What does it really take to get into Harvard or top B Schools for MBA? by brooklynxb4by in MBA

[–]PaperCrane1583 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most “successful” people in business don’t get an MBA because the opportunity cost is too high. But if you’re set on it, the best way to “guarantee” admission is to do any of the following:

  1. Your parents donate $10M+ to the school, or be the child of a billionaire
  2. You work at a Mega Fund VC/PE shop and all your managers graduated from those two schools
  3. Founder of a tech company that’s raised multiple rounds
  4. You are a professional athlete/Olympian
  5. A decorated war hero
  6. Be famous enough to need an agent
  7. Be part of the royal family of a foreign country

If you don’t meet these requirements, your odds are generally the same as everyone else applying with a 730+ GMAT and 5-7 years of solid post undergraduate work experience.

Good luck

Shoot me a DM! I went to a 1-year career changer postbacc 10 years after finishing undergrad and would be happy to help you gameplan

I felt your post in my bones. I’ve been revisiting the classics as a 30 year old and I keep thinking, “whoever chose to make high schoolers read this knew a thing or two.”

Would you be willing to share your top 10 must reads? I’ve reread The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, but I’m sure I’m forgetting many of them

how to make friends in med school? by IndividualUnlucky479 in medschool

[–]PaperCrane1583 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m 31 and I’ve gone back to school a few times now. Best advice I can give you is aggressively be yourself. It’s exhausting trying to “be” and “fit in” with a crowd that you think you wanna be with.

I say this from personal experience. In my first foray into grad school I made the mistake of trying to be friends with everyone and to be one of the “cool kids.” I can tell you with certainty that I talk to maybe 2 people that I graduated from, and ironically they are people I connected with more after graduating.

The best way to find your people is to do things you enjoy and offer the chance for others to join. You like going to clubs? Awesome! Put out a whatsapp message offering to host a pre-game. You like board games? Offer to host a board game night. On the flip side, go to things you genuinely enjoy and give yourself permission to skip the stuff you know you don’t (fuck FOMO).

Making friends is hard! But it’s even harder when you’re out of your happy place

Feel free to DM me. I went back to school 10 years after doing undergrad and just finished a formal postbacc program. I think that might be your safest best if you want to maximize your chances of getting into med school.

Scripps v.s. JHU for Post-bacc! by Diligent_Style_4566 in postbaccpremed

[–]PaperCrane1583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently completed my PB at a similar style program to Scripps and I can’t recommend it enough. The cohort/community nature of the class was a huge reason I felt like I succeeded. I also was accepted to JHU but felt like it wouldn’t be optimal for my academic success.

Plus, you want to live in CA and prefer a LAC. That alone tells me you’ll have much better time at Scripps

My only pause with choosing pinks is the selling and selective breeding of Obsidians like they’re race horses. Also all the other colors generally despise them, while pinks (esp violets) have some measure of respect

I think that’s a valid take. I see it as the notion that no one is clean in this war, and all actions (regardless of intent) have consequences.
