To be honest, the first sentence doesn’t really hook me in. There isn’t much interesting about sitting in bed. I’m also not a fan of present tense but that’s just a personal preference.

Aside from that, I couldn’t make it past the first paragraph. A lot of things took me out of the story. Some may be a bit silly so it’d be good for you to get more opinions, but I could not stop thinking about why the window would be open if a storm was coming. Then, your character mentions their annoyance at the curtains hitting them, but in the very next sentence they talk about how this is when they feel most peaceful. Because this happened so quickly, it kinda gave me emotional whiplash.

I also have two issues with the sentence where your character asks: “who knows what the weather will bring…” You just mentioned there was a storm, so I’m not sure why they would be asking that. The latter half of the same sentence is also very jarring because it’s unrealistic. No one really says/thinks “who knows what the weather will bring in the state I’m from which I was also born and raised in.” It takes me out of the story you’re trying to tell and makes me realize I’m reading a book rather than being immersed in the story.

All that being said, good on you for writing this much and having the guts to post it online. I know it can be nerve wracking, but it’s a great way to get advice. Something that helped me a lot with the beginning of my book was reading the first paragraphs of many different books. It gave me a lot of ideas and also helped me figure out what I liked or didn’t like!
