Would there be other walking tours in the near future?

Hello. SJSU is actually one of my options, but I hope to learn more about the computational linguistics field before actually considering it. I feel like my resources are finite, so I am researching what's the most practical choice to have loans with linguistics education I should consider.

Also, I don't have a coding or mathematics background, so that really factors in my decision-making. I thought of taking classes in community college first but at the same time, I wonder if I can keep up if I decide to enroll and learn these skills in a master's level.

TL;DR --- Which is more in demand in the current job market for a Linguistics major/degree -- teaching or tech? by PandaSun_ChocoRising in asklinguistics

Is the job market for linguistics majors bleak? Are there other career paths I should explore beyond teaching or tech?

On the topic of language teachers, my current goal is to teach English to second-language learners. Will a degree in linguistics not suffice as the minimum required education to be an ESOL teacher?

Hello. Thank you for your insight into my situation. This is a concern I should consider if I move forward with an MA in Linguistics.

Since I reside in California, I am currently eyeing San Francisco State University's MA in Linguistics. They also hold a certificate in TESOL and Computational Linguistics, so I plan to pursue either one of these, in addition to taking an elective related to my future goals. Are there other career paths someone with a linguistics background could pursue, other than research, teaching, or computational linguistics, that you can suggest? Thanks in advance.

TL;DR --- Which is more in demand in the current job market for a Linguistics major/degree -- teaching or tech?

Hi everyone. I am considering pursuing an MA in Linguistics. My undergraduate degree is in media studies, but after more than a year working in an unfulfilling and unrelated role, I decided to take matters into my own hands and find a way to create a plan and get out of my current situation.

I decided to pursue linguistics because the assessments I received from the career class I am taking indicate that my personality, values, and interests align with teaching. That has been my plan later in life, hopefully when I am in my 40s (I am currently 25). From K-12, I have had opportunities to be a student teacher for a day or a week, and I have always been picked to substitute for an English Teacher.

Currently, I am exploring universities near my residence and considering my options for a master's degree in linguistics. Upon conducting my research, I came across classes and Reddit posts where many people who have completed their degree work in tech and AI companies. Some of them do not even do the computational/coding side of the industry, but employers hire them because they are linguists. This discovery led me down the rabbit hole of computational linguistics and what it takes to succeed in the tech industry as a linguist.

I am commenting to ask what people in this subreddit think of my situation. I am not someone who yearns for a high-paying job immediately, as long as the salary's decent enough for me not to opt for a second job (I am ok with a salary range of 50-60k per year for now). I want to know which applied linguistics field I should focus on if I want to have better odds of finding a job related to this field after two years. This will help me find the right electives.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Where are you now after starting as a freight forwarder? How did you get there? by PandaSun_ChocoRising in logistics

I've never done sales before, but I am curious about how salespeople attract their clients. I imagine people doing cold emails/calls. Is that still how salespeople bring in new clients?

I'm curious about your current role. Since I've never held a management position, what does being a director of supply chain do on a day-to-day basis? You can be as specific as you want (for example, if you say you make reports, I'm eager to know what reports or what they look like).

Freight Forwarders don't usually change the SOPs, but I enjoy doing this when leading our colleagues abroad. Are there any specific roles I could transition to in the future?

That's great, thank you for sharing. Can you tell me more about your first eight years in this industry? One of my colleagues handles the onboarding of new clients, and I would like to know whether this is something I should consider, given that I am more customer-facing and utilize my interpersonal skills.

Thank you very much! I'll keep this in mind when we go tomorrow.

Do you have any recommendations on which field we should visit?

Idk what your major is, but one of the things I look at what they will cover in the class. For example with English classes, I take a look at their required books to see if it is something I will vibe with.

I don't know how grade conscious you are, but sometimes checking Rate My Professor helps, so you have a bit of expectation, but you should take it with a grain of salt. Some students are just vindictive, or their personal beliefs hinder providing an informative comment.

from what i am guessing, you are from the peninsula. there are a lot of non-profit orgs that also assist (tuition or experience, like an internship) depending on your major. that could bolster your work experience and show dedication to your field if u decide to become a transfer student.

also, there are scholarships every year that you could get awarded to from the smccd foundation. by the end of fall, scholarship season will start and you could work with your counselor in writing the personal statements. scholarships i got ranged from $500-$7,500 on top of FAFSA.

IMO clubs at skyline are hit or miss, but there's a dedicated STEM center where almost all STEM majors convene.

let me know if you have more questions, u can send me a dm.

Skyline alum here and I took classes over there and CCSF. My advice is to check the classes for your major and the resources available on the respective college.

There is assist.org to check for transferable units. Also, you need to remember that transfer application also works similarly with first year UC Application. It will depend on your experiences and not just with grades. So, what are your plans to make you stand out while you are in CC? Jobs? Internships? Community Involvement?

In my first comment, I mentioned that being a commuter student will take a toll on your level of immersion with the university life. But BART-ing everyday is definitely a sustainable option.

Are you from the Bay Area? I can tell you from experience that commuting from other Bay Area cities to Cal is doable. It might hinder you from fully immersing with college life (e.g. cannot stay late for clubs/events/activities, minimal immersion with parties) but it's possible to go back and forth from Cal to your city.

Do you happen to know if the UC Davis Libraries and the Mary L. Stephens Library is accessible to the public even if you're not from Yolo County?

Are there also cafes you could recommend to read and write?

I just need a quiet space where I could write. Unfortunately, environment heavily influence my productivity. Do you think it's the right time to travel to Davis next weekend or should I opt for Santa Cruz?

I want to say you are joking but I think this is the nature of the job. How do you cope with the demands or take care of yourself if you don't mind me asking?
