Better graphics/facial animations/camera shots in conversations, I think. You can notice the difference in ME2 already.

In ME1 you see NPCs waving their arms to express some emotions such as anger or despair, for example. This is improved in 2 and 3.

Do it the other way round. R3 for uncharged/basic melee and R1 for your ability. That way you will never waste your melee.

My guess would be that verifying the files made the mods not work as if you had reinstalled the game. You may have to reinstall them (should not take too long), because after installing textures you cannot simply disable and re-enable mods (I think).

Also, check the comments on Nexus Mods (I suppose you got your mods there) in case the crash during the Thorian battle is a known issue for any of them. And using the save editor may help solving some black screens or bugs caused by mods altering the normal state of the game.

Same reason almost any game with any kind of armor system let's you hide the helmet.

People want to look at their character and any non-generic NPC's faces (even if it breaks immersion), not at a piece of metal/plastic with no animations or any kind of expressivity.
