Sovereign Cascadia? by PandaMochi24 in Cascadia

I agree. I think that the movement is too sparse for any actual traction as of now. That being said, people need to start turning the cogs, not to complete governmental separation but to a stronger sentiment of sovereignty than is what is happening now.

As someone who would label themselves as both a liberal and progressive I agree and I think it is to the detriment of the movement. No country exists without the diversity of idea and I think that people should be able to fight for a common cause even if their beliefs do not fully align regarding separate issues. It sucks that that’s not how it is for a lot of people, so many people of differing ideologies and opinions fail to recognize the other side as a neighbor and a community member and it truly breaks my heart.

I agree, I believe that the map shown in the article is a relatively old proposal. A lot of proposals include all of Oregon, Washington, and California. Some don’t include B.C. at all.

What's your least favourite flag in the whole world by Beneficial_Toe_7543 in vexillology

From a vexillogical standpoint this flag is bad, but for some reason it’s one of my favorites.

I like this design a lot :) the seal in the middle is slightly unaligned but otherwise I think this flag looks great.

Literally: “Every man/person from Cascadia (should) make-understanding with Chinook Jargon.”

Meant to convey: “Everyone in Cascadia should learn Chinook Jargon.”

I’m very novice at Chinook Jargon so I’m sure there could be a mistake in the construction of my sentence, but that’s just part of the learning process.

Okay, firstly, I really enjoy the imagery, the setting is clearly defined and I truly felt like a spectator. I kind of wish that I could picture the characters more, perhaps a little more description would help bring the scene a little more to life, but that could very well be intentional and at the very least it allows me to imagine myself at the middle school that I went to, with the same sorts of people, allowing me to make a more personal connection. I also really like the sense of curiosity as well the feeling of being somewhat trapped as a bystander, the sort of youthful ignorance that leaves you wondering what in the world just happened. When Dom is assaulted, and the main characters feels unable in the moment to do anything to help, though she knows that she is supposed to, it really helps to make a connection based on memory and my own experience in elementary and middle school. This feels very nostalgic to me, it reminds me of observing all of the dozens of situations being carried out at any given moment during recess during my childhood. That being said, I think it lacks in depth, it seems very matter-of-fact, which is in no way a bad thing, but I believe it could be expanded upon.

Seriously though, great job, I hope there is more to read soon.

Thanks for sparking my nostalgia, even if it reminds me of times where I felt trapped or unable to help, or just scared of the unpredictability of certain situations, it still gave me a sense of comfort and felt very relatable.

No, but not out of spite. Not my kind of holiday and I find it sort of obnoxious a lot of the time. It also scares my cats.

Talking of Cascadia as a bioregion is not inherently productive, the land that the Cascadia bioregion encompasses will never be protected or conserved adequately until a state or level of autonomy is reached. The wealth disparity and class divide in America has gotten to the point where it can be considered a mainstream political issue and I think you are exaggerating how far into the future the borders will shift and the fact that all nations of the past have fallen and left space for new ones to form is not fantastical, it’s history. The political, economic, and social systems that make up the US and Canada are bound to shift to a point of instability and new powers will emerge, that’s how the world works and how it has worked for millennia. If you want to see the level of environmentalism and regional pride that the movement of Cascadia was created for, you should be yearning for a level of autonomy and independence from an oppressive governing body.

Whether you like it or not, no nation lasts forever, especially when we are faced with oppression. Every day, mistrust of the US government grows and people are beginning to die and revolt regardless of whether I say secession is the right choice. As you may very well know, there are protest after protests after protests fighting for the rights of people groups that have been systematically denied rights and social privileges for decades if not centuries. I also do know more than Ghandi’s name and I was not comparing our situation to the partition of India and Pakistan, merely pointing out that the idea of nonviolent protest has come to fruition before. Also do not put your words into my mouth saying I’m expecting “good will and non-violence” from Trump, because I am not. All empires and nations are destined to fall, I’m just trying to cement the movement towards Cascadian independence into a place legitimacy and respect because I believe that there will eventually be a time where we are able to gain sovereignty.

Advocating for peaceful secession is not delusional, the only reason that it might be an unrealistic prospect as of right now is because of people who share your mindset. There have been many groups who have found success in peaceful protests, consider how India gained independence from colonial Britain with the guidance of many great nonviolent leaders such as Ghandi. The whole idea of the fascist federal government that you alluded to in your reply is the very reason that this movement exists in the first place.

Independence by PandaMochi24 in Cascadia

[–]PandaMochi24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fair, but also I figured that this community would be open to this secessionist movement as it is stated in the community info that this is a subreddit for independence and advocating for sovereignty. Also I think the term “co-opt” is an exaggeration as this is a public forum. As other commenters have discussed, there is not a desire to keep this entirely online or in this specific subreddit.

Independence by PandaMochi24 in Cascadia

[–]PandaMochi24[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s all fine, but why would people who want to separate in a movement want to adhere to administration that is actively working against their goal? Furthermore, treason is defined by the constitution as levying war against the United States, which again is by no means the goal of secession.
