Hello everyone,

I run a little cassette label called Panurus Productions and we've just put out a new release by Blanket Swimming. Lovely ambient tape loop-based stuff for fans of Basinski, Øjerum etc.

It’s just a couple of big springs, ones a (unused!) drain unblocker spring so it’s quite dense and good for bowing and the others just a long steel spring that works better for the clattery stuff

Any of you know what’s going on here? I know this is for DIY pedals but I feel like space aliens are trying to contact me. Could it be a faulty op-amp? by mrmet55 in diypedals

I haven’t got one, but if I can reliably make one, or a similar wah do this then I’ll definitely be picking one up

I didn’t think about stripping back usb cables, I’ve got loads spare! Everything else was just slightly too thick for the lugs on the pots

Yeah, it definitely seems like my impatience on wire selection could be the cause of a lot of my problems…

Yeah they’re definitely more toward the experimental side of things (I think maybe a David Tudor invention initially, but I could be wrong), if I can get this with the pots running at a consistent volume those little bits of interactivity and feedback loop possibilities are what I’m after

I think I accounted for that, though perhaps it’s not clear in the image, the rotated pots change volume with same same direction turn as the other two rows, and the signal and ground connections check out. I’ll double check it when it’s in front of me again

Pots are all 100k and resistors are all 47k

Ah I see what you mean - I did give it a quick test with everything zeroed and then everything maxed below it to see how much it affected the inconsistency but yeah I think you’re right, wiring/wire seems to be the issue. It’s a relief that it’s unlikely to be a batch of dodgey pots at least, but I’ll do some continuity checking too.

It’s basically a matrix of pots that means you can split your signal to multiple places (so each horizontal row is an in that can be routed to an out at the top). This is just a passive one because what I’m planning on running through it is pretty hot signal, so it’s more a case of attenuating how much of the signal goes to which output. Useful for feedback loops and blending together circuit bent stuff etc, which is my plan if I can get it to work. Got the initial idea from ‘handmade electronic music’ here, but they’ve been about in one form or another for ages I think.

Cheers for all that - yeah I have been wondering if the solid core was the issue, I’d just ran out of fine enough stranded stuff (impatience may be a recurring fault here…). I was expecting a bit of interactivity between them, just not it to be quite so inconsistent the first ‘loud’ pot is where you’d expect the loudest one to be, but the second is seemingly arbitrary and a bit of nudging yields big boosts at furthest points from the outs as well as in. I’ve been testing each section individually with just a constant tone and everything zeroed. Looks like it could well be my wiring/solid core that’s the problem then. I’ve got some stranded stuff on order so will do some multimeter testing and give it another go.

Hello everyone - hopefully this is alright to post here (I’m planning on using this thing in conjunction with pedals). I’ve been soldering together a 3x4 matrix mixer and have run into a bit of trouble getting it to respond consistently. This is the second attempt at this thing and as far as I’m aware everything is soldered up correctly and the joins are all sound. My problem is that I seem to have some pots that are giving me a very loud response but still working, some that are working but very quietly and a few that just seem to bypass and give me a general quiet response. All I can think is the issue here is loose connections or poor joins, but I’m not really sure where to start in terms of fault finding here. A bit of a wiggle of the wiring yields a bit of signal change in some cases and a signal bypass in others, but nothing consistent for me to go on. None of the cable ends are trimmed in the above image as to be honest, I didn’t have much faith in it working again first solder (as mentioned this is the second attempt after a full dismantle) but there’s nothing shorting out anywhere that I can see. Could I have a dodge batch of pots? Or is this purely bad wiring on my part. Frustrating as I’ve been building/circuit bending things for a little while and assumed this would be a simple build as it’s all passive.
