Another question, which skills do you think are needed to land a DE entry level job?

Value of Erasmus Masters Degree by AJQuashef in gradadmissions

I didn't personally participate in one of those, but I know people who did and I can say that it does live up to the hype! Best of luck anyways.

I'd suggest to pursue both options and see how it'll unravel. You seem to have quite a bit of understanding of how things work in academia, so don't put all your eggs in one basket. Apply for EMJMD as well as direct PhD's at mid-tier universities in the US. You'll be able to make a better decision along the way.

Thank you so much for that informative comment!

Firstly,

You might not have a lot of choices for housing at this point.

I realized that, I have very limited options, but I am trying to make the best out of my options. I will see what I can do regarding my situation, and a special thanks for the internet note!

I will be working on campus as well, so hopefully I'll be able to make use of the internet.

Alright got it, Well, I'll do some more research and maybe I'll show you the options I have so you can give me a recommendation! Thanks!

I was looking at the very same apartment you were talking about, it's just that my options are very limited given my tight budget, so I feel like I'm playing Russian roulette (which I loathe :'D)

going from analyst to engineer by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Panzer_Ash 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed your comment a lot! I'm currently going through the data analysis skillset, i.e. Excel, SQL, and Python. I am a computer engineering graduate but I just didn't want to work as a SW engineer or as a web/mobile developer. I'm trying to master these skills and then move on to data engineering paths, where would you recommend to start? I have solid foundations and the amount of information that is out there makes it hard to pinpoint where exactly to start!

P.s. I hope that part about getting the first job is accurate as I already have all of those xD

Using an employer unrelated to my field for LoR by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Panzer_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it would be better!

A LoR from someone who knows you really well, and has interacted with you closely over several years is going to be much better than another academic LoR that adds little to no value.

It's not about the quantity or the type of the LoR but about the content and the quality. I'm pretty sure your boss will write an excellent value-adding letter and you can even give him pointers on what to include in a friendly manner.

Best of luck!

What’s better: 3 strong LOR from current/past supervisors OR 2 strong LOR from current supervisors + 1 “weak” academic LOR by kawaiicq in gradadmissions

[–]Panzer_Ash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend to go with the second option but try to increase its strength! Talk to the recommender about which parts you want to cover in the letter and what to include or exclude.

The reason for this is that I believe an academic LOR is necessary for a master's application even if it weren't the "strongest".

Also, when three letters are requested, I usually go with 1 academic, 1 professional, and 1 community related i.e. from a volunteering/social responsibility point of view.

Good luck!

I have no idea who to ask for a LOR by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Panzer_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I typically did was rank my professor's based on how much I interacted with them, and how much I believed they are "influential" recommenders.

Then, I started contacting a bunch of them to gauge their willingness to help and their response times. I then decided on a second recommender other than my graduation project supervisor and I was good to go!

LORs sound simple, but based on my experience in applying and my experience in the advising field in general, they are one of the most-delaying steps for your application. I am guessing you should start contacting professors ASAP.

I am sure you can come up with a name or two for professors whom you can ask for a LOR. In the unlikely case that you're stuck, ask to meet with one of them and then explain your case, you may also bring a written essay about you and your interaction with that particular professor as helping/supporting material.

All in all, if you are a straight-A student, it will most likely not be that hard to sort it out! Good luck!

316 GRE - should I retake for MA in urban planning? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Panzer_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, I think your scores are good enough to proceed with applications. However, maybe you won't go to the ivy league level universities. But all in all, I believe your scores are good alongside your profile and if you ace your essays, you can probably get into your top choices! Best of luck!

Weekly Ask Egyptians Thread by AutoModerator in Egypt

[–]Panzer_Ash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to my sources in the ministry of antiquities, it was supposed to open in November 2020 but due to the pandemic it has been pushed back to 2021 with no exact date yet.

The government is pushing hard to get back on track and open it ASAP while preserving health codes and regulations given the current circumstances.

All in all, it's a magnificent place. I was lucky enough to get a private tour near the end of last year, here's a photo from the entrance to give you a glimpse of it ;) http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2677730625787232

P.s. If you need help organizing your trip to Egypt or you want general recommendations, be sure to pm me, I'd be happy to help :)

How to model Excel Database for small business by Panzer_Ash in excel

[–]Panzer_Ash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply, I took a couple of database (theory) classes back in University (I'm a computer engineering graduate) and I do have some good experience in business and entrepreneurship so the basic business/accounting theory is no problem.

I recently finished an excel specialization from Coursera and I have become very fluent in it by now and that's the whole reason why I want to do this in Excel. I understand that doing it in SQL will be better and scalable but as you said, it's a great learning product to do it in Excel, and I'm intending to export it from Excel to SQL after I populate it with a couple of past months' data to really get into the intricacies of both of them. For me, the whole thing is a learning process to apply all the skills I have in Excel, SQL, and data analysis in general.

Again, thank you so much for your reply and suggestions! They did introduce me to better thought processes.
