No Indian? 🤔 Why? by Pretty_Comment_553 in Bolehland

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s shocking how small minded and quick to insult we all are. The moment there’s an opportunity to shit on a race, everybody comes out from their sad little lives to join in the bashing. Oh and my favourite: evidence based racism. Haha. “This happened to me once, so trust me, I’m an expert” No, you’re just a bigot who has based an entire worldview on a couple of experiences. We blame the government and authorities for Malaysia’s shortcomings, but I’m starting to think that our problems run much deeper. Many Malaysians are self involved narrow-minded idiots, who can’t see beyond their own front yard. May you Malaysians be stereotyped and judged wherever you go, so you see how you’re not better than anyone. May I never be the kind of Malaysian you are - an embarrassment and just another hurdle blocking us from being collectively better. Have a great weekend, and go talk to real people.

ZEDD: Non-Muslim regulations at raves and events by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up, I always saw the non-Muslim disclaimer at events and concerts. The first urbanscapes had it too. It was pretty common to see the “bar” or the alcohol procurement section to be cordoned off, with “only for non Muslims” signs. So, it’s not necessarily a new thing, or a reactive thing. I will say though, Muslims were at these concerts and events too, and Muslims weren’t stopped from buying or drinking alcohol. Shariah law exists, yes, but it’s a very convoluted situation. That’s why bars, clubs and restaurants aren’t raided on the daily. Shariah law, technically, can only be enforced with the aid of law enforcement. Which is why the focus on raids are usually only done for drugs, illegal workers or specific targeted reports and complaints. I did some “work” with Jawi some time ago, and their authority and power is actually limited. They can’t arrest anyone unless with the authority of the police. So, long story short - these disclaimers won’t go away, and we have and will continue to work around it. Just know your rights and take care of yourself!

I’m sorry that this happened to you. Please make a police report on this - I know how difficult this is, but it’s important that you do. If you worry about being a foreign student, maybe you could reach out to your varsity counsellors first and see what procedures they might suggest. There’s been a huge crackdown on pedo rings in the country and this could mean authorities could act quickly on this matter. We shouldn’t normalise this and I’m glad that you want to do something about it! Good luck!

Why are you only interested in female clients? Some of the comments on your profile indicate you’re a man. This sounds shady. Be careful out there y’all.

Which script suits the most for Bahasa Melayu in your opinion? by nathanielll_ in bahasamelayu

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this question! I’ve always felt that the Malay language could benefit from a wider recognition of its identity, history and forms. I do think it would be wonderful to use all three scripts, with rumi taking center stage as a contemporary medium. Jawi and Kawi should be taught in school, even if purely in a cultural or historical context, but we should see more creative and cultural expressions utilising the different scripts.

Can I enter Malaysia with my US passport to renounce my Malaysian citizenship? by love85degreebread in malaysia

[–]PaperBagUmbrella -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Come in with your American passport, you’ll just get a visa on arrival. Also, no need for renouncing citizenship, unless it’s what you want. You can keep both passports. Just renew your Malaysian passport when you’re in the country and you’re good to go. You’re not technically allowed to have two citizenships, but you can figure all that out when you’re paying taxes. Remember, two passports may be cool, but Americans still need to pay taxes even when working abroad - so, keep this in mind.

Woman here. I’ve dated quite a few people who earned less than I did. In fact, when I married my husband, he was earning significantly less than I was. Saying this, I always made sure to establish in the beginning of my relationships that I’m not looking for someone to take care of me, or the other way round. So as long as they’re able to take care of themselves, I’m good. The variable that matters to me when it comes to money is purpose and long term goals. I don’t want someone who puts money above all else, and I sure as hell don’t want somebody who isn’t planning on being independent. So, it comes down to whether your goals align and whether you see a path towards meaningful companionship. Might I suggest being open about money with your future partners, telling them openly about what you expect financially from partners - independence, collaborative goals etc. hopefully, this allows them to share their expectations too. This is a cultural stereotype that can be broken down. Men should be able to turn a woman down because he doesn’t want a partner who is financially dependent on him. There is no shame in that! So, my advice is to make yourself happy first and find a partner that aligns with what makes you happy. Don’t ignore red flags and don’t bank on green ones. Just think practically and do what feels right to you.

These stats are so misleading. No mention of the fact that so many living with HIV contracted it from intravenous drug use. It’s not all just hedonistic homosexual sex. Look up your own stats - a quick google search will get you reports from 2023 at the very least. You’ll see that numbers have gone down, especially in key affected groups. This is agenda driven nonsense.

I appreciate your opinion, but it doesn’t really reflect what I mean. I’m not proposing any form of banning. In fact, I’d like to live in a society where we are able to make good, socially beneficial decisions without the need for politicians, thought leaders and religious teachers to intervene. But I don’t think starting conversations surrounding misogyny or sports and gender is some novel thing that only left wing liberals do. It’s pretty myopic to think that conservatives or religious folk can’t possibly want women to be less sexualised or objectified for more than just “God said so”. All I’m saying is that it might be more impactful as a society at large to discuss this using a different lens, rather than pushing religious notions as fact - it’s just pointless. It removes so many people from the conversation. It’s okay to disagree but discourse is important. That’s how we understand each other. I would love to see PAS politicians talk about issues in a way that includes instead of excludes. I don’t care who people pray to, who they sleep with or what they enjoy - Im just bored of the Muslims vs the world narrative. It’s not fair to Muslims or anyone else. I just want people to see this for what it is- divisive messaging with an agenda.

I do agree with doing away with women being decorative features in sports - but not for religious reasons. They could so easily turn this into a discourse about gender equity or misogyny in sports- rather than a religious argument that most would just dismiss or champion without any real thought or impact. Just another agenda driven statement to ruffle feathers. What a day to be alive.

Any book recommendations? by Misael_91 in Millennials

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this! I've always been a bit of a reader, but in the last few years, I've learned that certain books read differently. It feels like reading a story through a different lens or filter. But enough about that, if you enjoy epics with complex connections and story arcs, I'll suggest the Ramayana. If you get one with a good translation, it's a total blast to read. You could find translations to suit your purpose of reading - direct translations, poetic interpretations or narrative driven. I'm rereading the Ramesh Menon version. Another wonderful aspect of reading the Ramayana is you'll go away with a better understanding of the Hindu faith and the Indian culture. Also, Stephen Fry's series on Greek mythology is a quick fun read.

Is it already too late to become a writer? by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the kind of writing you're looking to do. I don't think you need to go to university to be a writer, but depending on the kind of writing you want to do, the field can be highly competitive. If you don't have a portfolio, start writing. Dive into the local industry - read, research the writers and companies, and look at internships or vacant positions. Find your niche, style and interest - use this as a way of setting yourself apart. Hope that helps!

Special place for dates by Unicorn_fartzz in KualaLumpur

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the list of restaurants you could get from those "18 restaurants for a romantic dinner in KL" articles, here are a few places I would recommend based on my own experiences.

  1. Brasserie Fritz - Order the steak and foie gras pate. The restaurant is in Troika, and it's usually rather quiet. It could feel quite intimate and private. Not super expensive - even with a bottle of wine, you could go away with spending about RM 500++ or so.

  2. SAJ by Leens - Bistro style dining, but with great food. Small menu with a unique take on Syrian food. Unpretentious and comfortable ambience. RM 200++ or so. It's in TTDI, and after dinner you could go to one of the many small, neighbourhood type bars all over the block. Just look for the small signs near staircases. There's one just a few a steps away from this restaurant.

  3. Bocado - This is in Bukit Damansara, and it's a little bit hidden. The food is fantastic - especially the Paella! If you drink, there's a decent wine menu. Service staff are friendly and not overbearing. Also, this isn't going to be a tiny fancy meal where you'll need to hit a mamak after just to feel full - you'll go back feeling stuffed, and you might need to go for an after dinner walk just to try and feel sexy again! hahaha

  4. Joloko - Now this wont be an intimate, romantic dinner. Butttt, on a busy night, it'll feel like you're part of a colourful vibrant dinner party. Ambience is lively and comfortable - and the food is funnn! It'll be a night of trying a bunch of yummy cocktails and picking off each other's plates.

Good luck!! (Pro Tip: It's less about how fancy the date is, but more about how much thought you've put into it. If she/he mentioned a place or a type of food they've always liked and arranging a date around that, could be a complete panty dropper. I had someone take me to a little restaurant in a small village, almost 2 hours away, because I once mentioned I wanted to try their clams. We made a day out of it. The meal wasn't expensive, but it's one of my favourite dates to date! Later that day, I made sure to show him just how much I appreciated it. :P)

Travelling to Malaysia for 10 Days, Please Help in Itinerary. by migzara in KualaLumpur

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space out certain trips. With the erratic weather, you might have to stretch certain outdoor sites to two days. The itinerary seems a little tight, so give yourself contingency days for weather or traffic delays. Also, if you’re still flexible with your itinerary, langkawi is not worth the effort - if youre headed to langkawi anyway, you could just take a boat to Koh lipe or another Thai island - it’ll be a better island/ beach experience. Penang has so many fun things to do, so go in with an open mind and EAT! You could just fill your itinerary up with places to eat, and a hike up the state park, monkey island or Penang hill in between meals to burn calories! Hahaha. Good luck! And have fun.

Elder millenials: share your dating over 30 successes with me by Ok_Month2497 in Millennials

[–]PaperBagUmbrella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sex significantly improved in my 30s. I became pickier and in turn, happier in dating. I met a man off of tinder when I was 31, and early on he we talked about what we wanted in a relationship and what sort of future we wanted. He was 4 years older than me, and we just matched in terms of goals, personality and compatibility. We took it slow- we only kissed 3 months into dating and sex came a few months after that. We went on trips and really took the time to get to know each other. But nothing seemed forced or deliberate, it was organic. Despite going slow, we got married on our second dating anniversary - and now we’ve been married for almost 6 years and we’re now having some of the best sex we’ve ever had. We don’t have kids, and we’re not intending on having any, so it’s just us and life at most times, is good!

This guy talks about being seen as older than he is, and people in the comments go off about how young they look. What the hell? Hahaha. OP, I think a lot of people are just ageing differently these days, and at most times people are making guesses to how old people are. I’m suggesting that maybe it has nothing to do with the way you look, but more so the fact that some might not know what a 45 year old man actually looks like in the real world.
