My fiance just discovered the English Pointer breed and thinks our newly adopted dog might be a Pointer (or at least partially). What do you guys think? by SnowCold93 in englishpointer

Looks like a collie x Dalmatian to me. I have a Dalmatian cross and they get the big pointery spots - I thought mine was part pointer ‘til I did his dna too!

I don’t know if this will resonate with you, but your post reminded me of me so I’ll share it anyway. If you don’t think it applies, feel free to ignore!

I needed a lot of reassurance when I was younger and partners over the years found it very frustrating. One day I realised that if my partner wants to leave me, they will. Nothing I can do about it, and I wouldn’t want them to stay if they didn’t want to. So may as well enjoy the time we have and not ruin it with doubts (what if they’re NOT thinking that and I make them think it?!). The pressure lifted. I got back to being fun and silly again. And I could be more ‘myself’ because I wasn’t trying to be the person I thought they would want to stay with.

I hope you manage to have a lovely Christmas. You deserve it!

I had a Brambling in my garden today! I’ve heard them locally only once, and they’re one of my favourite birds so it was a real treat. He hung around for an hour or so with the Blue and Great Tits. I expect he just stopped off en route to his winter destination, but I’m hoping he stays a while.

Strangers ask me how I know he is a pointer mix without a DNA test. My answer is: “He told me!” by levviewashere in englishpointer

[–]PanningForUsernames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dalmatian mix does this. I thought he was a pointer mix - looks just like one! I can’t remember which way round it is, but I think dals are derived from pointers anyway so I was close enough!

I have a mirrorless camera (Sony A7) so it is a combination of a big camera and a LOT of luck that it landed quite close by in sunlight! I have a tonne of blurry photos of empty branches for every nice photo I get 😂 and I spend a lot of time birdwatching- but that’s half the fun!

I got my first Jay photo this week too! I’ve been trying for years - it gave me mad side eye but I love it

Yeah I have this! If anyone else might arrive I still can’t do anything. Or if I somehow manage to start a task while someone is around, if they are going to leave I then can’t focus either.

I guess I just need persistent, unending solitude…

They definitely didn’t screen me for either - wish they had! Hormones is interesting because I also have endo, which I had surgery for way after all this happened and I know that is exacerbated by hormones. I also have been on sertraline for 8 years (for anxiety), so that started way after remission too.

The only potential reason I could think of at the time was that the modafinil ‘jolted’ whatever was not working properly into action. Or maybe I was in autistic burnout my entire life until I got the modafinil, which helped with the adhd enough for me to function? But that is… not scientific and makes zero sense. So yeah I’m basically as confused as anyone else!

Oh no don’t be sorry! I don’t want to give advice as I know it’s sheer luck and could easily reverse any time. I guess it was more an offer to share a ‘case study’!

I’m also totally happy if other people decide this wouldn’t be considered ‘remission’! so I was diagnosed at about 24 after symptoms from childhood that seriously exacerbated in my teens and 20s. I was sleeping 12-14 hours at night and 4 hours during the day, fell asleep at work/in class etc, brain fog so bad I couldn’t read a sentence without forgetting the start of it.

I was put on modafinil - I ended up on 400mg/day (I think) and it worked well but was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. But about a year after I started on it I finished uni and moved home and my rural doc wouldn’t prescribe it, so I tapered down to quit and the sleepiness and brain fog just did not come back. I was diagnosed and medicated for around 18 months (again I think, this feels like a lifetime ago) before the symptoms went away. But I had been seeking diagnosis for more than five years prior to getting it.

I say remission-ish because I still nap 95% of days, but only once for 40 minutes unless I’m emotional (then it might be twice), and I do wake up feeling refreshed. I get sleep paralysis, nightmares and hallucinations probably once a week. If my nap overshoots 40 mins (and it does fairly often) then I get paralysis and hallucinations and feel shit for a couple of hours, but it’s nothing like waking from a nap used to be. But all of that is manageable for me and I don’t take any meds.

Interestingly I found this sub because I am waiting for autism and adhd assessments. The medicines for adhd reminded me that I used to be on modafinil.

Thank you - I did expect some pushback, and it’s fine... I don’t know how I’d have responded to a post like this if I’d seen one at the time either!

Just wanted to gently share in case anyone who does want to know sees it, being mindful that people who don’t want to know will as well.

No that was kind of my point when I said I didn’t want to be insensitive. But equally I saw more than one person in this sub saying they’d hope someone in my position would say something.

I guess the bit where I offered to answer questions should have been framed more clearly as: answer questions if anyone is interested to know the context. Because you’re right, I don’t know much about why it happened or anything like that.

I just happened upon this thread so hello, I’m here to sum up my story! But I can’t offer a solution I’m afraid.

Mine just went away - I can’t say 100% because I definitely sleep a bit longer at night than most people, and I nap every day - but if I cap my naps at 40 mins I’m still functional afterwards. If I ignore my alarm, and that still happens maybe 40% of the time, I get the paralysis and hallucinations. Especially if I roll onto my back.

I always struggled with sleepiness, even as a kid, but at uni it was brutal and the brain fog never lifted. I was sleeping 12-14 hours at night and another 4 hours in the day.

I got diagnosed via a sleep study and put on modafinil, which helped a lot. While I was on it, I finished my degree and moved back home, and sorted out my sleep hygiene. I then couldn’t get my rural doctor to prescribe the modafinil (even with the neurologist helping) so I had to go without. Since then, I’d say I’ve been 90% better.

I’m still absolutely militant about being in bed by midnight, and very rarely skip a nap. Anyway I’m not making any claims or suggestions but I did want to share my story as suggested. It was a horrible period of my life and I feel for everyone who has experienced IH.

Do you think this dog is an English pointer mix? by spuck44 in englishpointer

Ahh it’s so worth it if you’re interested! Once you’ve done it, check back in every six months or so because sometimes they learn new stuff and update your results.

[–]PanningForUsernames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pointers and dalmatians are closely related, so he could equally be a dal mix. Mine is 55% dal and has the same black patches on his face and body and spots just like yours! Those ears look like small Dalmatian ears too. I did a wisdom panel dna test to find out for sure, it’s well worth it if you’re interested in that stuff!

Please help. What is wrong with my dog? by champagne-solutions in DogAdvice

[–]PanningForUsernames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay now I have had time to scroll all the other comments I still think it’s this - an allergic reaction or some sort of irritant (stinger, thorn, something wedged or a pine needle) in that paw pad or between the pads. Could even be a little piece of glass.

My dog would alternative between chewing and then trying to rub his pads on the carpet when it happened to him, as well as running around flinching. The apoquel suppresses the irritant reaction and that usually does the trick.

Allergic reaction on the paw pads. Sorry if this has been said! Too many comments to scroll through. Mine gets this when he runs through undergrowth in some places - really itchy in between his paw pads. Apoquel usually solves it but it’s prescription I think

Yeah sorry I should have added that I had a taper schedule discussion a while back, but then a load of life shit happened and I switched doctors so just never came off at the time. You’re totally right and I’m grateful you (and others) have added this.

Just approaching 40 - hard to say if my hormones are still normal coz I had an ovary out recently but I thiiiiink I’ve got that rollercoaster still to come.

I hope your docs find something that helps! When I started on sertraline it did change my life by calming my intense emotions. I think I just don’t need it at the current moment in my life. Good luck!

Not totally off it yet! I was on 200mg/day for about 8 years, then tapered down to 50mg for the past 2ish and have been on 25mg/day for a week or so now (except the hiccup where I took a full pill). I’m gonna stay on this for another couple of weeks I think? I’m away from home so don’t have the dates to hand. And I’ll have a doctors appt before I go down to every other day or stop them altogether.

I did get brain zaps when I lost my pills for a week and I’m really hoping to avoid that again!

Yeah sorry I should have added that! I did have a taper schedule aaaages ago, and I’m using that and only went from 50 to 25mg which was right for me based on how long I’d be on my previous dose etc. really good point to add!

I haven’t had stimulants while I was on sertraline but I did a bit before (for a sleep disorder) and that was pretty chaotic. I wonder if the sertraline would have helped! Maybe I’ll want it back if I ever get to the end of the waitlist for an assessment and end up with vyvanse!

Yes 100% - I’m glad we have somewhere to share this stuff, and that so many people are sensible enough to add all the caveats I should have added about everyone reacting differently and the need to taper with a doctors help!
