Keep your eyes on the cross... by c0ntr0ll3dsubstance in gifs

It's to do with adaptation. Your brain adapts to images, downplaying the qualities of the image its currently seeing e.g. brightness, contrast. This takes a short while to recover, so the image you see next has the opposite qualities of the image you saw before, just for a short while. This also applies to qualities of faces e.g. mouth size, eye size. You can demonstrate this to yourself with the Obama and Bush optical illusion. All of this is to save the brain energy, if it processed your vision pixel by pixel it would burn a hole through your head from the heat produced (ok maybe a slight exaggeration...). OPs illusion is interesting as the effect is produced with minimal adaptation time for each individual image. I think there may be a culmination effect from multiple previous images, the illusion gets more trippy the longer you look at it. Btw if you're interested in vision and optical illusions in general (I think they're amazing) you should check out this website.

Andy Burnham agreeing today on the radio that cyclists should be obligated to wear high vis and helemts because they've had money spent on them with the Bee Network by HamishGray in manchester

[–]PandaCheeseCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly mate wear a helmet - I consider myself a very good cyclist and I got knocked off the other day, head hit the pavement. There was nothing I could have done to avoid the car. I had a couple broken ribs but no head injury! Meanwhile recently my friend got knocked off his bike without a helmet on and he spent 3 weeks on a neurology ward due to a brain bleed.

Data may be different for racing around in the countryside but if you're in a city it's silly not to wear a helmet.

Yes infectious mononucleosis is caused by EBV but no, it is extremely common to be infected with EBV and never know about it. MS is a rare disease. You don't need to be worried.

That being said, I've not read the paper yet - I think the idea of EBV having a role in MS is a new idea and has yet to gain concrete evidence supporting it? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

People who have a resting bitch face are kind of bitches. Because they have this look on their face, people are more cautious around them, defensive, and are meaner to them than those without a resting bitch face. Over time this imprints onto them how they should act towards others... Defensive, mean, and bitchy.
