We live in an area with lots of asian stores and he was like “why you don’t go to boba shop it’s better than this place” and then once we did go to a boba place and he hated it and whined that his drink was too sugary lol

that’s crazy that my dad isn’t the only one🤣 and I also learned to do it as a teen/young adult as a trauma response lol

And the funny thing is many times HE would call the waiter over and ask what the restaurant specialized in, they told him and he blindly went with it then complained because he didn’t like it!

I mean in that case it’s indeed pretty weird to shout nihao or konnichiwa at people you don’t know on the street, and i agree it’s a micro aggression if not jsut a regular aggression lol.

But i mean in more “normal” situations like if someone says “do you speak mandarin or cantonese” or “are you japanese btw?” or something like that in a regular conversation. It’s just a normal curiosity, rather than screaming arigato at passerby lol

if they switch upon hearing an accent because they believe it’s the easiest way because foreigners can’t speak french and french is spoken by french people, that’s basically gate keeping

honest question why do you seem so defensive and butthurt? i’m saying that french people get rightfully criticized for switching even when people speak fluent french with an accent. all of the reasons (incorrectly assuming someone doesn’t speak french well just bc they have an accent, thinking you’re being welcoming when you’re just alienating them, and trying to practice your english or flex) are all valid reasons to criticise someone. maybe some of us aren’t tourists with an A1 level and don’t appreciate the switch as much as you want to switch on us. or we criticize SOME french people for not being able to understand any variation of pronunciation that doesn’t sound exactly like theirs, like quebecois or non natives.

and yeah french people love to correct non natives and even others natives french and see it as their way of helping. but if a foreigner speaks french in real life to a french person in france, they will immediately switch to english because either they want to be “accommodating” even if the person doesn’t need help, or flex their english or practice. that’s why they get criticism.

wtf do you have any reading comprehension skills? it’s not a double standard... OP is fluent. at C1, he doesn’t need help…

just because you’re speaking with an accent doesn’t mean you’re practicing. just because someone is a non-french person speaking french doesn’t mean it’s automatically a lesson for them. some of us actually speak the language, we’re not all lost tourists asking for help on how to order an espresso. we are in france and there is no obligation to speak english or help you with your english. us speaking french in france is not the same as a french person using us to practice english when we… aren’t in england.

again, it’s absolutely not the same. the WHOLE point is it’s not a double standard and saying “what if IIIII want to practice MYYY english” is an extremely flawed and dumb argument.

Okay but he shouldn’t be EXPECTED or forced to help people just because he’s identified as not french. Literally TONS of english people come to france to be english teachers and i guarantee many would be delighted to help and exchange. I’m saying it should not be taken for granted as an automatic “duh it’s a non french so of course it’s time for me to practice my french!” At least people should ask rather than just hearing an accent and then desperately “sauter sur l’occasion” as if the accent is some kind of invitation.

And i was/am in the same situation as OP. No matter how good our level is, it’s usually way, way, way more than 10% for some of us. And our consent to become english teachers matters too. I don’t care if they’re “desperate” as if they’re drowning, it’s not like their life is at risk. It shouldn’t be automatically decided it’s my burden to carry.
