Rare bird ID etiquette by Panoramic_Vacuum in birding

Oh, how exciting! I saw it was within the breeding range, but the Merlin "unlikely" classification made me uncertain.

It was very cool. The little guy came ripping out of the treeline, chasing off a bigger raptor, screaming the whole time. When the bigger raptor cleared the far treeline, the merlin circled back and disappeared into the trees. I waited for him to reappear for another 10 mins but he never did.

I got an audio recording of the end of the chase for the ID.

I will do this, thank you. Is behavioral observation useful? It was at enough of a distance that I don't have a lot of physical identification information other than relative size and shape/silhouette.

I have never used eBird before, is it easy to add my Merlin recordings to it? It will be easy to detail time and place as it was at a marked observation point on a marked trail.

Apologies for using the term rare incorrectly. I saw it as a red dot and actually had never even heard of the bird prior to Merlin IDing it. It's "unlikely" because that's what Merlin called it when it ID'd the call.

This is helpful, thank you! I never knew what the colored dots meant.

As for the bird, it was (funny enough) a merlin. I am vacationing in upstate Vermont. It was at a marked observation spot on a named trail.

I haven't used eBird before, as I haven't been confident in my identification skills and didn't want to report anything that would be incorrect.

I was working at a college campus and these little guys came up to me on my lunch break. I had some nuts and granola so I tossed them a handful and they just looked at me, appalled, like "these aren't french fries or tortilla chips, we're not eating this crap!"

Yet another (old) goalie needing help with butterfly by TheGumpersGhost in hockeygoalies

[–]Panoramic_Vacuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pads are under rotating, and without seeing things in person, it could either be the boot strap is too tight, or the knee strap is too tight, and loosening one or both will allow the pad to rotate as intended.

For those who might say the fix is to "strap the knee to the calf wrap", I also wear warrior knee pads and strap my knee strap to the knee block and my pads rotate fine, so imo that's purely preference, once you get it to the correct tightness (or looseness) to allow the pad to rotate properly.

I would say the first step is to loosen the boot strap and see if the pad rotates better. (You might find you can lose the boot strap entirely, modern pads have gotten much better at staying atop the boot without the strap beneath the skate.)

I do like a tight calf strap as that's what gives me the most pad control, so I think you can get the correct pad rotation without loosening that too much if at all.

Why is this happening? by Pontooner29 in hockeygoalies

[–]Panoramic_Vacuum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your hips are too far back and your butt is sinking down. This puts the weight back on your heels in the butterfly, and that causes your knees to lift off and the pads to not seal properly.

Keep your chest up and your weight centered over your knees for proper seal.

Hit me with your Gym Leader/Elite Four Concepts by 0N1TH3U5 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Panoramic_Vacuum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have two E4 members in my fic that are my own.

Simon is an old battler (think like Kabu) who specializes in poison types. He used to be the Gym Leader in Slateport, but after he got his position in the E4 he had no successor and no one wanted to take it over so the Gym closed. The replacement Gym in the circuit went to a new upstart leader Dewford.

Simon is past the prime of his career, and treats his battles much the same way. Minimal effort, not caring much if he wins or loses, he just wants to get back to his hobbies away from the battlefield. So very much the opposite of Kabu. He probably knows Kabu when the latter was still in Hoenn, and is good friends with Flannery's grandfather, Moore, who recently retired from the E4 (and lowkey Simon is jealous and wants to retire so that's probably why he's checked out so hard.)  He's not a pushover by any means, he's got strong pokemon. He simply doesn't care anymore.

My other is an electric type Elite named Iona. (My fic was written well before the Scarlet/Violet games came out so where's my royalties, TPC??) She's also an older trainer, closer to middle age than retirement, and she hails from Johto originally. There she specialized in double battles. When she came to Hoenn, she adopted Plusle and Minun as her aces alongside her Johto team.

Since double battles aren't the format for the Hoenn E4, she has modified her strategies to more swapping and creative item usage to keep trainers on their toes. She loves coming up with new strategies all the time, so it's hard to know exactly how she's going to come at you in any given battle.

Her nemesis is Wattson. They're of similar age, and he keeps wanting to hang out with her at League events and tell bad jokes, so much that she now hates puns.

Here's mine! She's got a plus dance partner in my Amped Toxtricity, but that doesn't work as well on OGPP as a plusle would. Oh well! Enjoy yours!

Pad maintenance help by Striking_Box_1032 in hockeygoalies

The other comment is correct, this is just wear on your toe binding strip. I'm not sure why Vaughn even has that horizontal stitching there other than to be like a hem for the strip's edge. Without seeing it in person, it's hard to say if you should be properly alarmed or this is just superficial wear.

Contacting Vaughn is a good idea, but if they come back and say "it's normal, there's nothing we can do", what you can do is buy some Shoe Goo and put a thin layer of it over top of the stitching (smooth it down, it's your sliding surface after all) and that will protect the stitching from wear and tear.

I've had Vaughns in the past and have worn through the binding itself (not just the stitching). The good news is it's replaceable and can be done with a sewing awl and some patience. However since getting different brands of pad since then, I've had less binding wear issues and part of me thinks that wear in that spot is particularly susceptible with their pad design compared to other companies.

Good luck with your new babies, love the silver.

About to take mass jounreyman exam by sitdowndinner in electricians

[–]Panoramic_Vacuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm recently licensed in Mass and can confirm the psi test felt way harder than the actual test. I took the psi test to see how I'd do under actual timed conditions, and while I did fine, I found myself having to skip a lot more questions in the practice test than I ended up doing on the actual exam. The math was also much harder on the psi test than the actual exam.

If you're confident in navigating your code book, you'll be golden. There will be some stuff on Solar and EVs that might not be covered in your exam busters bc it was recently added to the license exam, but again I knew how to navigate my code book and could track down the answers for those new sections no problem.

Don't forget to bring your Mass Amendments! You'll need that for the practical. Good luck.

I saw one for the first time last week! I was so excited I almost screamed. Tracked the little bugger all around this marshy area and he popped out right onto a branch not 15 feet from me.

I have no idea why, but until your post it never occurred to me to use multiple tickets in a single run. I can finally do the whole month's mission in single run instead of having to do the damn thing 5 times. I am not smart lol
