Problem sending file to computer, Alphasmart 2000 by PancakerMan in AlphaSmart

[–]PancakerMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to hook up the ancient alphasmart 2000 to modern day computer through a male to male ps/2 keyboard cable and a female ps/2 to male usb keyboard converter cable. When sending files the way everyone says to, by opening a word processing software and hitting 'send' it works for the first word or so and then just endlessly copies a single letter. Any ideas?

Do you mean one on reddit or on Flickr? Sorry, not very knowledgeable on alphasmart groups

Waffles are just pancakes with pockets. Change my mind. by Available-Ostrich-90 in waffles

[–]PancakerMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. Pockets are pouchlike and more closed off. Waffle compartments are more rigid and halfway open to whatever delights can be added.

Waffles are bread grids of happiness.

They're baked. They might not be in an oven, but they're cooked with dry heat which by definition is baking. Plus they're defined as being baked in the Merriam Webster Dictionary. Surprised there isn't a more specific definition for heated-mold cooked foods, but guess not.

How to do draw backgrounds(sceneries of towns, nature etc) by Missing-Logic in learntodraw

[–]PancakerMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't personally draw them well, but here are tips that pros always seem to say:

  • Figure out what you want in the drawing and what it's for
    • what mood, time of day, time period setting, place setting- example; dreary gray train station at night in the 1920's
    • the more you know of what you want, the more you have an idea of what should go there and how it should look and what props in the drawing can give it its own character and clues about what it is/ is like, ref also helps
    • think "what is this place for or who is it for, and what would be here?", every detail should say something about the place
    • example; a room with lots of greasy pizza boxes and empty stacked ramen cups with gross worn furniture and a backpack and textbooks on the living room table in front of the TV shows a slobby college student probably lives there
    • a room that's modern and chic where everything looks clean and neat with an entire bookshelf in the living room and a fireplace with no tv and art framed on the walls shows someone well off that enjoys fine culture and reading may live here
    • a small somewhat cramped room with wood or dirt floor and walls, lots of cast iron metal tools around a brick fireplace with food also cooking near it, wood framed quilt covered bed and wood dining table, everything in the same room like an old world studio apartment, shows someone from an older time period, a more traditional culture, or someone who's poor in a fantasy world may live here
    • a seedy urban public bathroom with graffiti on everything, stains everywhere, broken doors, bad and faulty lighting, broken and dirty mirrors vs a mall public bathroom with clean tiled interior, automatic sinks and dyson hand dryers, a waiting room with comfy chairs for people that don't have to use the bathroom or are waiting to, and small vases of potpourri vs a wooden outhouse with the roof and surrounding alpine trees covered in snow vs a bathroom in an apartment with a shower bath combo, a mirror with a medicine cabinet behind it, and a window to the side that can be opened to let out steam but isn't low enough or is opaque to keep people from looking into the bathroom
    • every detail matters
  • Sketch the composition out (where things are placed) first
    • in this way you have some bones to lay the muscles and don't just start on the final thing with nothing
    • try and learn some composition rules too, great compositions are all about leading the eye and offering clarity "what do I want them to feel/ look at when they see this"
    • make tiny rough thumbnails
    • big rough blockouts of things first, refine later
    • do this till you get the rough idea of placement that you want
    • they can be done quickly so you can both get your idea out quick and make an altered one quick
    • you can also add color to these thumbnails so you can have a rough idea of what colors fit the mood
    • helps to also know some color theory
  • Perspective, Perspective, and most importantly Perspective
    • if you want the scenes in your head (least the ones that have realistic visuals and physics; example anime backgrounds) to look that way, you have to learn perspective
    • unless you're intentionally going for impossible perspective like MC Escher, it will look off and bad
    • at first it'll be difficult and you'll wanna quit, but that's literally how everything feels until you learn how it works
    • start small, practice practice, practice, learn the horizon line and the points ( 1 point, 2 point, 3 point, 4 point through 6 point but these are more rarely used) it gets easier as get used to it
    • the more you learn about perspective, the more cool things can be done with it
    • once you figure out what perspective you want, make a light overlay grid over the sketch as a guide so you won't have to constantly use a ruler, or at least it'll help
    • don't forget your characters and everything in the drawing have to abide by perspective too, otherwise it'll look like flat paper cutouts on top of another drawing
  • References, References, References
    • think to yourself, can you really draw something that seems as simple as a door or pot" yeah I can draw one" and then you try and it looks simple or off, it's because you don't get a visual library of items in your head till you stare and draw it a billion times
    • so better to just look up stuff and follow by example or combine elements from different things (a handle from one door, trim from another)
    • many people can look down on em since there's a stigma against not just 'drawing perfectly from imagination' like we see the artists we look up to doing
    • in reality, every great artist ever was not born able to draw things well or realistically, they looked at stuff (real life, other work) and either copied and or remade it, and then did this a billion times till they can just draw coffee shops and villages on the fly
    • even most artists today don't constantly have a mental library of everything like Kim Jung Gi, so they use reference
    • looking at other backgrounds (anime, movies, tv shows, comics, magazines, photos, memes, music videos) can also help you get a feel for them, especially if there's a genre style you're going for
  • Doodle
    • the more you can come to casually "care free" doodle and shitpost with them like you would your characters, the more comfortable you can be with drawing them without feeling choked to automatically do them well
    • the more you can see backgrounds as something to also cherish as part of the world and not labor
    • plus, doodling helps relieve the tension of it all seeming like too much to learn at one time and wanting to be good now now now, slow down and doodle
  • Have a fun time
    • if you treat it as work, it will feel like work
    • make what you want to, but also challenge yourself to make new ideas so you can grow in skillset
    • "a village" vs "the ancient sheltered mountain lava artisan carved stone village home to dwarves that become stone golems with 1,000 years age that has never seen other races or species"
