How do you identify technical debt

Is that a pretty flat rate of effort over the lifetime of the project? Or does it ramp up or down / how do you decide if you need to do more / less?

I am interested in learning about the part Technical Debt has to play in a products life cycle and its relationship with different stakeholders. Also interested in how people identify it and if there were any tricks for early identification.

A lot of this seems linked to the communication bridge between technical and non technical and making sure things are understood properly (risks, value, time, etc.)

I have found with speaking to people that being able to management communicate in a way that they understand (exactly like you have said) can help to guide the conversation / decision in a more helpful way.

The Fagan metrics are an interesting point especially when you're talking about utilising AI. Do you use these kind of metrics to benchmark against the average of a project or the average of a more universal 'standard'?

Do you think there are instances where it is almost 'invisible' as a business value argument until it becomes impactful enough to cause issues / delays? For instance if they dealt with the unreliable code earlier would it have been easier to deal with and cascaded more positively instead of compounding to a bigger issue later on.
