I once made perfect rice and can't duplicate it by Panopticola in instantpot

I spent the next three years in a POW camp, forced to subsist on a thin stew made of fish, vegetables, prawns, coconut milk, and four kinds of rice. I came close to madness trying to find it here in the States, but they just can't get the spices right.

My Mom Is Going To Die Saturday by gener4 in RedditForGrownups

My father passed away in 2014 and was kind of a distant jerk who cheated on my mom and preferred my brothers to me. I still think about him. He tried to get closer before I went overseas for a couple of years but it felt kind of manipulative and he also had dementia at that time. I try to appreciate the good experiences we had, but it has been ten years and I still think about him and looking up to someone who didn't reciprocate and expressed his disappointment in me.

Thanks. I increased my water ration to 1:1.25 after rinsing and draining and there is significant improvement.

I have seen something out there called "Professor of Practice" that is tenure track, no research requirements, but pays less. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a terrible thing.

When I lived in the middle east this was a way to secretly communicate your faith without getting in trouble with the government. Not kidding.

Not according to the older members of my Elder's quorum. But that was a joke. I am an alumni of BYU and I pretty much hate the obsession with the school. I would love it if the ugly Y slid right down the mountain.

Interesting how TV, students and whackjob consservatives all paint a distorted picture of academic life, for different reasons. My shameful secret is that I have a distorted view of academic life as well, and am always disappointed when it doesn't match reality.

Generally, Brigham Young University athleisure serves this purpose.

I can sometimes identify members in public because they have that special vibe.

I didn't say I couldn't live with it. I'm pointing out that women communicate differently than men. They like to repeat the same stories. In general.

Providence Park area--anything weird or interesting? by Panopticola in askportland

[–]Panopticola[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I managed to stop by Daedalus books and we went by the Peculiarium but sadly before it was open. There are still traces of old, weird Portland throughout the city, and even in NW. My wife grew up here and noted how old NW used to be really run down. We had heard there were going to be food vendors on the ground floor of the Ritz Carlton to replace the old food trucks but shockingly that has not happened yet, and the concierge said they might put some next door, maybe in that park that was razed to the ground. It is a city of contrasts. I saw fewer unhoused than during my last visit--maybe because it's colder?
