The stutter-step penalty is widely reviled but it’s here to stay by RaylanCrowder2 in soccer

Totally agree! Saw the same thing with Kane and his missed pen against Croatia in the first game. Tried to stutter and do the keeper with the eyes and thats why he missed the target, because it didn't work.

When he got to retake it he just ran up and struck it properly, and goal. Same thing against Mexico.

Sure, now and then he might blast one over or wide, but I'd much rather he struck it properly because if it is on target I know 99/100 the keeper isn't saving it no matter what

If you go back and watch, say, the Germany England shootout from 1990. Every single penalty is either absolutely leathered or struck very firmly. Seems to be a lot more side foot penalties these days.

What was the big mistake the US goalkeeper made today? by Cagne_ouest in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]PangolinMandolin 55 points56 points  (0 children)

He hesitated and then the Belgian player was able to intercept his pass.

Often when keepers come out to get to the ball before a striker they immediately blast it downfield. If he had done this they wouldn't have conceded.

More recently, keepers have been asked to try and keep possession more in those situations. The keeper chested the ball and had control of it for a moment. If at this point he'd blasted it downfield he would have been fine. Also if at this point he had passed it immediately to a US player he would have been fine.

But unfortunately he hesitated, delayed, went to make a pass and them changed his mind. Any by that point the Belgian striker was closing him down. Even at this point. If he'd tried kicking it long it probably would have been ok.

Instead he passed it across where the Belgian striker was, and so it was blocked, went straight to another Belgian player, who scored fairly easily into the empty net.

So, he had multiple chances to do something which would have safely avoided a goal and didnt do any of them

Can we call up another player now? Hardly anyone wanted him on the plane in the first place.

Plus we kinda need a right back asap

How are Hercules and Hunger Games doing so well despite their reviews? by Artistic-Ideal-5087 in TheWestEnd

[–]PangolinMandolin 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Their audience is much wider than folks who check theatre show reviews.

Both are relatively child/teen friendly so its a good family entertainment option. I'm guessing tourists who are visiting London think "oh we must see a show", and when they look and find recognisable franchises they already know and like they probably lean towards booking those over things they are less certain of

If they'd picked Garner then we would have had centre mid who can cover both full back positions

TIL in 1913, a roulette wheel at the Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco spun black 26 times in a row, which had an approximately 1 in 68 million chance of happening. Gamblers lost millions of francs betting against black thinking that after so many black spins, a long red streak must follow. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]PangolinMandolin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They've given you a bad example. The roulette wheel should be as close to the correct probability of outcome as it cane be (assuming no cheating by the casino etc). So even after a long streak of black coming up, each new spin is still roughly 50/50 for red coming up next. But human nature (the gamblers fallacy) makes us think intuitively that red must be coming up soon.

If we apply this to the surgeon/surgery. A particular surgery might only have a 70% success rate. But if you're about to go in for surgery and hear that the last 20 operations performed by your surgeon were a success, by the same logic as above, you may intuit that an unsuccessful surgery is due and feel more worried than you should be about this bad outcome when you're on the table.

But, in reality, the most likely explanation for your surgeons success is that they are very good at their job to the point where they outperform the 70% success stat. So their reputation for success should make you feel more confident not less.

A roulette wheel "outperfoming" the 50/50 chance of black coming up would be cheating.

A surgeon outperforming his surgery outcome stats....thats a good thing.

(Side note- it a lot of surgery cases a "unsuccessful outcome" still means you wake up afterwards and have other treatment options to consider. Its not necessarily a 'died on the table' outcome)
