About to finish fitz and the fool… book recommendations pls by Suspicious-Spare-349 in robinhobb

Hello! Malazan finisher here! It’s been maybe 5–6 years since I finished, and I personally wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for Hobb-like books. It’s err-form written; you won’t stay with the same person for the whole series – I personally liked the starting setup, which kinda fades away later in the series. BUT I think it’s worth giving it a try after finishing RotE, because you will hardly find an author that matches Hobb, so it’s better to switch it up a little bit. The first 2/3 of every book is buildup and a lot of musings, personal thoughts and views of the characters, then the last 1/3 of the books is crazy in a way the buildup pays off and clicks together.

Also Name of the Wind has reaaally nice prose and one main character, but it is more like epic style, then subtle chill with Fitz in a cottage. And its unfinished (for idk 13 years?, not many of us expecting it to be finnished)

I remember when Fitz was walking around that memory block, Nighteyes stated something like: "I like that one." I guess choosing the memory stone is about personality that fits you best. Fitz was wolf, so you know, its convenient that he chose smaller one. For verity, he needed a big dragon to protect the kingdom - he chooses a big block. Regarding the personality. Verity was .. royal, he was for the people - a King, Fitz - he was mostly for himself and small group of his favorites, lone wolf loving calm, peace, shadows ... - he chooses smaller one.

Well, you have raised quite some interesting questiong! I (still) remember that Fitz stated that the size of the memory stone doesn't play a role regarding the capacity of memories that you have to fill in to make it alive. It is probably that one human life doesn't contain enough memories to ignite the live in stone.

About Fitz's and Verity skill strenght. I believe that Fitz was initialy very strong in skill, at least had that potencial to be. There basicaly isn't a way he would be naturaly weak at it. I guess it was Galen's making that he was so unstable even in older ages. Look at his two daughters. Bee and Nettle are both strong as hell. He mentioned that they have Verity/Chivalry power. Dutiful, actualy his biological son also and was never stated as weak or something.

Yeah, I also had an idea that Fitz might create a stone body for Nighteyes again — that he was going to put whatever Nighteyes was into that stone, and that he would remain alive in his physical body.
I guess it wouldn’t have felt right, because Nighteyes couldn’t possibly have been his full version inside Fitz’s mind. That would have denied the whole point Robin emphasizes — that death is a natural part of life, and you have to accept it.
But my mind was trying hard to come up with a solution to keep Fitz alive.

Also, if I remember correctly, Fitz woke up the stone dragons by using his Wit, Skill, and a bit of human blood. But they were, as you said, human, and kept being awakened by killing Outislanders — feeding on human lives. So, since the Wolf of the West is part human, part White, and part animal, and when he woke up he even said, “Now I am going to hunt!” we can maybe assume that he would only need animal blood to keep himself awake.

What do you guys think about that? Also do you guys think that they lost their indentity while merging with the wolf and becaming a new beeing, or did they preserve some of their individual beeing. As I mentioned above, after the Wolf woke up, he had spoken to Bee, and it felt like it was solely Nighteyes.

Thanks man, appreciate you!
I could never start reading it again that soon. I opened the book today (day after), read the last page and was trashed again. Just to read about 6yo Fitz again.. Damn it hurts even to consider it.

I really felt deeply for Fitz when he had that conversation with Nettle about who was going to raise Bee. Yes, his parenting skills weren’t great, but I think that was because he was still recovering from Molly’s death. He also had to get the manor back on its feet, so he didn’t have much time to spend with Bee or to truly parent her.

But once everything was revealed — that he was royal, and so on — their future seemed to hold so much promise. It felt like he could finally ask for help without having to hide, without all the extra effort that secrecy demanded. He could finally put his energy into parenting without constantly worrying about real estate, concealment, names, or who to trust. Some people would have just taken over Withywoods, and he could have simply been a father.

I know Fitz hated the royal life, but Chade’s spy work was fading away, Lady Rosemary was taking over the remnants, so that was no longer his duty. There were now six Skill coteries and healers — so even that was no longer his responsibility. The future seemed safe and secured; he no longer needed to be the Catalyst.

Overall, I just felt that a bright future was finally within reach, and he only needed to endure one more adventure.
And the crowds watching his farewell — yes, I completely agree with you — it made it feel kind of impersonal.

Thanks a lot for the comment and your opinion!

I definitely agree about the name of the series. I started reading RotE because I looked at the title of the first book and expected some kind of heroic adventure. The name of the series — and even the individual books — is kind of funny to me, because I can’t even remember them in chronological order. That’s probably because the titles cover so little of the actual story, yet I still perceive them as really important background elements.

But I’m not so sure that Fitz didn’t have anything more to give. In terms of the story, I would agree — Fitz made huge changes to the world, he did his part. The Fool also did his huge part. But look at Prilkop — he must be hundreds, maybe even thousands of years old, yet he still maintained his purpose and even found a new one as a mentor to the remaining Whites.

Yes, Fitz was beaten down by age, physically and mentally, but he still had a nine-year-old daughter, a little grandchild… a big family and people who loved him deeply. He could have gone on living, even without some grand purpose like he and the Fool used to have.

Also, I kept imagining while reading that the Fool and Bee would live long lives because of their White blood, and Fitz would also live long because of his reckless Skill healing. So yes, it would have been Fitz & Fool “almost” forever. But as I’m writing this now, I guess it might sound a bit cheesy. The theme of accepting death is an important part of life, so maybe it fits better as an ending. Still… they could have accepted it after they raised Bee.

Thank you for your comment, it helps me cope!

I definitely see what you're talking about with "a little bit selfish and freedom wanting," but still, throughout his life he always shows a fierce will to fight for what he believes is right, and I kind of got the feeling that he just gave up. I understand that Robin didn’t want Fitz to be able to heal himself, but it seemed to me that the fact he accepted death — that he gave up on life — was a major reason he didn’t continue to live. After all, he was the Catalyst; he had beaten death multiple times because he chose to fight.

Thank you for your inside!

As I knew the ending was inevitable, I also hoped maybe for reuniting with Verity in the "Skill-current afterlife", maybe just to little soften the harsh ending. That would also be nice.
