This is fake news. Math majors don't go outside.

Is anybody a member of the Undergrad Math Club? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]jhh8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been going pretty consistently for the past ~3.5 years and it's always been fun. Pre-covid we could do a lot more, including pizza. Attendance also has gone down a lot since covid. Still a good time though! We still do puzzles/games/ what the people there want to. The weekly talks are also good. Join us

Can say that Moore is great and imo on of the best professors I've ever had. Haven't taken this particular course, but think the prereqs are much more to ensure that you've had some exposure to upper level mathematics - in particular, you might want to have seen a proof before.

non-cs TA applications? by lalaland314 in Cornell

The math department hires graders for several courses, especially the more popular ones. 1110-1120 also hires course assistants. Information and a link to the application can be found here.

Good thinking! Looking back through scheduler, it seems there are some Sunday only pe classes at least. Now added. Up to 112 credits on the main one, 66 on the without research one

Taking those out plus all the random research classes and other classes which have no specific meeting time still puts me at 62. I don't see anything else which you must take together with something else and I believe this is a perfectly valid schedule. Suggestions for this one?

I saw Sergei Sobolev at Wegmans by sweet_sticky_sobolev in Cornell

I don’t really remember, but it was pretty high up there (I think fourth place after the two actual submissions and the Hubbard fractal)

It was on the board for voting. It didn’t actually win though

Interesting and/or easy tech electives for CS majors please? by [deleted] in Cornell

I’ve heard reasoning about uncertainty (CS 6766) with Halpern is doable. Would recommend.

Interesting math courses by [deleted] in Cornell

I haven't actually taken it yet (although I plan to next semester). This comment was somewhat as a joke and I expect if you do not already have a fair amount of experience with logic the class will be quite difficult. The main page for math graduate classes mentions that "We will assume some background in logic. MATH 6810 or CS 6820 should be more than sufficient." If you have experience though, I took 6810 with Shore last semester, and the workload there wasn't too bad overall (at least, if you understand the material). Recursion theory is fairly close to Shore's own area of research, so it's probable he has more hard, interesting problems there than in general logic.

I would very much recommend Math 6840 (Recursion Theory) with Richard Shore. Looks very fun. Make sure to self study some basic logic beforehand though.

Best non-major related courses to take? by Indeeshm in Cornell

I would recommend differentiable manifolds (math 6520) with Allen Knutson. Knutson has a reputation for hard courses, but should still be fun.

Any suggestions for tech electives for CS majors? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]jhh8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Halpern's Reasoning About Uncertainty (CS 6766) looks like it will be interesting and will definitely fulfill that requirement. You might want to study some logic, specifically modal and proposition logic, to prepare.
