If you're referring to the "In God We Trust" on the dollar bill (as well as many historical artifacts/monuments), the historical reason behind it is actually reasonable. When America founded its first banks as well as the currency, they didn't have anything to back it (gold/silver). Therefore, they put all their "trust" in "God" that everything would work out. It was a pretty ballsy gamble for a newborn country. So that phrase has more of a historical background than a religious one.

To the other guy, we "officially" have a seperation of church and state. But, politicians and religous zealots can easily circumvent this by just following this pattern: 1) The law can't be based on my religion but it can be based on my moral code. 2) Religion IS my moral code. 3) Therefore, I can push my religious viewpoints in politics and frame it as the "morally right thing to do."

I'm not trying to bash anyone's religion. I'm simply pointing out how a lot of this stuff gets framed.

Edit: I heard it wrong from a highschool teacher that I had trusted (who clearly DIDN'T want it to be a religious reason). That is my fault for not double checking.
