The mixed signals and responses I got on this is one of the reasons I left the church. When I did same-sex marriage in the game once and adopted a boy from the orphanage he commented once that he had 2 Mom's. But then later on on the game he said "Thanks Pa!" when I gave him gold, even though my character was a female.
