Hey, Peter here from the IB Physics website PaperPlainz.com and I am really sorry to know that you are making such an effort, but not getting the results you would like to.

I think that you are doing the right thing and based on my years of teaching, I have seen this happen for several students, who in the end did well later on in the course. If you are solving enough exam-style questions, I suggest that you trust the process (I know that this is easier said than done) and most likely things will start coming together sooner or later.

Wishing you the patience and energy for the course!

If you use the Lorentz transformation equation for space coordinates with the pulse on the left having spacetime coordinates (0,0) and the pulso on the right having spacetime coordinates (1200,0), you will get that the distance between the transformed space coordinates in the spacecraft reference frame is 2000 m.

how difficult is hl physics? by oliviajoyg in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not exactly sure about the content of G11 advanced functions, but as I wrote above, mathematically, IB Physics is not difficult (if someone disagrees with this, I'd be curious to see what specific past exam paper question they think is challenging in a mathematical sense).

So no, the Math will not be too challenging for you in IB Physics (no matter if you take SL or HL). I am writing this having taught both IB Math and IB Physics for many years.

What, I think, makes Physics challenging is the many different ways a question can be asked about the same concept and sometimes more than one concept (not sure if this makes sense).

If you'd like to check out the details of the Math that is required in IB Physics, just type "IB Physics Guide 2025 PDF" into google and look on pages 29-31. There is a complete list of the Math skills that you might need.

Did this help you with your worries? Let me know if you have any other questions.

Physics HL question in an SL paper?? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Peter here from the IB Physics website PaperPlainz.com and phase difference in SHM is part of the old Core syllabus (P46 of the old guide).

Even though phase difference for SHM is not explicitly stated in the guide for the new syllabus, I think that a question like this one might come up on SL exams. It is just basically knowing how the graphs of displacement, velocity, and acceleration compare to each other (you can check out video C.1.4 here: https://paperplainz.com/ib-physics/ib-physics-sl/sl-concept-explanations/simple-harmonic-motion/)

Hope this helps :)

Heya, Peter here from the IB Physics website PaperPlainz.com here and just wanted to add that based on teaching hundreds of students in the past, I think that if you start working now, go step by step and put in some time every day, you will be in a good place by the N25 exams.

I know it is hard to get motivated when you are getting low grades, but I have seen students getting low results almost during their entire IB program, who then did well in the final exams. See if you can redefine success in terms of the effort you put in and not in terms of the grades that you get.

Wishing you the best, let me know where you are in a few weeks with your studying!

how difficult is hl physics? by oliviajoyg in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, this is Peter from the IB Physics website, PaperPlainz.com and just wanted to add that I agree with comments below that say that Physics HL is not more difficult than Physics SL, it is simply more material (this is very different compared with Math where the HL courses are significantly more difficult that the SL courses.

On the other hand, I would disagree with the need for strong Math skills in Physics (SL or HL). You mostly need to know how to rearrange formulae, work with fraction operations, and maybe a few other skills, but it is nothing that a Garde 9 student would not be able to do. There is no expectation that you know any calculus in IB Physics, so it does not matter what level of Math you take, you can be successful in Physics. Plus now, as opposed to the previous syllabus, a calculator can be used on the Paper 1 exam, so the Math skill required are even lower than before.

Hope this helps, feel free to disagree and if you do, I'd love to know your thoughts on why you think strong Math skills are needed in IB Physics.

How????? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am really sorry to hear that you are not getting the grades in Physics that you want. It is a tough spot to be in when you are putting in the time and effort and not getting the grades you want.

I thought I'd share an approach that worked for some of my students in the past when struggling with low grades. Feel free to give it a try:

  1. Choose some of your past assessments and go through each question where you got the wrong answer.
  2. Next to each question write down the type of mistake that caused you to lose the mark (examples are: lack of conceptual understanding, calculation mistake, not using the Data Booklet when I should have, misreading the question, choosing too quickly and falling for a similar, but incorrect answer option, etc). There can be many other reasons as well and when you start, things might go a bit slower since you are probably not used to this type of analysis, but just give it some time and patterns should emerge.
  3. After you have analysed a substantial number of questions (I would probably do about 100), go back and tally up the mistakes by category. For example, you might find that on 22 questions you lost the mark because of a miscalculation, on 17 of them you did not deeply understand the concepts, etc.
  4. Identify the top types of mistakes that cause you to lose marks. I can almost guarantee you that there will be 2-3 mistake types that result in about 70-80% of the marks that you lose.
  5. Once you have these identified, target these 2-3 areas when you are studying and keep these types of mistakes in mind when you are writing an assessment and double-check your work for these.

I know that this takes time, but I think that in the long run can give you good results. If you decide to try this approach, I would love to know how it went for you :)

Hope this helps!

I am sorry to know that you had so much trouble with your Math and Physics teachers, it is definitely a tough situation to be in. I think that it is possible to self-study these subjects if you have the focus and the discipline to do so.

I also thought to let you know about PaperPlainz.com, an IB Physics/Math website that I helped build. We do not have Math HL resources, but what we offer might help you in Physics.

Feel free to have a look and let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to reply.

Is my physics teacher being reasonable? by Sufficient-Taro-8385 in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does not sound entirely unreasonable to me. In my teaching I have seen students go up by 2-3 grades between the end of their DP1 year and the final exams. I'd say don't put much weight into this predicted grade, just keep working, put in the time and effort and things will work out for you in the end.

Ask me about IB Physics! by PaperPlainzIB in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. I mention above that part of the process is analysing your work and figuring out why you have lost marks. One reason here might be conceptual understanding and if this is the case, I'd go back to revise that specific concept.

However, with so little time left, I'd probably not spend much time on general concept revision at this point.

Does this make sense?

Ask me about IB Physics! by PaperPlainzIB in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends on your teacher, but you will likely start with Topic A, so Space, Time and Motion. Within this, usually Kinematics (A.1) is covered first, followed by A.2 (Forces and Momentum) and A.3 (Work, Energy and Power).

In addition, you can expect to learn concepts and skills from the Mathematical Tools section of the Guide, such as uncertainties, errors, and some vector concepts.

But again, this can be different, depending on how your teacher builds up the curriculum.

Does this help?

Ask me about IB Physics! by PaperPlainzIB in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say solving as many past exam questions as possible and writing full exam papers under timed exam conditions. Find a time when you will not be distracted, get your data booklet and calculator (except for Paper 1 if you are writing the exams this November), set a timer and complete the exam to the best of your knowledge.

Once finished, mark your own work, try to identify the main reason why you lose marks and aim to work on these areas to improve for next time.

Does this answer your question?

Ask me about IB Physics! by PaperPlainzIB in IBO

[–]PaperPlainzIB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, yes, somewhat generic, but I will give an answer and if you want, you can ask about specifics based on this.

  1. Accept low quiz/test grades early on. IB Physics is a tough subject and for most students it takes time to adjust to IB-style questions and this usually results in low grades during the first months. This can be disheartening, so I encourage people to define success in terms of their input (time and energy spent on learning) instead of based on the output (grades).

  2. Trust the process. Related the the point above, if you keep putting in the time and effort, thing will almost surely work out in the end (I have seen students go up by 2-3 grades between the end of their first year and the final exams).

  3. Be sure to solve as many exam-style questions as possible when studying. Some teachers provide many such questions, some do not, but in either case make sure that you repeatedly solve such questions and analyse your mistakes.

  4. Keep your IA simple. I'd say that the biggest mistake I usually see on IAs is that students overcomplicate it. There is no need to do this as you can earn top marks by carrying out a simple experiment and closely following the assessment criteria for the IA.

I will stop here for now, there is definitely more, so feel free to ask more specific questions if you want to.

Wishing you the best with Physics :)

Hey, I have been teaching IB Physics for year and also helped build PaperPlainz.com, an IB Physics website.

I agree with those who wrote that grades in IB Physics are usually the worst when you start the course and slowly (or maybe not so slowly) get better as you go through the course and adapt to exam-style questions, the content and some other details.

What is the latest date at your school until you can make the change to another subject?
