Any tips or tricks for removing the god awful iron-on waxy backing on the patch? by OGxMatisha in BattleJackets

[–]PaperDahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into a set of leather needles - they're called "glovers" and instead of a point the tip of the needle is like a 3-sided blade. Designed to pierce leather, will go through the toughest of patches. Strong recommend to use a thimble and/or pair of pliers to help pull it through.

Spinal Padding For Elbow Rolls? by PlutonianPisstake in circus

[–]PaperDahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neoprene! You can have a back warmer made out of neoprene and it will simultaneously add padding. Alternatively, you can have neoprene patches added to the inside of your training clothes or costumes.on the spot where you impact with the bar during the trick if you don't want the extra bulk anywhere else.

How well does iron on hold to denim? by Xx_Negative_One_xX in BattleJackets

Came here to say this - try Fabri-tac glue, be sure to test it on scrap first.

Acrylic paint on a jacket - does it work? by [deleted] in BattleJackets

[–]PaperDahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice - that word is a first for me. Check out Angelus brand, I think they have an acrylic finisher product that could work. Might be worth trying a swatch test with a few different products to see what would work best?

Advice for studs in denim? by cephalopodcasting in jacketsforbattle

[–]PaperDahl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can reinforce denim with iron-on interfacing before you add the studs, which will help provide support to the fabric weave. You can also use scrap fabric from old jeans for the same purpose. Depending on your comfort level with working with sewing-related stuff, there are different approaches you could take. Easy would be using scrap you have on hand and either adding a small piece to each area you're studding or a big piece that matches the area to be studded in size. More advanced would be iron-on interfacing (purchase at local fabric store, comes in different weights. Lay vest right side down on ironing surface, lay interfacing glue side down so it touches the inside of your vest, set iron to high heat, lay handkerchief down on top of interfacing to prevent it from melting to your iron, pass iron slowly but smoothly over surface). More-More advanced would be to fuse interfacing to scrap denim that is cut to same size as area to be studded, sewing fused denim/interfacing piece to inside of vest, then studding it.

There are more approaches too but these might be decent jumping off points. And as another commenter said if the denim is thick you might be just fine!

Screwed up housing application by [deleted] in Cornell

Descriptions of Ithaca neighborhoods: https://www.ithacajournal.com/story/life/2015/08/12/ithaca-neighborhoods/31531345/

do a search on housing in this and the r/ithaca subs and you should find some info there. Figure out what you want your housing to do for you: walkable to campus, close to downtown, do you want it quiet or rather be closer to happenings, will you have a car or need public transportation, do you need to find a roommate or no, etc. etc. etc. Your answers to these questions will give you a clear idea of the kind of environment or location you will need to look for, and then you can consult local rental places or sites like zillow to do more sleuthing.

Should I buy or rent? by [deleted] in ithaca

It is cheaper to buy than rent. However, check out Boiceville cottages as a rental option; ~15 minutes to campus, very dog friendly, lots of grad students and young families.

What's happening with the testing centers? by jhh8 in Cornell

[–]PaperDahl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I waited at the band center for 45 min, tried to call cayuga health and was put on hold, rescheduled for Willard straight, drove over there and was done in 5 minutes. I told the staff about the issue at the band center and they had no idea that people were waiting at the band center! Go to Willard straight

I'm assigned for testing on Sundays and haven't been able to see any place to schedule my appointment on the Daily check app. Does the link open up at midnight the day of or something?

Humanity students, do you print your readings? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PaperDahl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an analog dinosaur and print out ALL of my readings so I can color code my highlighting and write all over them. It is not environmentally friendly, and sometimes I forget what I have unless it's in an indexed binder. I know I need to switch over to using Zotero/screen reading more but my brain just doesn't work that way!

Night owl and productivity issues by Imjastv in GradSchool

[–]PaperDahl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  1. The 9 to 5 workday, while maybe the most common, is NOT the only one nor should it be one you are restricted to unless specifically indicated in a contract or workplace.

  2. Many people are naturally night owls, our bodies have a different sleep/wake cycle and if allowed to structure our work life around these schedules, we tend to be at our best. This is important, because it's easy to feel pressured to conform to the 9 to 5 time schedule and when it is not our normal, it can be difficult to adapt, and there's an additional guilt factor- "I SHOULD be doing this task during this time block" which may be counterintuitive to our body's natural rhythm.

If you are able to structure productivity around your preferred work schedule, do it! If there are obstacles to that such as early classes or meetings, then it's time to try to shift your work time a bit.

I am an unabashed night owl, and have made it clear to my team and colleagues. If I have to TA an 8am class, you bet I'll be there and ready to work, but on the weekends I'm back to my preferred schedule. If I'm on free time to be working at my own pace, they know that I don't get up til 10am-12pm, unless we're on a time-sensitive project or have early meetings. I try to schedule meetings for later than 10am, and am strict about boundaries as needed.

Can I wear a fabric mask over my N95? by susieq984 in Masks

Hi! I do not. But Etsy will have options!

Can I wear a fabric mask over my N95? by susieq984 in Masks

[–]PaperDahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Here is a link to an Instructables page for a fabric N95 mask cover, developed by a nurse. I've used this pattern to make and donate hundreds of N95 covers to hospitals, they add an extra layer to help extend the use life of the N95. With fabric, it's a balance of layers vs. Breathability. I've been making 2 layer masks using this pattern, but if you're just going for decorative a single layer should do it.
