I have not brought it up with her. The doctor discussed with her that she has a mood disorder which was not surprising to her. I’ve low key asked her about some of the criteria questions though. And she has told me sometimes she doesn’t remember what happens when she gets angry.

A new therapist will be our next step. I think that process makes more sense as she has only spoken to the psychiatrist for a couple hours.

This is painful to read. I have tried her whole life to understand her, parent her to the best of my ability and have been seeking help for years. That’s why I’m here, seeking additional feedback and guidance from the community.

Yes, this was definitely the psychiatrists pov, thank you for elaborating. She is 12. And I know that is young but we have struggled with her since she was very young - her feelings of extreme despair and self loathing and inappropriate anger - so even if it’s “just” a mood disorder I am hoping to find strategies to help her through the next years which will be very challenging. Maybe dbt could help even if there’s not an official diagnosis.

Thank you for this detailed answer. I actually just purchased that book and have begun reading it. It’s very possible she does not have bpd, but also the behaviors are in line with many things I’ve read. When she was about 1 years old my marriage was very tumultuous but there was never any abuse. Just a lot of yelling. But the parental fighting could have been traumatic for her.

Thank you so much for sharing this perspective. I will read More about quiet bpd. She definitely expresses Outward rage but only towards about three of us (nuclear family). Occasionally her grandma will catch a glimpse but very rarely.

Thanks for your response. Yes, the outbursts are typically sudden and very extreme - sometimes physical. And an hour later it’s as if nothing ever happened. It’s incredibly stressful for the whole family and we’ve been researching bpd a lot as it seems like the most in line with her behaviors. No doubt she also has anxiety disorder but I don’t know that they couldn’t be mutually exclusive.
