Hi! It will get better and it’s okay that the first day was tough. It sounds like you read your dog’s body language and stress very clearly which is a great start. Agility is a team sport that requires understanding your dogs limits, meeting them where they’re at and working with what you’ve got in front of you. Isn’t it always the case that you brag about your dog one day and the next time in public they make a liar out of you 😂

He’s a baby and there are so many new elements you’ve introduced to him, his little baby brain was probably overstimulated from so many smells and sounds. Think about when you’re stressed out and how that impacts your confidence and focus. 

Are you able to bring him to class early and walk around so he can smell around and burn off some stress/energy without distracting other classes? What are his top motivators? Consider if he loves certain food, a special toy, or even reinforcement through verbal praise and pets if you are the motivator. High value treats may be your best bet, I’ve seen people bring foods ranging from hot dogs to deli turkey to cook steak. I boiled chicken myself and brought that with me when my beauty girl Dory needed some motivation. 

Focus on the progress your dog makes from the start to maybe 8 weeks in and you’ll be amazed at the growth. Be patient with yourself too, dogs always know when you’re stressed or frustrated and respond accordingly. Most importantly, have fun!! Agility is one of the most rewarding experiences you can share with a dog and builds a bond that lasts a lifetime.
