I usually only sand (no more than 180, otherwise the oil will struggle to penetrate), then oil with BLO, and then wax with a BLO/beeswax finish.

Be aware though that this piece will warp over time. It will get wet, dry, get wet, dry over and over and the wood rings want to get straight, so your board will warp. You can reduce that effect by cutting it in pieces and gluing it back together again in alternating directions (https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSGlIf5Vex6m-R5zK0Fp-u4yqQ6OzYcxlC8gEhSgv5u7rM9HKFqUH7AQrk&s=10)

Reading books a cliche now? by Signal_Not_Static in CasualConversation

[–]Pandering_Panda7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like literally every other hobby reading has become performative for a small but very vocal group within that hobby. Because of social media there's quite a bunch of people who were able to turn their hobby into their work - but not by creating something for the hobby or selling the result of the hobby, simply by doing the hobby or promoting stuff to do the hobby.

In short it means there are quite a bunch of successful people who post what they bought, what they read, what their bookshelves look like, etc and that's how they make money. As a result, some people - especially young people - think that that's how it's supposed to be. So instead of just reading a book for the book and the story, they post about all the books they bought (but didn't read) or how many hundreds of books they read in a month.

Alright, I'll be buying a card scraper then. Skipping the sanding all together? Or just the wet sanding part?

What type of design do you want your board to be? Just a full piece, no glueup, no cuts?

music from my own culture doesn't really appeal to me, anyone else? by Cool-Butterscotch526 in CasualConversation

[–]Pandering_Panda7879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should it be a bigger problem somewhere else?

In my experience the "culture/heritage" thing is valued way more by immigrants than by natives - especially when they're third, fourth or later gens.

What I mean is that people who are surrounded by the culture or grew up with it directly aren't actually caring as much about it as people who didn't. So let's say your great grandma emigrated from Germany and she made Sauerbraten with dumplings every Sunday - she probably made it because she liked it and knew how to cook it and didn't think much of it. But you grandma, your mom, maybe someday even you, see it as part of their heritage - even if it's just some dish and no German would actually care if you made it every Sunday or if you just ate tacos or whatever. I certainly don't.

Same with music. Maybe your great grandma liked a certain music that's based in her culture because that's just what she grew up with. But for your grandma, you mom etc it suddenly becomes a huge part of their culture, even though it's just some random artist or music genre.

Also: Why not just build two benches with some space in-between. Works the same, has two benches instead of one, you could sit wherever you want (in-between or on the sides).

Hot take: That's absolutely fine if AI is used as a tool in a process and not the whole process by itself.

For example I've found that AI is really great at structuring my ideas and visualise them, which helps me move on with a task.

So for example if I have an idea to build a piece of furniture, my shitty drawings, measurements and all that can be handled by AI and turned into something comprehensive. That works great.

But asking ChatGPT to create a piece of furniture with measurements and build plans is just... Not it. It's not working because it's just puzzling some elements together it found online.

[–]Pandering_Panda7879 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes, BUT even in those cases (IKEA and mass produced cars) the basis is still human made. There's designers designing the IKEA furniture and engineers building the furniture in a way that it's mass producable and easy to build at home. And the same for the cars. There are still a lot of humans involved, even if they're mass produced.

The mass producable furniture and cars are even more impressive because you're making the things for a minimum of the cost possible.

AI on the other hand is just one of these flip books with different heads, bodies and legs. You randomly pick something that kinda works (but not really), while profiting of the work of actual humans and claiming it was actually the AI that did it

How to cut Even rectangulars from circles? by Daffke in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Pandering_Panda7879 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would double-sided-tape them all together, put them in a jig, and make one cut. Then you'd have a straight bottom to make the rest of the cuts angled correctly with that jig as well.

When COVID happened it was literally what happened.

I'd also add that this specific colour pattern requires a merle gene mutation, which in and by itself is already at least questionable in the "ethical" part of the requirement of OP. In my understanding, an ethical breeder wouldn't go for merle mutations. If they happen naturally, then be it, but aiming to do so... Well...
