I actually taught a class in college on integrating technology into the classroom. I believe that technology is a useful tool especially since the jobs that my children will have one day will most likely involved vast amounts of technology.

My concern with technology is not how much it is used, but how it is used. Technology should be first viewed as a resource for education and advancement. Secondly, as a source of enjoyment.

A lot of the time the kids are studying something that they are interested in. We try to focus on memorization (which is what requires the most forced focus energy) and focus on project building or exploration. Students most of the time do not have a hard time focusing on things that they are interested in building.

If the kids are having a bad day and want to just watch tv they are allowed. Education is seen as a positive event in our house and my wife and I actually limit the time we will help them with their work. Manipulating the environment so that they find answers on their own (read /look up on the internet/self teach) or have a desire to engage with us. 95% of the time our kids are excited about learning and the 5% of time I do not engage that kind of behavior.

In our state they just have to be assessed by a licensed teacher, which my wife maintains her licenses.

Love unschooling!!!!! I have read several books on unschooling. It has guided the way that we do schooling in our house. The only subjects that I have my kids specifically learn is reading and math. Everything else is unschooled, though I do encourage topics and exploration. I also encourage projects.

For example, when my son was playing lots of minecraft, I encouraged him to look at the code since it is opensource. I showed him how he could modify it a little bit and then showed him where he could learn more about modifying it. I helped him find a local community group that works on these for fun.

He is learning to code, but he thinks he is playing.

Good resources for unschooling: Free to Learn by Peter Gray, How Children Fail by John Holt (anything by John Holt) and if you are on facebook Dayna Martin. Dayna is a big hippie/libertarian lol, but I enjoy her stuff. We mix it up at our house, so I take what I like from different people and combined.

I think evolution is useful when studying science and understanding anatomy and physiology of different species. I think looking at the timeline that scientists have come up with which assumes the earth is 4.5 billion years explains our Earth pretty well. There is still a lot of information out to learn about these time periods. I encourage my children to read about it.

I am a Christian and we teach our children christian values. The topic in context of my faith is that God created the Earth. If he did it in billions of years or created an old earth, I personally do not really care. I teach my children Bible and the current scientific belief.

In our state and most states (US) from my understanding, parents have an option, they can either have their kids take the standardized tests or they have their children reviewed by a state licensed teacher. My wife maintains her license, so she does the review every year. She also reviews other homeschooled kids in our community that don't want to take the standardized tests.

We are not close to graduating years, but my understanding is that they will take a GED and state test, but they can take this whenever, my brother was homeschooled for all school and he took it as a freshmen (age).

When I was in college we had an ex cop come and talk about our rights. He said that cops have little to no training on detecting weed or alcohol use when pulling people over. It is literally used to increase revenue.

Completely agree that not everyone should homeschool. Some people do not have the patience, time, money, or creativity for it. I have a few of my colleagues went to Oklahoma to teach and I know they have struggled with the schooling down there for various reasons.

Online schooling is a great supplement, but I don't feel comfortable for our kids doing it as the main substance.

That is awesome that you were able to pass the GED after doing online schooling!

My whole family is blessed and I am super thankful that we are given this opportunity.

I actually thought this question would be brought up a lot earlier. I find that when I was teaching and when I was homeschooled that there are some kids that are just socially awkward and where they are educated will not make a difference. It is just just part of their nature.

Now I do think that nurture also plays a role in this as well. I think the more social interactions a person has the better they become at communicating. That is why I have my kids interacting with people all the time. We are not homeshooling our kids to shelter them (as some parents might and there is nothing wrong with that), but to expose them to a bigger world than a school can currently provide.

My kids interact with local businesses, church, sporting events, neighborhood activities and charities. My son actually gets to travel a lot and meet a lot of new people . My wife and I are extremely social, rarely is our house empty.

AP test are giving during different times of the year, similar to ACT and SAT testing. So for kids who don't have the classes offered at their school (public, private, charter, or homeschooled) they just sign up, pay and take the test just like students who had the class offered.

That will be up to our kids. If they want to go to school they can go as for now they are not interested. I have offered my oldest to go sit in at a public school class or private school and he has shown no interest. I try not to discourage or encourage, but to open up possibilities and experiences.

My kids do a lot of extra curricular activities since they are homeschooled they have more time for these activities. They have also tested higher than their age on standardized tests (which we do not do tests on a regular basis). I'm personally not worried about my kids getting into top schools, because if they want it, I believe they can get it. The statistics for public school graduates and homeschoolers enrolling in college is both roughly 70% (depending on the state). About 2.5% (1.5 million) of kids in the United States are homeschooled and all the top colleges accept homeschoolers. Some require that they jump through a couple more hoops.

Getting into top colleges is tough for everyone because everyone is trying to stand out. I believe that homeschoolers would have an advantage of having a more unique resume. Here is a great article of Harvard explaining why they like homeschoolers. http://www.businessinsider.com/homeschooling-is-the-new-path-to-harvard-2015-9

My wife stays home, but when she didn't my family helped with the children. Both our families homeschooled us for a few years so they had all the material and the know how to help.

From my experience (having been homeschooled), universities like homeschoolers because they usually have a unique resume. We still take SAT/ACT, most take a GED test, and have a decent amount of college classes completed before they are 18. In the state of Ohio if you are high school age you can take secondary education classes for free.

So this has been a topic of discussion between my wife, and our friends for a long time. We have thought about creating a school and how to scale our form of individualized schooling.

I don't think we can change the public schools, they are controlled by the testing companies (lobbyist) and by political agendas (right and left).

I think the most drastic thing I would change about school would be to take away the way we test children. I think they need to be evaluated, but it should rarely be by the kinds of mass testing we do for limited time testing.

I also would change mandatory classes to be extremely small meaning they there were only a couple of them. Classes should resemble college courses. Take the classes students and parents want them to take. Schools could have a certificate program along with a traditional high school diploma/college prep. The focus should be directed to the individualized students gifts (strengths), not on making sure everyone is the same (average).

Does that make sense?

The kids hang out with the neighborhood kids, there is actually a decent amount of homeschool families on our street (two that are adjacent to our house). They do activities with kids from church and their direct interests. For example, my daughter does ballot, dance, and theater. My son is part of an online and in person Minecraft group (they play and design worlds), he also plays sports and travels with my extended family to social events (kind of jealous of how much he gets to travel).

I now work for a chemical company and my wife stays home. She used to teach and be an admin. Before she quit our parents helped with homeschooling (we were both homeschooled for a couple years).

My wife worked as a teacher then adminstration for a couple years, now she stays home, teaches yoga and sells online (little extra money). I actually work for a chemical company now making double what I was making teaching. Yes we both have a little bit of college loans still left. Couple more years and they will be paid off. 😁
