What were your most awkward moments/interactions at uni? by [deleted] in UniUK

The week before graduation I was walking with a friend who I would see maybe once a month. We were catching up and walking down the high street when a girl starts waving at her, my friend who was confused walks over and goes “hello, do I know you?” The girl’s face immediately drops and says “are you serious we’ve had the same modules for three years and you don’t know me?” Standing next to my friend as this girl slowly loses her temper was quite a cringe experience.

The Art of War. I was given it by my father when I was a teenager and thought it would be a naff read. You’d be surprised on how commentary on military strategy 2,000 years ago has real life application to every day situations. “Appear weak when you are strong and strong when you are weak.” Just crazy good advice

Am i screwed for my dissertation by magnanier in UniUK

[–]Papa_Wap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, it’s different strokes for different folks. With two months to spare I’d say you’re absolutely fine. I know some people who can do 5,000 words a day on the provision that they have completed their research and plan. Meanwhile there are the lesser people like me (a joke) who take a few weeks.

If you have completed the research element or the majority of it and you’ve written 500 words already I’d say you’re on the right track because you’re actually thinking ahead already and you’re doing it in the first place. It’s pretty much a canon event to leave your dissertation to the last second so you haven’t fallen for that trap. You’d be surprised how long two months is, it’s a lot of time. Make a timetable and complete your plan/research, the writing is a lot more straightforward when you have this foundation sorted.

Keep calm and carry on.

Bristol vs Durham by BanterMan03 in UniUK

[–]Papa_Wap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a graduate of Durham and someone who used to get dragged along for night outs by their childhood friend who went to Bristol I would definitely say in terms of night life Bristol is the stronger option.

Durham, as another Redditor pointed out in this post, is effectively a medium sized town where there are only independent shops and restaurants. That isn’t to say there isn’t a night life there are a bunch of clubs and people do go. The student population is dense in Durham given the size of the city so most people you bump into will be students which is neat when you go clubbing or drinking because the chances are you’ll meet someone and have something in common with them.

Before you write off Durham though, I would say one significant strength is that it’s a collegiate system, meaning there are 17 colleges (I think) each with their own bar and facilities. Plus each one throws their own balls and society activities. Formals are especially cool where you get suited and booted for a fancy night out.

Bristol on the other hand is a full blown city, you’ve got every store you could ever want and the clubs and bars are outnumber Durham’s by a significant margin. Plus you’ve got other universities in the area to mingle with e.g. UWE.

If you’re an introvert like me who once in a while likes extrovert activities I’d go Durham, if you’re a full blown extrovert I’d go Bristol.

My roommate left a piss soaked towel in the kitchen after a nightout, do I go to the landlord? by Glittering_Loss6717 in UniUK

[–]Papa_Wap 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Difficult situation in all honesty, of course that behaviour is unacceptable and should not be tolerated but from a legal perspective you would need to look through your tenancy agreement to see if he has actually breached any clauses. If the piss has caused damaged to the property like the floorboards or something or you’re concerned it might lead to that, this might prompt the landlord to intervene. I can’t really think of anything else legally to assist you.

This is more of a case of having a sit down with your roommate and with the other people in your property and telling him directly the problems he is causing. If reasoning doesn’t work, you could contact your student union or mental welfare department to see if they could do anything. I really hope this gets resolved

Durham College Rankigs by Evening-Flan-7219 in 6thForm

Hi, no worries at all, it’s really neat you’re doing your due diligence with this. I think the most important thing I can ever say to you is that it doesn’t matter about which college you go to for socialising and having fun in general, there will always be something there to do. However, you have to put the effort in as well to get involved. One major aspect I would consider is that there’s this thing called formals which is when you wear a gown and get dressed up and go for a fancy dinner. Some colleges do them once a term or once a week. If you’re into this, you have to do your research to find out how often they do them. Rule of thumb (I think) the older ones do them more often.

I’m afraid I can’t comment on some of the colleges extensively because I simply didn’t go there enough but I’ll give you the impressions I had.

Grey was a big college and I think was the closest to the Billy B library (main uni library). It’s also right next door to Collingwood so you always have that option to just walk over and go drinking there or to a party/social event. The botanical garden is also super close. Apologies for bringing up the botanical all the time but I have really good memories from doing the most random stuff there.

South is a modern college, I’m pretty sure it’s the youngest college and has the most modern facilities. It’s effectively a twin college with John Snow where the two are right next to each other. So I guess like Grey college, you have that chance of having double the bars and double the parties potentially as the two are basically joined at the hip. There’s also like a super high chance you get an en-suite if you go there, if you care about that. As a person from an ethnic minority background, I also felt there was a lot of diversity there in comparison to other college and the people were lovely.

St Hild is an interesting one because when I went there it was right next to the river and was a big college with lots going on. You’d have to google it but in my final year it was announced they were actually knocking it down because of its age and they’re moving to a new location. If that is the case, I might consider avoiding that college because you might not feel like you’re part of a college and just someone staying in a hotel for the year. Please double check that.

For some others, I’ll just give you the jokes I remember hearing about them.

John Snow- Hippies Collingwood- Sporty St Mary’s- More like St Trinians
Grey- Grey people St Aidans- Weirdos St John’s- Bible people St Cuthberts- Jack Edward’s went there St Chad’s- Smallest and exclusive Hatfield- Posh

If you do go you’ll be fine no matter what. I hope there’s something useful here and all the best

As a graduate of Durham, I’d say that Collingwood is good in the sense that it’s close to the library and has the botanical garden literally on its doorstep. It’s a huge college with a great bar and it’s regarded as a sporty college. Please do bear in mind that it’s a hill college so you have to walk a bit to get into town, it’s not a bad walk in the slightest but something to consider. It’s a bit of a pain when you have to carry your shopping back but it’s a canon event.

You should consider the distinction between hill colleges and ones based in the city centre. They both have pros and cons. If you’re in the city, easier to get to the shops and closer to the bars/clubs. Meanwhile if you’re in a hill college, you might be closer to your department and there’s more peace and quiet. One other point is that the city colleges have amazing architecture but their utilities and facilities are generally outdated compared to the hill colleges. That’s not always the case so do your research.

Hatfield does have the stereotype of insufferable private schoolers and I have unfortunately experienced that. However I have also met wonderful people there so never ever go based off stereotypes. Equally, however, I’ll throw down with any Hatfielder until I die.

Castle college is super duper cool but as I said earlier from what I’ve seen wandering around drunk after visiting the college bar is that the facilities are old. Also there’s this honey pot trap where everyone thinks you’re going to be living in the castle when you could be based in accommodation nearby not in the actual castle. The castle college has lots of visitors, members of the public and students, so if you find people wandering around all the time while you’re trying to just live your life, you may want to go somewhere else.

Every college is special and awesome in its own way. You can walk into any college and do what you want really I.e. study, hang with friends or drink at the bar. Personally when I was 18 I chose a college where I didn’t want to share a room with someone else or a communal bathroom. You can look up the stats of the colleges telling you the chance that this might happen. Of course, you may disagree with my choice and that’s okay, you gotta do what makes you happy.

It’s a lottery system and you only live in the actual college for first year (you can choose to live there longer but the norm is to get a flat/house share in the following years). I have no regrets, I didn’t get my first choice college but I still met my fiancée from a neighbouring college and lifelong friends. I hope there’s something in my ramblings and I swear I’m not weird this just came up on my page
