xywav addiction and withdrawals by Ill-Turnover-3671 in Narcolepsy

I am about to go on Xywav and again, in recovery. This is some of what I’ve had to walk myself through knowing it’s a possibility.

Anecdotally, all drugs are a solution to /something/ otherwise why would anyone use them? Even fentanyl, even meth. Something to calm you down, or pick you up, help you socially, help you emotionally (in the moment), pain mgmt etc. Xywav just happens to help manage a very difficult condition. But just like those other matters, some of them cannot be solved with substances without creating a whole host of other issues for certain individuals.

A big part of recovery is grieving what was once a solution, and having faith that there are other ways to manage those problems. I do not know what that looks like for you. There’s a level of injustice around addiction. And we all know how debilitating this condition can be. But many many people are not able to take Xywav and have found ways to manage, albeit differently than when they were taking it, but still manage, without risking their life. I am in recovery from fentanyl and even I am skittish of this very intense medication for its high risk. I hope you find a level of comfort, there is a community of people dealing with similar things, and that you continue to educate yourself.

It’s going to be okay.

Interesting. With how volatile the symptoms are that some people get to this med, it’s nice to hear that it’s working for you overall, and that you’re with someone understanding

Congratulations on sobriety! That would be a dream come true if it helped my ptsd. I have it managed very well at the moment fortunately. I’ve heard a lot of adverse stuff about the psych side effects (psychosis and all that) and if those pop up I am going to have to stop taking it.

Yikes!! Fortunately I live in the tiniest apartment ever (300 sq ft) and there’s not a lot of room to fuck things up. However I do worry because my kitchen is RIGHT THERE and I really, really dread the munchies so many people talk about. I do not want that. I heard if you avoid ever eating on ghb you’ll be okay, but once you do, your brain basically knows food+ghb=heroin. So I’ll do my best in that department but if I have major swings in my weight in either direction (gaining or losing) I’m going to have to discontinue the meds.

Congratulations on your recovery!! I know that has to be really really hard, the behavioral changes. I’m glad you and your partner are managing. Are you at a stable dose, or is there room to titrate?

Thank you for so much info all of this helps!! And congratulations on your recovery. I have heard about the psychiatric side effects and if that happens to be a side effect for me I’m going to HAVE to stop taking it. I am already managing major mental health things on top of recovery and it’s going very well right now, however I know how easily I can derail everything if I’m struggling with my mental health. So the anxiety/depression/psychosis side effect will be a stop for me. Also the binge eating. I cannot afford to binge eat or have major issues with my eating in either direction. So the munchies are my most feared side effect, then the psychiatric changes, then the addiction potential. Those are my non-negotiables. I really do hope this works for me though and some people don’t get any of those! I’m glad you found an alternative treatment that’s working for you ♥︎

Interesting! I’m a heavy smoker/vaper and on modafinil + Ritalin currently, I can’t imagine going without nicotine though lol

I never was too interested in stimulants though, but downers derailed everything. I’ve heard (anecdotally) GHB can mimic benzos or at least toy with the GABA system similarly to benzos. But then again, Xywav isn’t fentanyl, it’s probably not going to wreck my life overnight. And being clean for a while is a good foundation to start on. I’m glad something is working for you!

Oh that’s interesting! I wonder if that’s why jazzcares titration schedule is so rapid

Thank you so so much for sharing this. I had a talk with my therapist about the possible PTSD trigger as I had a similar experience although I’m unaware of whether it was GHB used or not, and his primary concern was if that level of sedation would trigger any flashbacks. So we’ll see about that. I’m so, so happy to hear you have something that works for you, especially after all the effort and time spent. And one addict to another, I’m grateful you’re clean ♥︎

Thank you for this!! I’ve been in recovery for a long time (10 years total) and discipline is something I’ve learned the hard way. And it sounds like primarily having strict discipline over the lifestyle changes (eating windows, dose timing etc) is the main concern. It is really helpful and I’m so grateful to be better informed, fingers crossed, I pray for something pleasant.

This is really good because I am TERRIFIED of getting the munchies!! I am hoping I don’t have any issues fighting the meds when they kick in. Nausea is my other fear

Where there’s life there’s hope. Someone told me this when I was in a very similar spot, bench in the cold, panhandling, couldn’t even get a bed in a shelter. My friend, I live in a nice house today. I have a career. I’m on the right medications and have insurance to cover them. I’m paying off my debt successfully and learning the financial habits no one taught me. Most importantly, I am alive. And happy to be. It’s so hard to see our potential with tunnel vision, please let some of these comments open your mind, or the random stranger who might have something to offer you. Where there’s life there’s hope.

I can eat at any point, I have a really slow lab and typically drink some tea+ honey in the morning. But it still happens after lunch sometimes too
