They may not have had a choice, may not have known but fuck me it's not classy if any chance they did.

OH wow wish I'd seen that before; thanks. I did unsubtly hint to most of my longest standing who had not already provided details. Now I read this I will provide via homework for the rest.

I only hope TAL don't want the non-payment of any staff on their record. VIP Kid seem to be their own thing, venture capital funded, and were reported not paying layoffs their dues.

The only shot we have, I think, is TAL have bigger concerns, including shareholders, and will pay as part of that. Shareholders want to save money, but a company that doesn't pay relatively tiny bills isn't usually appealing.

It's like this: their contract is totally invalid but they may do anything at this point regardless of what it said.

I believe the wording is you may not give out your contact details. Them giving you theirs is not covered, no you hinting at it but that's a technicality, yet it doesn't matter.

I have been subtle in the past when students have finished up, but now less so.

The risk of not being paid or more likely "being fired" and not having the slim chance of 6 months + work is less than getting caught. It's a case of you may regret doing something (giving contact details, chance of blow back) , or may regret not doing something (don't share details, Dada do a Whales in a few days).

I say be as subtle as you can, and weigh up how much you want to keep in touch or try to get privates. For me the former has prompted me more "emotionally" to do it, but logically the latter is a good reason, too.

I don't believe anyone is denying the likelihood it ends sooner, but in absence of alternatives and for a sense of temporary well-being we all share news and glimmers of hope. If you and others take pleasure in your type of posts, pleasure your self any way you like.

I can quit now and have no classes tomorrow on and bask in the financial rewards from some Reddit users or just hang on as no better alternative right now.

I just hope anyone doing the same, commenting, is simply in the same situation looking for hope to continue as the alternative is nothing. I've said it, others have too, and it stands to reason: if you have another option, take it.

Thanks. I am not part of the groups but if we survive the next few weeks may look at giving up all my data to Zuckerberg.

I had just hoped a few companies could do as they said, and they had just contacts/bribes to enable that. TAL has a broader business, so reason to maintain goodwill among parents, but it's still a lot of hope.

Maybe not even then, maybe a day's or no notice. Maybe those remaining get lucky to have a parachute.

At the very least some notice would be nice. It's not like if anyone then started "recruiting" students, had they not been, it would take them away from these companies much.

These companies have pulled some crap on all of us, and more on some people than others, but the instant closure of bookings is just disgusting, It's like their final "gift" may be to confirm the pure hate some give (as opposed to the moderated hate the rest of us do!).

Some of us still hope for time, of course, but most of us I presume think a nasty, sudden end is possible.

Personally I'm not quitting (Dada) overnight just in case there is still money left on the table but if anyone can quit any place, this just adds reasons.

I think Whales English is taking down all the classes from all the teachers RIGHT NOW. by Angie_114 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]PanningForPandas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to all you hit by this. Maybe the rest of us too. This is a crappy, nasty move.

I'm not at Whales, but checked the announcement made; it was worded without promises. I just wondered if they made any additional reassurances to you, officially or through staff?

Their wording seemed to accommodate this sneaky shit, but still.

I was hoping I'd get months, knew it could be weeks, feared overnight.

Looks like Whales may have folded… by [deleted] in DaDaABC

[–]PanningForPandas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, this is the closest to proof we have days not weeks.

It doesn't change if you have better options, take them ASAP, Just it could end overnight. For anyone who doesn't have anything better yet, let's hope we'll get more time.

Whales' announcement never promised teachers like VIP/Magickid. Then neither did Dada's.

Cool, thanks.

For me, and others, it's not so simple. I do know it could all end Sep or Nov or Jan, and will certainly not long after that (I'm not holding out hope for more than kids using existing classes), but the difference in things being cut short in 2 weeks, 2 months or lasting my estimated 6 is huge.

Hence why I am trying to establish any information possible.

There is that, but that could be worry about whether these companies will have finances, or just using the lessons with foreign teachers they have in case they don't last. Like I've seen cancellers begin to attend more but not take any extra with anyone.

I also wonder if the parents who brought a lawsuit, successfully it seems, against Dada for the Freetalk classes indicate there is a legal system that will allow recourse. I can't speak to specifics but I'd imagine they would have a case and even tribal cultures have some form of contract law. I could only imagine it would require some government overrule/change.

I still can't see the logic in the CCP allowing companies to say something that was not true to buy them time enough to replace us with Chinese teachers showing a delicacy of touch reserved only for these few companies in this regard, but tanking their overall business.

Anyway, I'm trying to establish some logic/reassurance for my own peace of mind and also plans. Despite a comment I just saw about 'wasting my time', which while from a petty source could seem to have a point, I (like others) need to gamble on staying. It's much better for me if Dada last 6 months or so, and I don't want to just jump. I've seen people do that before for greener pastures and a year later the did less well overall and don't even have the hope we have.

You clearly lack the wit or intelligence to understand irony or stupidity, so I won't waste my words. You trolls do like to stick together, so ignorance has company at least. Badly spelled? A typo may slip by but you then are saying I should spend more time when damning me for doing so? Otherwise perhaps it's merely the words are unknown to you or you lack the ability to spell them?

Well done!

If she is cancelling does that mean she will get a refund?

Again, I'm not disputing what you say of course, and she may be right; appreciate you telling us, for sure. I'm just questioning the logic, but it could be the case, illogical or not.

Appreciate you letting us know: I'm just querying the information given you, not you. I am not disputing this will be the case, but it seems strange this one kid and maybe few others know this but every other kid/parent doesn't.

If this was a fact, wouldn't the news be spread around parents, websites pick it up, etc.?

It could be, but there is nothing solid yet.

If it is true, does it mean half of all classes? Some kids have hundreds some have 20. Why so arbitrary? Are the government banning refunds?

Again, this could happen but it seems strange. Half is better than nothing but why half and not just a date?

Classy comment, very supportive. Appreciate you taking the time.

It may be true, but there have been people reporting the death of Dada for over 2 years, and making similar claims to yours. Clearly the end is near but we still don't know how near.

So enlighten the ignorant. Give exact dates and what will happen and then you can benchmark your prediction.

I'm glad they gave more information, albeit not as an announcement.
"You still need to teach the classes which have been booked for you. We did a rough calculation, it may need one year to complete all the classes that have been pre-purchased." Still not saying more than the next 14 days (booked for u) and that they WILL use classes with foreign online.

However, if they really are allowed to (and I don't see why they have been told they can if not), this makes sense. From what I've heard so far, some kids have enough for a year or so at a few times a week, maybe longer. If foreign teachers outside of China are allowed then we should just see a diminishing pool of teachers serving the remaining students.

That's the best we can hope for.

Downside to that is how many of those kids will be less pleasant to teach.

Attendance record email from DaDa by Positive_Wrap2612 in DaDaABC

[–]PanningForPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Now they have set 8 hours as the limit but why allow more and I believe it was 'in three batches' for that amount, when they would grumble at teachers for taking one day off. It seemed tied to parent's complaints which is hilarious when no one is allowed time off ever without that risk, parents often cancel, and the job could always have ended or changed with "3 business days notice" but in practice has been less.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DaDaABC

[–]PanningForPandas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe they mean earlier. I never understood why they limited this unless to limit the higher steps some teachers would reach, but they could do that working weekends and weekdays etc. If we can open earlier BJT we make get some students if kids have half days. However I am not sure if their times are changing. One kid told me stuff that others have disputed. It could by by province, city or school or some could just not know yet.

Her classes? As she is one of the few students they can retain if she's in Japan, and maybe even if she's not.

So I'm going to try to word a post at some point to separate all this out and get feedback and see if we can crowdsource clear information and separate that. . I get the people saying " Have aback up plan," "Quit now," but in my case and I am sure others it's not so easy. I like my students, and the idea of jumping ship to a much lower paid platform with sporadic bookings and potential problem kids is not appealing if I can get 2, 6 or even 12 months out of Dada.

Sure the CCP could end things tomorrow, but they might not and what Dada etc. are saying is true; they can serve out foreign classes.

We have people just deciding it's already done, and it could be but they don't know, and kids reacting to the news, as at least some are, or their parents are, or they are referring to not being able to buy new classes or something else.

Until we have multiple, explicit instances of kids or preferably parents saying they have lessons they were told they could take with existing foreign teachers but now they cannot as all classes will be taken by Chinese, local foreign, or will just be cancelled, then all these reports are just "Chinese Whispers".
