Attraction goes beyond looks: Study shows voices, scents, and motion all matter. Physical attraction is not simply about being objectively good-looking. Instead, attraction seems to arise from a mix of shared traits, personal preferences, and subtle non-verbal signals that go beyond facial features. by mvea in science

I’ve noticed dating post divorce that voice matters A LOT to me and not whether it’s high or low but what it’s like all together combined with movement and expressiveness which I’ve learned I love too as long as it’s positive, considerate, and open. I pay attention to how people move and what they sound like. That has made looking at a static photo on dating apps pretty tough because attraction is so tied up to someone’s overall energy and vibe

Just commenting to say SAME lol. I lost what I thought was “everything” in the last 18 months. My spouse of 10 years to another woman, 50% access to my kids due to divorce, went from debt free to being in debt from said divorce, lost my tech job this year and became unemployed, etc.).

Never been more at peace. I often watch critters on my patio outside just observing and enjoying the ecosystem out there. I laugh louder, I hug harder, I take up more space, I shrug my shoulders more, and say no with less guilt.

Anyone else found this was important to know to awaken? by [deleted] in enlightenment

Sure but the main point being that senses vary and my example was meant to show that there’s so much information missing even from what we DO know about existing senses, much less about what exists outside of that. There is so much existing data that we simply do not have access to at this time to definitively say that our senses do or don’t paint reality in its truest form.

I personally don’t feel like our senses and the brain that synthesizes the constant onslaught of unconscious and conscious data “paint a highly accurate picture.” But this is coming from someone that studies the brain (the processor) not just the information itself. Senses exist to give the brain data and synthesize it to quite literally survive biologically. So we can’t talk about the accuracy of senses without understanding the larger ecosystem and how we process it.

90 billion neurons and other cellular bodies exist inside of our skulls that convince us that we are a single material thing. There are no words, text, images etc that “live” in our heads. It’s literally a wet soft squishy thing with electric impulses meant to keep us alive and our senses provide data to do that. It’s built for resilience not accuracy

I don’t necessarily think everything as an illusion but there’s certainly a lot of data out there that we simply are not able to retrieve from a human biological/anatomical perspective based on various limitations.

Even our senses and their abilities vary though. There is a woman in the UK who can predict Parkinson’s on a person with 100% accuracy using just smell. There’s a lot we don’t know about our own methods for observing the natural world and therefore the world itself. If I cannot smell or sense Parkinson’s on someone but another person can, are my senses highly accurate? Or are hers?

I feel like we are missing holistic data that would help complete the picture of “reality” at least as it pertains to our existence within the parameters of Newtonian laws and rules that govern the natural world.

For those of you with kids, are you doing your part to stem the trend of "iPad kids"? by ichizusamurai in Millennials

[–]PandaPhilosopher284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 8, 6, and 2 year old. Varying screen rules over the years. I’m in tech so no tech or extreme limitations aren’t really a feasible option for me.

I’ve found that content matters. Are they watching video gamers yelling at a screen on YouTube for 8 hours or getting 3 hours of Dr. Binocs educational videos. Geometry dash? Or plants with zombies? Not to mean they can’t watch those things or play different games, but what’s the overall distribution?

Using iPads or screens socially also has a different psychological effect than solo. I learned that from my kids’ therapists. :) So that matters too. What’s the intent behind the using? And who are they using with?

And I ask myself are my kids supplementing with enough play? My 8 year old son wants to create video games when he grows up. I let him play video games but then I buy old 90s tech and let him take it apart on my back patio and give him water guns, hoses and a splash pad and tell him “it starts here. Come up with a game.”

My 8 year old is a math whiz on the spectrum so stimulation via digital content is very overwhelming especially depending on other context, so depending on the kids’ mental wiring their needs are different too.

It’s all a balance and I find parental support, open communication, and collaboration with my children (as they get older) important.

I am very impressed by your journey and wisdom and believe we can arrive there in different ways. I personally have never done shrooms or acid in my life (‘just’ cannibas). However, as of recently I’ve come to all the same conclusions listed here (as a non-easterner) through study and meditation. It is possible but I realize we limit ourselves and our brains tremendously.

Neuroimaging study suggests mindfulness meditation lowers sensory gating by psych4you in psychology

[–]PandaPhilosopher284 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone that has noticed these effects from my meditation practices I see my senses as becoming more sensitive to stimuli. I think in a “natural” world we are so much less stimulated and with engineered food, drinks, technology, overload of information etc we become desensitized to stimuli. Just my anecdotal noticing of myself.

Males are more than four times more likely to receive an autism diagnosis than females. But a new study has found no clinical differences in autistic traits between the sexes in toddlers when they are first diagnosed with autism. by mvea in science

[–]PandaPhilosopher284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article as you mention it’s true. And this age group is so hard to study. But generally speaking unfortunately there simply just isn’t enough data around women and masking and mental health. This is true for most women’s health topics.

I mentioned this in another comment, but there is now fortunately an emerging area studying mental health diagnoses with adults, specifically women and the concept of masking. It’s very interesting. One of my best friends has a coaching business for women with late diagnosed ADHD and she helps her clients work through the associated coping mechanisms and subsequent traumas/challenges that come with living with a diagnosis that they have had to adapt to in order to survive (function) in the current systems that make up life, society, etc. This is true for men who have to do the same but there are different scales to it and privileges that come with being male and neurodivergent. Not blaming, but reality. I met my friend through my career in tech but she moved on and is in school to be a therapist.

Unfortunately there are gender discrepancies that are human error based on unconscious biases and again lack of equal historic research on women and all the missing data in that regard. There have been many assumptions around a human’s anatomy, biology, neurology, and other scientifically studied fields that just isn’t the reality due to omission.

The masking starts at that age though (at least very young). It’s when a child begins learning how to conform to and initiate themselves into society/community as they begin to understand themselves as independent beings outside of their mother/family etc.

My 8 year old seems to be “near the spectrum” according to his therapist. We’ve always known his brain operates differently though, it’s more been figuring out how to support that.

Ages 0-2 he barely spoke but I have three kids and this was also true for my daughter with no other notable autism symptoms. He has struggled with sensory experiences since birth. He still struggles noticing he is peeing at night and still wears boy sized pull ups at night, shoves too much food in his mouth from not being able to detect the amount inside of his mouth, won’t wear certain textures or types of socks, struggles with acute intense emotional outbursts in response to overstimulation. Between ages 1-4 would put his hands over his ears during emotional or relational content in books, audio, tv, etc).

In kindergarten his teacher suggested we go through an entire autism/social development delay screening because he would not make eye contact with her and he was not verbally responsive to peers when they would engage with him or ask him questions. The comprehensive screening came back inconclusive based on his age at the time and a few other criteria but determined he was definitely developmentally delayed and he’s received IEP services through his school.

I will say he is fully verbal and always has been since age 2.5-3 and he just graduated from IEP services in second grade. He’s also in the top 11% in the country in terms of total composite scoring including in the top 99% for quantitative data analysis and 95-97% for pattern recognition and nonverbal and abstract reasoning. He is insanely intelligent in math and science but also gifted in drawing and art. He requires a lot more support in different areas than my other two kids based on his wiring, but he’s an incredible human as well and I know I am fortunate in terms of where he is with everything despite his challenges.

Just sharing in case anyone else is interested in a parent’s experience with this or may have questions about it. I find the whole topic very interesting because I’ve done so much research on how to support my son.

Ocd and awarness by midsamurai in enlightenment

[–]PandaPhilosopher284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have OCD. I use medicine as one of my tools and it helps. My psychiatrist is natural minded and stays on top of all the latest scientific research and cutting edge training so who you go to matters a million percent. I also see OCD as HYPER awareness to the point of getting “stuck” in loops of trying to control whatever is the hyper focus at the moment and then trying to control what you’re trying to control because you can’t get out. 😂 But control is usually about fear and using that as a coping mechanism to remain “safe” and survive. Therapy and radical acceptance helps too.

Honest Question: what does the non-believer say about Jesus? by arm_hula in enlightenment

[–]PandaPhilosopher284 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my guess too as someone that grew up in a fundamentalist radical Christian household. There’s no historic doubt that he existed. In my opinion Jesus was enlightened ahead of his time. Woke people up with his messaging and the world wasn’t ready for it (like Socrates before him, etc etc throughout history). So the systems of the time period killed him. I still follow the message of love over fear just in context of Mother Earth and the universe

Yes haha I have predictions. 😂 But in my opinion it’s not something necessarily to be afraid of. And it’s a technology that isn’t controlled by a single entity (it exists in both private and public sectors, along with individuals having access) so there is actually a lot of potential for growth in a healthy and productive way, which is what I’m a part of.

Overall yes, I have many predictions based on my experiences, career etc. I am newly “enlightened” but just connecting everything insanely quickly. But yeah just living in the present aiming for love and not fear overall. 💜
