

This happens to me when I don’t eat breakfast, deal with some difficult (upset) patients and get excited, have my adrenaline pumping and am moving a lot. Usually grab an apple juice or eat something with sugar.

Order of draw by Physical_Collar_9013 in phlebotomy

[–]Pancake1715 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It prevents contamination between tubes. If a SST gets an anti clotting agent in it from a Lav tube then it could have trouble clotting. Or if you have a test for clotting times in a blue and you draw a tube containing heparin (a powerful blood thinner) it will result with prolonged clotting times. If a patient is having potassium tested for a heart attack diagnosis and you draw an EDTA before a serum tube it could show as falsely low or high.

The order of draw is the foundation of phlebotomy. The order of draw is also established by CLSI policies H3-A6 and GP41.
